  1. Sadly, my Saturday got blown up today. I was really looking forward to this. I hope those who can go have a great meal.
  2. Ahh...good 'ol tteokbokki. I try it every now and then and I just can't get into it. Maybe I've never had an "authentic" version, but from descriptions I've read, I think I have.
  3. Hmm. Yeah, I signed up too and now I'm wondering if I am confirmed or not.
  4. I've never tried it, but The Swiss Bakery has King Cake on their holiday specialties page.
  5. Ooh...this is tempting. Very tempting. It would be fun to learn a little more on how those chocolates are made.
  6. Actually, I bought some yellow popcorn from their bulk jars last weekend! I just didn't know if there were better ones out there. There are few different ones on Amazon I might try.
  7. Zombie thread reanimate! I just got a Presto Power Pop for Christmas and am looking for good popcorn to try out in the gadget. Any recent popcorn people would recommend trying?
  8. Oh yes, the portion size at CF is waaay too big, bordering on what I call "big a#$ Italian" size (aka Maggiano's, Buca...). And, of course, those skinny dishes' calorie counts don't include the bread. Nothing kills my calorie counting like a basket of bread and some olive oil (I'm look at you, Dean!).
  9. I actually don't mind some CF dishes. Sometimes when I'm on travel, it's the best option of what's around some convention center. And I for one am glad for the new skinny menu. But, I will also say that some of their other dishes are just plain obscene. I checked out the latest "Eat This, Not That" from the library last week and it's amusing how many CF dishes are in the "worst offenders" list. And even their alternatives aren't that low-cal, just not as bad.
  10. I go to Ga Bo Ja every so often, but since I'm solo, I can't quite order one of the many dishes that lurk on the sashimi side of the menu (one is over $200 I think...I've always wondered what you get with that). If you find yourself there, let me know what was good and what wasn't. It'd be nice to surprise the waitresses by ordering differently! That said, when I'm in there and a group comes, I'm always staggered by the sheer number of dishes that appear. Just amazing.
  11. Penzey's has a few flavored salts, I think, and if they are on the website, the stores should have them. They have various sea salts, as well as a few salts that have seasoning mixed-in (4S, seasoned, Sichuan pepper, shallot, etc., search for 'salt'). If you want smoked salts, they don't have any of those that I can see. It's not local at all, but when I want to try interesting salts, I buy them through the Savory Spice Shop which was my Penzey's when I was in Colorado (before Penzey's opened there). They have both spiced-blended salts and varieties of smoked and other salts. Frankly, they seem to have more interesting blends (say onion-free), other spices like long pepper and period as well as some oddities like frankincense and myrrh. ETA: Huh. A search around the 'net has turned up The Spice and Tea Exchange in Georgetown which has various salts. Never been there before though.
  12. Huh. New is right. I went to the Annandale Lighthouse on Friday and they were still using the table standee menus. Guess I'll have to go there again soon to see the new menus.
  13. lperry, I went by MOM's in Merrifield this evening and they had King Soba 100% Buckwheat noodles for $3.99. That seems a pretty good price for 100% buckwheat. (They also had, I think, their pumpkin, ginger, & brown rice noodles as well. But I could be wrong.)
  14. Actually, that $5.75 is a fairly good price for pure buckwheat soba. I know I've seen these Eden Foods 100% Buckwheat Soba before at a price around $6, $7...somewhere. If I find them again, I'll let you know. (Huh, they even have jinenjo soba...haven't seen that since in a long time. Getting hungry...)
  15. Clove! Thank you! I knew it was some sort of spice, but I couldn't place it. Also, my girlfriend liked the cherry bark as well. She's vegan so she can't partake in the ganache bon-bons...more for me!
  16. The one I'm not sure of has orange and green leaves as the pattern. Also: after finally trying one of the butterscotches, I think Earl Grey might have a competitor for my favorite.
  17. I'm dining with my vegan girlfriend so the fine folks at Whole Foods are catering my Thanksgiving. Gardein roasts, farro stuffing, olive oil potatoes, green beans, Brussels sprouts, gravy, cranberry relish and a vegan pumpkin pie. Not too shabby. Even better, she doesn't like the Brussels sprouts. Hooray for me!
  18. I, too, enjoyed the grand opening. I was there when it opened and was happy to see so many there. I picked up some bark, some callets (or whatever you call the pure chocolate), and some bon-bons. And now I am waiting for the website because I can only remember what three of the four bonbons I bought were. I got vanilla, Earl Grey, butterscotch and...i just can't remember!
  19. Folks, I was wondering if anyone out there had a recommendation to get some dongpo rou in the area? I'm guessing Rockville or Falls Church will be the where, but I was hoping to find a good rendition. Yeah...I've got a hankering for some fatty pork, I guess.
