  1. Yikes...sorry for upsetting, um, everyone? I was responding to a joke made by another poster to let him know he wasn't alone...didn't know it would turn into a firestorm. Personally, I still don't think there's anything wrong with being disappointed in being bumped from what is sure to be an amazing experience, but apparantly I should. I do appreciate the amount of effort it takes to organize events and have been openly thankful for every event that I've attended. Maybe I should just put more winking faces in every post...sigh...
  2. So we weren't the only ones who got the shaft? And here I thought we were special! No, I'm not bitter...not at all...
  3. Now that we've got our dinners set, we're looking for a place where three families can meet for breakfast on Saturday morning...it has to be breakfast, rather than brunch, because we have my grandmother's birthday lunch that day...any ideas?
  4. We'd love to come...but I work in Arlington, and getting to Rockville on the Metro on a Tuesday/Wednesday would be...unfun. HOWEVER, I don't work in the office on Mondays (hooray!) -- any chance of having it on a Monday in September?
  5. I don't think tripewriter was suggesting that he tips less than 20% -- just that he has an issue with the new Per Se policy.
  6. I love OT, too -- I particularly love being able to make reservations at, say, 2 a.m., which is when I'm up and able to be doing stuff like that online. Plus, it's great for finding restaurants in other locations -- for example, Wheaton, Illinois -- where not much foodie attention is necessarily spent.
  7. If by "raw crap" you mean the jicama pieces provided along with the standard chips, I have to say that I really enjoy it -- sprinkle with a little lime juice from the slice provided and dip it in the salsa. Yum.
  8. Ok, schedule is as such: Thursday, arrive, spend day with Grandmama, dinner at Alinea; Friday, day in Chicago, lunch at Topolobampo, dinner at TRU, drinks with friends...somewhere...hmmm...; Saturday, G-ma's 88th! Hooray! Lunch at Emilio's in Wheaton, plane to Minnesota and more family events Thanks for your help!!!
  9. Normally, this would be an easy decision, but we'll be sweltering in Cumberland that day...have a great time!
  10. Thanks for the info! I've made reservations at Tru for our fancy dinner and gone ahead and made reservations at Topolobampo, too -- couldn't resist!
  11. We'll be in Chi-town for one, and only one, nice dinner in September -- so where should it be? It's been years since I lived there...are Everest and Charlie Trotter's still the creme de la creme? Or has Tru taken their place? How's Aubriot faring these days? We haven't been to Topolobampo yet -- is it worth making it our one nice meal? I think that Ray's is better than any steakhouse I ever visited when I lived there, and I'm not really looking for a "different" restaurant like the Green Zebra, etc. We'll be doing "regular" restaurants (read: my old haunts) with friends -- I'm looking for a special place for just the two of us
  12. It's my policy to always point it out -- it may be their mistake, but that's what it (usually) is, a mistake. If they wish to comp you the drinks, then let them tell you that -- most restaurants I've eaten at will say, for example "the appetizers were on us" or "the second round was from chef" -- don't make the decision for them.
  13. I have to say that, personally, nope. I don't mean to be ungrateful, but I found the food to be mediocre, and I had to admit that I found the service polite but spotty -- my main dish, for example, came out (with a number of others) and was placed up up the lamps on the counter -- so I could watch the sauce congeal -- as we waited for other dishes to come out... I had a fine time -- great company! -- and perhaps I've been spoiled by Corduroy and Eve, etc., but I found that even at 50% off, I felt that it was a little expensive for the experience. Our total (not counting the outrageous bar bill) was $94/person.
  14. Hmm...maybe it depends on what you get on your slice? I just get plain cheese and don't recall finding it sweet at all...maybe I'll have to make a 'za run for lunch today for research purposes!
  15. Just to note that the Italian Store (in Arlington) does pizza -- and delicious pizza at that -- by the slice. A real benefit to living on Lee Highway!
  16. Oh, how I wish I'd known! I have been working like the proverbial pooch and am in desperate need of something to look forward to -- would anyone care to attempt DG next Tuesday? That would be 7 projects from now, if anyone cares...
  17. I've been given the responsibility of tracking down locations and prices for renting a barbecue grill (or two) for an end-of-summer party at the apartment complex I manage. I'm finding this to be a difficult task, as I have no idea where to start...any ideas/leads/etc.? It's bring your own meat (we supply sides, drinks, and desserts), and I know just the place to get mine ETA: Oooooooh, I'm a clam! And so honored...
  18. And Tuesdays are the WORST day of the workweek for me -- I always need some form of libation after 5 p.m. on Tues. Anyone up for a drink (next week)?
  19. This is the place that serves the deviled eggs at the bar, yes? Is that still the case? We haven't made it yet
  20. D'oh! Curse "FastReply"! I hadn't seen the second page -- was wondering why my reply was all out of order! I will have to check the calendar about the 24th (it's ringing a bell for some reason...) but will let you know ASAP.
  21. Corduroy work for us (though we were there just this weekend) -- what time does the gang usually congregate? Craig's stuck at work until 6 p.m. (in Bethesda), and I have an appt. in Arlington until 6:30-7...
  22. We usually tip on tax, too -- though my parents tip on pretax, and my sister, well, we won't get into that here. As for Galileo -- yes, please! Anyone want to make it an outing?
