  1. From my experience there, you/I/we probably aren't a teen who lives in/near Annandale. As you can see above, most of the places there are mainly found through their Instagram accounts (they update their accounts pretty often and it's about the *only* way to find the hours if they are in soft open). We are getting old, my friends. Now, I have no idea if what Roots Thai or Balo Kitchen are serving is "authentic" at all (for whatever cuisine they are taking from: Thai, Taiwanese, etc.), but so far what I've had is definitely tasty. And much different from most of the places in Annandale (i.e., not really Korean focused/based)
  2. Yep! It's the location directly next to the KMart (northish/to the left as you look at it) that used to be...Myeongdong Cafe? Something like that. It's around the corner from where the Snocream bus used to ply its wares.
  3. All I care about is that I can see the dang menu on my phone. Flash menu? GraaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! (I don't like.) PDF menu? I don't mind this because you might have a fancy menu with nice design. But try to use a font above, say, 3 points. Utility over style, please. HTML 5 menu with fancy effects? With a template you usually do okay as it can handle a phone. Straight HTML? Good job. Text file? Ooh. I like you.
  4. I figured we need a topic for the rather interesting The Block in Annandale (Here's their Yelp since their "main" page is the Instagram account, as it is for most of these places.) Currently at The Block are: Snocream Company (Yelp) Pokeworks (Yelp) Balo Kitchen (Yelp) (Facebook) (might be out of soft opening) Roots Thai (Facebook) (I think is still in soft open) Block Bar Munch (ice cream topped donuts, not open yet) So far, I've tried the first three. Snocream is a veteran of Annandale with their shaved-ice-cream concoction (good!). Pokeworks is poke bowls and the one I've tried was good. I've tried Balo Kitchen and I'll say the Street Bread with sausage was yummy, and most of their menu looked intriguing. I'll probably go try Roots Thai soon. (As I don't drink, I can't attest to the Bar.) Now, every time I've gone here I'm fairly certain I might have been the oldest person there. And as it is a big concrete box with hard tables, it does get to "get off my lawn" levels of noise for me, but, well, I'm not the target audience. Anyone else out there have experiences to share? If so, we might want to break these up into separate threads.
  5. My guess is it might indeed be a Squarespace template: https://www.squarespace.com/templates/?category=food-and-drink That said, I do like at least three of those places! ETA: Actually, if you look at the Pacific theme's page, you'll see the newly opened (and pretty dang good) Pokeworks site. So, yeah, probably a thing.
  6. Hmm. Well, the strongest "common" Italian blue cheese I can think of is gorgonzola piccante. But there are others like I'blu, or brebis. Hmm.
  7. As we have all heard by now, the inventor of General Tso's chicken, Peng Chang Keui, died a couple days ago. So, that got me wondering: what is the best General Tso's in DC? Fair warning, I've never actually had General Tso's, authentic or not, but I'm thinking it's time to have some in his honor. ETA: This was my post number 666!
  8. Thanks! Not that different than usual. I've been to a few places on holidays where the prices go up!
  9. I appear to be a +0 this year for Thanksgiving, so I guess I'll take a look around at the menus. The Kinship menu does look good if ominously "priceless". Then again, Maggiano's Thanksgiving Menu doesn't have a price either. Probably the same for both...
  10. I guess Inn at Little Washington got a special non-DC exemption? I thought this guide was supposed to be District-only.
  11. Rose's says one star for Rose's Luxury and two for P&P: ETA: Oh. Looks like tweets are embedded...
  12. If you go inside, it's directly to your right, next to the produce section. Sort of the other side of the store from the other food stores.
  13. Other things to note: The Swiss Bakery is expanding. They took over the space next door and are remodeling now. I've many a time tried to go there for lunch on the weekend and tables are impossible. Hopefully this will help. Inside the Lotte there is another food stall: Deli Manjoo (warning: sound!). They sell fresh made bungeoppang (aka taiyaki) and little walnut cakes (hodo kwaja?). Both good when I tried them. I didn't see any hotteok but I'm hoping they have those too.
  14. There is also, of course, Penzey's in Falls Church. You can get quite a lot of their spices unground as well.
  15. Yeah. I've definitely seen the Ines Rosales ones at Whole Foods.
  16. It's essentially corn gruel you drink, right? Sort of a sweet liquid tortilla (made from masa!). I think I had it once at a Salvadoran place and it was spiced with alguashte which, I'll admit, is not my favorite flavor. (ETA: I think this is the powder you had on it. It's mainly ground pumpkin seeds, I think.) You are right. It's an odd sensation. Made me long for some banal-by-comparison horchata!
  17. Yeah. Milling would at least crack the kernels (if that's what they are called). Much like popcorn, you need the whole kernel to pop. I'm going to have to make/buy some popped sorghum now. Or popcorn at least!
  18. I'm pretty sure any sorghum you find might be poppable. I know, for example, that the first recipe on the back Bob's Red Mill Sorghum is for Popped Sorghum! I used to buy Mini Pops quite often when my local Mom's stocked them. Sadly they stopped carrying them.
  19. I like the bun cha ha noi at Hai Duong. But I'm not a Vietnamese expert so "best" means "tastiest to Matt, damn the authenticity".
  20. Looking at their Yelp and other websites, it does look like they do have some full-on Sichuan food. Double cooked pork, cumin beef. I'm interested in the salty pot-stewed duck because, well, I don't even know what that is! I might have to hit it up this weekend. ETA: Looking at the characters and doing a little google-fu, it looks like it's actually Nanjing Salted Duck (盐水鸭). Maybe they do Nanjing cuisine like Fairfax's Nanjing Bistro?
  21. Hmm. From DAR, your best bet is to head north because there isn't much south. North (and northeast) of there, though, you have places like The Oval Room, Founding Farmers DC, Old Ebbitt, Pennsylvania 6, Woodward Table... I think those are all 15-20 minutes walk away. I'm sure more people here will know more. Do you have any preferences for cuisine? Any dietary needs?
  22. Well, the Sweethome recommends a Proctor Silex model. My last waffle iron was a while ago, so I don't have any personal recommendations.
  23. Well, Wikipedia seems to say that allium tuberosum is called both Chinese chives and garlic chives, so you should be safe. Answered by Don! And, yes, to me the one on the left looks like they were harvested before inflorescence. My rule of thumb: hollow = chives, flat = Chinese chives.
