  1. You know, if they hadn't announced the contest was over 24 hours after it started, I could've actually submitted the above idea. Maybe I'll take NCP's idea and open up some competition. "Which custard place?" "That CRAZY Custard place!"
  2. Those $5 pizzas are terrific, but holy crap, that pork and pinot is new to me! Has anyone partaken in those choices yet? Could you make a whole meal out of two or three of them?
  3. Forgot to report on this last week, but took my parents on their now-annual trip to Ray's last Sunday. Since the scallop appetizer is now a given I decided to forego dessert in order to have my frist try at one of their soups. I chose the crab bisque, which was as velvety and delicious as any soup I've ever had. And I also had another first -- the much-ballyhooed hanger steak. This is as beefy as it gets, although I think I prefer the flatiron (is that coming back anytime soon?). I didn't even really need a dessert anyways since the hot chocolate gave the meal a sweet finish. But the real story here is how enchanted my father has become with the place. Some relatives were also in town that day and without hesitation he gave the go ahead to ditch them to keep our reservations. After the first bite we never looked back.
  4. They didn't have $5 Martinis, Appletinis, or Cosmopolitans? I got the invite that mentioned these, but didn't end up going. The email also said that "Martinis & Kamikazes is the second Wednesday of each month," whatever that means.
  5. After my last visit I didn't think it was physically possible for them to stuff any more food into those styrofoam containers. But they did it. In southern tradition, I think the amount they give you is known as "sh!t tons." This time I went with the aforementioned turkey chops. They were outstanding, but had one drawback: small pieces of bone. Be careful when you're digging in. They recommended the chops "smothered," so I agreed. This involves a rich gravy in addition to the peppers and onions that accompany many of the dishes. I recommend adding the word "smothered" to every item you order on the menu. "Turkey chops, smothered please. And some potato salad, smothered. And to finish I'll have some peach cobbler, smothered." One other thing I noticed is that their menu is divided into lunch specials and dinner specials, which is a little deceiving. Really, it's just divided into sandwiches and entrees, which can be ordered at any time. The latter come with two sides, and the former have the option of adding one side.
  6. Wow, Don, I was thinking the exact same thing. But think of all the possibilities where they wouldn't even have to change their web address: Del Raydrea Mery Del Rayd Reamery Del Raydre Amery Or you could really mess with people's minds with some spoonerisms: Drel Ray Deamery Dream Ray Delery Del Dray Reamery edited for spacing and to add my real choices: Red America Freedom Custard That Crazy Custard Place
  7. Note to all: The Del Ray location is closed on Tuesdays, as I found out last night to my disappointment. I knew in the back of my head that the Dreamery was too, but forgot that as well. So my trip to the hood last night was a dismal failure. However, their loss was Cheesetique's gain!
  8. Keep in mind Ebbitt's oysters are half price only Monday through Thursday, 3-6 and 11 til 1 am. Also Monday being Columbus Day, I don't think they'll have them then. But Tosca gets my vote too. You know, checking out their menu, I never realized how expensive their normal menu is. When you do the pre-theater menu, it's $32 for three courses, and many of the entrees themselves are around 30 bucks.
  9. Well, paid my first visit to Kotobuki last night. Since I was the person who made the recommendation to the group, I was charged with discovering the hidden entrance and being the first to wade my way through the sets of red curtains. The Beatles' album "Help!" played in the background. We ended up eating so quickly that I didn't find out whether they'd put another CD on afterwards or just repeat the first one. The reason for the speedy service was that my party of three was the only one in there the entire time. It was a little early, like 5:45, but by the time we left around 6:30, only one other person came in -- and that was to pick up a carryout order. They are practically giving the stuff away up there, people! I was amused to see they even advertise "$1 sushi" on the front of the building. The biggest hits were the lobster sushi and the eel roll. I was also very pleased with the fresh scallop, something I'd never tried in sushi restaurant before. I couldn't remember it was the flounder Don had recommended in an earlier post so I'll have to try that next time. The table even ordered a second round of choices since we were still a little hungry and "it's only a $1!!," as we reasoned. That same excuse, and the tasty fish, we keep me coming back.
  10. Well I guess I was more puzzled by what it covers. For example, last week's entry gave this description for a CVS closing: "Food service closed Sept. 8 for evidence of rodents and dirty floors and storage areas. Reopened Sept. 13." Does this include all food in the store, like candy bars and potato chips, or just food in the refrigerated case? I guess that would explain why sometimes you'll walk into a drug store and some cases are completely empty.
  11. The Washington Post runs a compilation like this every week. It's not always in the same place, so I'll go to www.washingtonpost.com and type "health code violations" in the top news search bar. (for some reason it's not coming up with any results today, but I've been doing this for months.) What puzzles me is you'll often see entries for places like CVS and Rite Aid.
  12. Also noticed Tom knocked The Little Fountain Cafe. There was a time where it was his weekly recommendation for just about any request.
  13. Has anyone been to McCormick and Schmick's recently? I've heard talk of this blurb on the Washington Business Journal website: http://washington.bizjournals.com/washingt...ml?jst=cn_cn_lk I have yet to find out if there is a minimum donation. Getting off topic now, but $50 to the Red Cross is probably the path I'll take, since Kimpton hotels is offering a free night's stay to anyone who makes such a contribution.
