  1. Looks like City Kitchen has opened in the old Pepi's Pizza Box in the Trade Center Plaza on Pickett in Alexandria. This is the strip mall with the Mediterranean Bakery, Home Depot, and post office. They have a website and, according to their Yelp profile, they are part of the "Fat City Restaurant Group" that includes Shooter McGee's and TJ Stone's. From the menu, it looks to be American and quite a bit fancier than the ol' Pepi's. (They don't seem to sell lottery tickets, for example.)
  2. I actually drive by that strip mall a couple times a month as I head to the Super H-Mart. I'd seen the signs for Hunan Taste but it never looked open. Oh, and to Steve, Ericandblueboy and others that went, my turkey sandwich lunch and I are quite jealous.
  3. Wish I could! Sadly I don't think I can make the trip from Greenbelt and back in an hour. Then again, I did watch "The Cannonball Run" recently...
  4. Just so we can keep Google from keying in on Kibbee's link, here's the website for the Fairfax Hunan Taste: Hunan Taste I want to try the Divine Incense Mint Pork. And the Chrysanthemum Fish because I've always seen it in books and such, but never actually had it.
  5. Well, Tyler Cowen reviewed it today, so I'm guessing it's open. Looks like we need a new topic...and a group of NoVA folks to come with me so I can order many dishes.
  6. Actually, according to Tres Hermanas' website, it is Tres Hermanas at that address.
  7. I think Bistrot du Coin still serves one, but it doesn't look too fancy. Le Diplomate seems to have one on their Brunch and Mid-day menus. As it's $17.50 and says it has "confit tuna" I'm guessing that's the fancy-dancy kind.
  8. I'm starting a topic for a restaurant I've never been to, but goodeats was kind enough to translate something for me, so I thought I'd share the information. Namely, last week I went to the estimable Elephant Jumps for some fried watercress salad and banana blossom salad, and while there I saw that the nearby Jasmine Garden had set out a couple of boards with Chinese upon them: Blackboard and Whiteboard Specials at Jasmine Garden (Note, I tried embedding them but they were just massive.) As I'm always interested in finding out "what's on the board" in any restaurant, but especially Chinese ones, I imposed upon goodeats to see if she could translate them and, perhaps, figure out what cuisine they might specialize in. Her response: Now I suppose a question is: has anyone ever tried the "on-the-board" specials here? I'll admit the ones on the whiteboard sound good to me. Or, I guess, anything here. Their regular menu does seem to be a bit of your standard American Chinese/Japanese food, with a few more less common dishes (three cups chicken, fish fillet in superior pickle sauce, etc.)
  9. What if you're a simple man who just likes cheese? I mean, sometimes, all the cheese I eat, I think buying wholesale would save me money...
  10. I often feel the same in this season of everything pumpkin spice, but, well, even I have to admit their Pumpkin Spice Pumpkin Seeds are yummy!
  11. Well, it's the only place I seem to find the yummy Ní³i Síríus chocolate. And, if you are on a dessert kick, Whole Foods carries Bethlehem Bars which are great!
  12. Thanks! Maybe I'll pop by this weekend and try get a 1000+ calorie bomb. I think I remember their menu having a zillion combos. Lotus seed is traditional right? (I think they even had sharks fin ones.)
  13. Zombie thread...revive! I suppose the Mid-Autumn Festival is coming up soon and I had a question for the board: anyone ever tried the mooncakes at Cha Kim Phung in Eden Center? I was at EC last weekend picking up some beef jerky and saw these guys have mooncakes...and might make them themselves? I would have just bought some but, well, mooncakes are expensive so I thought I'd ask if anyone here gives them thumbs up or down.
  14. Penzey's sells dill seed in 1-lb bags. They have stores in Rockville and Falls Church and I'm betting one or both has it available. Also, just thinking, dill seed is used in Indian cuisine, right? If so, places like Patel's or Lotte Plaza or any other market with a large Indian customer base might carry it in large® amounts as well.
  15. Just wondering about that lot, has that "immediate right turn" after turning from Gallows Road always been there. The one that sort of forces people from gumming up the entrance. I swear a few years ago I was in this strip mall and it wasn't like that.
  16. Had a great meal here tonight. Started off with a starter on their "specials" board yum hua plee which was a delicious banana blossom salad that included shrimp, chicken, lots of onion, in a sort of sweet and sour sauce. I followed that with kanom jeen nam ya described on their menu as "spicy tuna curry over thai style noodle, some small fish balls, some greens". Sort of a mix-your-own curry using rice noodles, mung bean sprouts, some...pickles, and some other yumminess. You mix those with an amazing fish curry studded with some tuna balls...yum!
  17. Whatever is chosen as waffle iron, you'll have to see if this video is right in its assessment (note: mute before it plays...it's better that way). I kinda want a waffled donut now...
  18. The Sweethome (sister site to The Wirecutter) says the best waffle maker is the Chef's Choice WafflePro Express.
  19. I think it's the corporate policy of the overlords at Aldi that Trader Joe's (Joe's's? Joes?) can only be located in areas with badly-designed parking lots with not enough spaces. I've noticed the same phenomenon with warehouse clubs. I figure if Trader Joe's ever opened a warehouse club variant, it would have only one parking space...and that would be for a handicapped placarded motorcycle.
