  8. Yeah GB sucks ventworm malt...I'm sure the Morimoto joint will do stellar business, but not sure I can get that excited about it oh well, just more reasons to avoid the whole Tyson Corner area.
  9. My problem is I'll be in the swamps of New Jersey most of Saturday and have a soccer game early Sunday afternoon, so my ability to cook something is limited. Plus by the time I arrive (around 4) I'm sure most people will be stuffed. So....I can bring something lame like garbage bags (if still needed) or beer...open to suggestions... Don't eat everything before I arrive!
  10. Canales deli at Eastern Market has good flour and corn tortillas...check where you order sandwiches

  12. back from the trenches...or I should say gutter. The Lankford farm is truly an impressive operation and story that I don't have enough knowledge to tell...but without help the Lankford farm is in serious jeapordy. The farm has probably 12 greenhouses in various stages of dismantling, the biggest greenhouse is an acre big! We helped finish dismantling one and then helped transport some of the most delicious smelling and tasting thyme to the new farm. All the plants are grown in a raised gutter system which when fully operational recycles pretty much everything for maximun nutrition and flavor. even after putting in 5 hours of solid work we only made a small dent in what needs to be done. Yet what we accomplished Dave said would take him and his 2 helpers 2 days to complete. The man is not only moving his entire farming operation, he is also making 5 trips to DC a week to deliver produce to his customers, a 2 hour trip from his farm to DC. one way. And to make matters more dire, he needs to have most of his new farm operational by October 15 in time for the first frost. Dave Lankford gave us a tour of the operation and it truly is impressive. The next time you go to Restaurant eve, maestro, galileo, cityzen, zaytinya, jaleo, Inn at Easton, Poste, (he supplies about 15 restaurants in DC) and see micro greens, taste intense herbs (he grows probably 8 different types of rosemary, at least 5 different types of thyme, is experimenting with growing the only fresh bay leaves around), have beautiful salad greens, robust out of season strawberries, odds are it came from the Lankford farm. Dave said he grows about 100 different products. and to top it all off, the Lankfords are some of the nicest people you will ever meet! Any help we at Donrockwell.com can give will be greatly appreciated. any spelling errors due to crappy keyboard and exhaustion!

  14. ahhhh, yes I knew I had another, better caption...couldn't remember this morning...I blame Thrasher's wine. so new caption line: "have you seen this man? Donrockwell.com"
  15. I have a late t-shirt design idea that came to me around my third glass of champagne last night at Eve: on the back of the t-shirt a silhouette of Don Rockwell holding a wine glass with the caption "If found return to donrockwell.com" alternatively the crass route "Suck my ventworm nut..donrockwell.com" of the other suggestions I like "I eat and tell at donrockwell.com"
  16. I also get Saveur and had the same reaction...not too crazy about the redesign. I thought the old cover made the magazine stand out, now it looks like any other run of the mill food magazine. Haven't had a chance to read the stories yet. It is by far my favorite cooking/food magazine and the only one I subscribe to.
  17. Most of the hot dog vendors carry Deer Park or similarly lower priced bottled water.
  18. Bronze nomination: Corduroy Leave the restaurant, hang a right, down the hall, just past the gym.
  19. My parents recently built a house in Calabash, NC (a short hop north of the border from Myrtle Beach, really where the N. Myrtle Beach sprawl ends)...and the whole area is where the morbidly obese come to eat. Virtually every restaurant that I have been to subscribes to the More is More philosophy. If it's not your usual line up of chain restaurants then its middle brow places (a lot of Italian) that serves mega-portions. Seriously when they talk about the obesity problem in America, Myrtle Beach is pretty scary...especially the children. However, I have found a few gems Granny Allyn's in Calabash is a country diner that screams authenticity, the whole restaurant is a smoking section, they have at least 6 different types of sausage on the menu and some killer biscuits. Place closes at 2pm Calabash Creamery serves some tasty and interesting ice cream. Randy's Meat is a great butchery store on route 17 around Ocean Isle, NC The Silver Coast Winery actually makes some half way decent wine...yes wine in North Carolina (although they get their grapes from inland parts of NC and Georgia) Calabash is known for its Calabash style seafood, which translates into if its from the ocean we batter it and deep fry it, and down on the waterfront are a string of Calabash fish houses...none really stick out as better than the other but if cheap deep fried seafood is your thing than the Dockside restaurant is probably your best bet. Myrtle Beach is great for the ocean, fishing, golfing, putt-putt and strip joints... bring your own steaks.
  20. This is a total pisser. I've been drinking at the Cap Lounge since 1996. I wouldn't be surprised that if you added up all the times I've been to the Lounge it would equal a year of my life spent there. I've even brought my bartender to DC United games! The Lounge truly was a home away from home for me. Sad day in the Life of Tweaked.
