  1. The worst service I ever had was at the Tequila Grill. Went for happy hour with a friend, and it wasn't crowded. Ordered a margarita, received it fine. Waitress came back, and I ordered a refill. It never came. After 10 mins or so, I flagged her down. Asked for the refill, it never came. Flagged down a second time (third refill order), it never came. I decided to forget it and we asked for the check. The check came (only one margarita, thankfully) and we paid. My friend went to use the restroom so I sat at the table waiting. The same waitress came up to me and says "Did your friend order a margarita?" Uhhh, yeah, something like that.
  2. I always try to do the proper research ahead of time (ie which places have good service and have the entire menu avialable) and I've never had an unsatisfactory experience. Places I loved during past RWs: Corduroy, Tosca, DC Coast, TenPenh, Ceiba. I know the DC Coast/Ceiba/Ten Penh family limits you on the desserts, but there are always at least 5 appetizers and the desserts they give you are still good, if a little cheaper than what you'd normally get. The sea bass I had at TenPenh for January's Restaurant Week is still my favorite meal of 2005. Tosca is very flexible with their menu. They have 4 courses (appetizer, pasta, entree, dessert), and you can do pretty much anything for your first two courses (app-entree, app-pasta, pasta-entree). For August's RW, I'll be making an inaugural visit to 1789, and I'll probably make a return visit to Tosca. If the funds are good that week I'll try to hit another new place. edited: thought I should clarify, you can only have three courses at Tosca, but you get to choose 3 of the 4, granted it ends in dessert.
  3. Ohhhh. I don't understand, but I'm accepting. My hometown of Buffalo has plenty of its own culinary quirks with their various rules, e.g. the beef on weck and the chicken wing.
  4. Can anyone explain what the deal is with their Brat Night that they have every few months? Seems kind of random for an ice cream shop to dedicate themselves to serving bratwurst every so often.
  5. The ice cream concoctions at Cold Stone and other similar places are too much of a good thing. After a few bites, the goo just bcomes too sickeningly sweet. And they give you so much of it, even in the small sizes. (Do I sound like a 70 year old man here?) Discovering the likes of the Del Ray Dreamery really changed my view on the marble slabs. I could eat gallons of the Wisconsin custard and not get sick of it.
  6. Anyone been on Thursday lately to see if they have the fried oyster po boy? I was there maybe a month and a half ago. It was listed on their website, but when I got there, they had the soft shell crab in its place. However, the next week they listed both the soft shell crab AND the po boy on their menu. I really want to take an out of town guest there tomorrow for a po boy, and I'm hoping they'll have it.
  7. Have reservations tomorrow night's 11 pm happy hour for a whopping 14 people. Hope they are well stocked. Thought I'd share an e-mail exchange I had last week: And the reply:
  8. Am I correct in thinking that the simple addition of the cheese and rabe turns a $5 sandwich into an $8 sandwich, or am I reading the menu wrong?
  9. The shadow has been lifted. Showed up about 12:15 and Roberto was very cheerful. I could tell it was going to be a good day. My friend, who was still leary of the pork shoulder, went with the sausage and was very impressed (thank goodness). I went with the pork. This time the pieces of bread were really big and the sauces & toppings heaped on without reservation. I would probably declare this the best sandwich I ever had there, but I got a lot of crispy burnt ends, which made chewing through the sandwich a little difficult. However, that's just a minor quibble. I didn't have any gristle. I'm happy to say the pork shoulder magic was back in full force. This was also the first time I got a good look at the pizza. I'll probably try that on the next visit.
  10. Well, tomorrow will be a moment of truth for me at the Galileo: a return to the pork shoulder, and a second chance at a first impression for one of my friends. I posted this at e-gullet a while back: and later: I've been back since and had the hot dog and enjoyed it very much, but the shadow of the last pork shoulder disappointment has lingered. It seems the bread they're using is now a smaller and more uniform size, and Roberto is more careful with the meat. Back when they first started, he apologized on several occasions for putting too much on. So not only do I have to try to impress my friend again, I need to impress myself. I'll report back.
  11. Tried my first Orca Platter two weeks ago (whole lobster, dozen oysters, dozen shrimp, dozen clams, dozen crab claws), so I'd like to share my thoughts. What this thing really needs is some alaskan king crab instead of the jonah claws. While we were all excited about the size of this platter, in the end we thought next time we'd probably rather have two Walrus #4s for just a little more money. Those crab claws are a little hard to work with and aren't that flavorful. Does anyone know if you can buy just the lobster separately?
  12. Just discovered the Milwaukee place mentioned in the first post. It's near the intersection of routes 50 and 28. They had the malted milk ball, which was very tasty. I came upon it by accident, passing by on my way to Willard's for some BBQ. It seems everyone and their brother has these little signs nailed into the grass at the side of the road in those parts, advertising their store. It looks like they have 4 flavors, chocolate, vanilla, some lo carb vanilla thing, and the flavor du jour. Later in the day I paid a visit to the Dreamery and had the delicious Dusty's Almond Toffee. I was a big fan of Cold Stone when I first tried it, but after trying the Wisconsin style custard, CSC just seems like an oversweet gooey mess.
  13. Should've had the soup! Seriously, their soup is really good. I wish I had seen this earlier to warn you about those soft shell clams. Their hush puppies are good too. But if you stray from a soup --> crabs w/hushpuppies --> beer menu, your chances for disappointment skyrocket.