  14. Couldn't find any posts on this and I have nothing to report since I've never been, but it looks like they are offering two-for-one dinner entrees Sunday through Wednesday in September: http://www.riedelsrestaurant.com/
  15. Well I'm back so I thought I'd give a brief report. The house we got was so swank and so close to the beach that I didn't leave the compound the entire time I was there. But I did manage to stop at the High Cotton BBQ place on the way out of town since it was right on the way. While not the best I've ever had, it was pretty darn good stuff, and cheap. For $4.95, I got a pulled pork sandwich combo that came with two sides and cornbread. One of the sides was a Brunswick stew, which was filled with pulled chicken and vegetables. I'm still impressed that it was considered a side when it was hearty enough to be a main course. The corn bread was unique in that it was more like a corn brownie. I think I would have preferred traditional, but it wasn't bad. The pork itself was also tasty.
  16. Thanks for the reply, Olive. Mr. Icebox, I posted the same question on egullet and got a response or two. Scroll to the bottom to read the post from Chiantiglace. It sounds like the very information we're looking for: http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=73335
  17. Anything in the pakora family. And my beloved murgh/chicken makhani. Actually Monica, I'm interested to hear how you pronounce the latter. I've seen spellings of makhni and makhani, and everyone tells me a different pronnciation. e.g., MOCK-nee, muh-CONN-ee.
  18. Hi All, Headed down to the Outer Banks starting Saturday and into the following week. (I'll be staying in Southern Shores, south of Duck and North of Kitty Hawk.) About a dozen of us have a house rented and will be doing most of our own cooking, but is there anything not to be missed? With so many people and varying schedules, we won't sit down to anything fancy, but I'm sure we'll do some exploring, so I thought I'd see if anyone here was familiar with the territory. Are there any walk in places where you can grab some fresh seafood (even maybe to cook up ourselves?), or maybe some BBQ? Where do the locals go? Thanks for your attention!
  19. Below is a short discussion on Ollie's we had back on egullet: http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showto...ndpost&p=713920 The thread's not solely devoted to it, but we discuss the history in the next few posts. I've only ever been to the L Street location. I understand they all used to be part of the same franchise, but I still don't understand why the L Street location doesn't look like a Trolley! I've also heard good things about the fettoosh, but have always stuck with the burger.
  20. OK, stopped in last night after work. The problems with high hopes is that they're too easily dashed. I tried the thali combo with chicken korma, butter chicken, and lamb roganjosh. The korma and butter chicken sauce seemed really watered down, the korma especially so. The lamb was actually decent and its sauce much thicker than the others. It didn't look like chicken tikka masala was an option, but I couldn't quite figure it out since the only staff member who spoke English was the manager, and he was busily running around. The naan was good. I might give them another chance with one of their kabob platters, since I'd prefer to have something that's not just scooped up from a steam tray. The portion sizes were ample, but not ridiculous. I could have eaten the whole thing in one sitting, but since I had a later engagement I turned it into two light meals. It's still the cheapest Indian in the area, and by no means bad. I do get cravings from time to time, so in the future it may hit the spot perfectly. But I don't see myself being a regular there.
  21. I think it might depend on what day you go there and what you order. I posted this on egullet a while back: You get the feeling that on the chef's day off, the replacement is using a totally different recipe to the normal one. But on good days, I still love the kung pao. But I'm sure it doesn't compare to these secret-menu Chinese establishments that seem to be all the rage these days. Who knows, maybe Mr. Chen's even has an exclusive menu?
  22. Hi all, Not sure exactly when, but recently a new Indian place opened up in the old Burrito Brothers spot on 18th street in Adams Morgan. It's called Chef's Kitchen and seems to be mostly a carryout operation, since there are only a couple of tables in the front. Has anyone been yet? I'll probably check it out one of these nights after work, but I thought I'd see if anyone had any comments first. I grabbed a menu and it looks like it covers all the Indian standards. They have a variety of kabob platters that come with all the fixins for $7-$9. There's also a specialities section of curries, which can also be ordered together as part of a combo platter in the $9 range. Probably the first thing I'll try to find out is the difference between the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Butter Chicken. The Tikka Masala description reads "boneless chicken breast with Chef's masala and fresh tomato with a honey sauce, garnished with fresh coriander. Simmered to prefection! (sic)" The Butter Chicken reads "freshly cooked boneless chicken thigh simmered in a tomato and honey sauce. Garnished with fresh coriander and Chef's personal touch." So it seems the major difference is light vs. dark meat and Chef's masala vs. Chef's "personal touch." I wonder what's so personal about his/her touch... The menu also lists a burrito and a gyro, and encourages you to try the "kabob dog."
  23. I'd be disappointed if the news just involved one restaurant. It's big, but not "rippling." Will we find out at the Tom Chat today? (why does that sound like an item at a Thai/Indian restaurant?) My guess: Tom Sietsema is getting his own TV show. Or, Don is getting his own TV show? They're both getting a TV show? I'm getting a TV show? That last one would be a shocker.
