  1. Thanks, Pat and KMango. I'm going to be in Dallas with a professional society conference. This is a regular request of mine (you could look around this time in the Atlanta thread and find a similar request) and is never an accomplishable goal--there are never good, low key, inexpensive restaurants within a cheap taxi ride of major convention/downtown type areas. I ended up choosing some place called Iron Cactus Mexican Restaurant and Margarita Bar. I'm so pained by needing to routinely (if only annually) accomplish this impossible task that I shouldn't have even posted here. I knew that there was nothing chow-ish that would fit the request of the crazy person who assigns me this task.
  2. Add me to the list of folks looking for a place in Dallas. I'm trying to arrange a dinner on a Saturday night for a group of roughly 20 with a tab of <$20/person, (not including EtOH) within walking distance or an inexpensive cab ride from the Hyatt Regency on 300 Reunion Boulevard (it's near Union Station). The food will need to be something that works for vegetarians, but otherwise no real limits. It pains me beyond belief to be charged with this responsibility. Any help very gratefully accepted.
  3. A friend of mine in Manhattan used to have seltzer delivered to his condo, just like milk used to be. I remember him once saying that it was delivered by the last guy who offered the service in NYC and, at some point in the time I've known my friend, it stopped because the guy retired (maybe sometime around 2000? don't remember). He always had flavored syrups to mix with the seltzer; it was great. Made me feel like eating at an automat.
  4. Thanks to the chef and crew at Spice Xing on Sunday night. They did a good job of handling an unexpected overflow on a Sunday night in which they were one of the few restaurants along the pike with electricity.
  5. No, just MIA from the boards. Child #2 combined with a job change into a more demanding (and more interesting) position have denied me the time to enjoy full participation. The other problem has been that with new job, I'm in a new location so don't drive to work. It's hard to do RPLC without a car .
  6. Wow. A great coffee shop and in such a great location. I love the Nickels Arcade.
  7. Is this the Cecile who is now at finewine.com?
  8. I also really like Penzey's cocoa (particularly the natural, but I think that's partially a function of using Dutch less often than natural, so I don't have a good benchmark)
  9. Cue (ha-ha, get it? 'que or cue?! hahahahahaha) the sad music. We're going red, hot and blue. The Smokehouse Grill rec I received via PM was vetoed because of price. Oh, well. Thanks for sharing recs, all.
  10. I did; thanks. Location pretty much makes previous conversations about this moot (plus, some are fairly old). Thanks, though! Thanks, kirite. Their website makes it look a bit more formal (and possibly pricey) than what I think we're after, but i appreciate the rec.
  11. Looking for recs for a caterer (no pick up, delivery only) at Sandy Point State Park (family reunion, prob in the neighborhood of 50-60 folks, lunch) for BBQ. My relatives are coming up with Adam's Ribs and Famous Dave's. I don't know from BBQ or catering in that area. Can you either give thumbs up or down for the two caterers on the table, or recommend us towards or against another? Thanks!
  12. Wow--Superdawg w/o Maurie and Flaurie on top? That just ain't right. Gawd do I miss the 'dawg. The menu looks like it's changed since the last time I was there (admittedly, many years ago). The now-called "Whoopercheesie" used to be the "Whoopskicheesie" (a much better name, IMHO, although I would be loathe go purchase one--would you go to a hamburger joint and order and hot dog?). I'm gettin' all nostalgic now.
  13. Having been excoriated by said owner, as well as some cultists, I totally hear you. It isn't worth it.
  14. I hesitate to suggest it, because in so many ways it can be insufferable (PM me for more details on why), but DC urban moms has a very active listserv that might also be a source of ideas and nanny shares. The main listserv is the first one referenced on this page: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/mailing-lists Good luck, and I wish I could tell you more from personal experience in the food industry. I just love to eat and prepare for friends, am not a professional!
  15. They've been closed due to snowstorms and surgery (nothing emergent) on owner, but they're open again and ice cream is, as always, fantastic. Sadly, no banana last night so I had to suffer through the ginger ice cream. Woe is me. Go often, it's worth it. I'm not a mango fan, but all who have had it have raved about it. And, when we asked the owner last night (whose name I always fail to catch), he admitted it was his favorite.
  16. Had a great meal there last night with friends that made me wonder why it had been so long since I had been. On the bright side, they were doing a booming business and at 7:00pm the bar area was >4people deep with folks waiting for tables. Had a great blood orange salad with fennel, celery, parmesan shaving and vinaigrette that was a special. Had a swordfish dish with tomato, kalamata, onion served with a couple of roasted potatoes. While I thought it was very good, it missed the mark only in that it was too sweet. Nonetheless, i would order it again. I guess the sweetness wasn't too bad.. Great tiramisu for dessert (really good, strong espresso flavor). Service was excellent. Price/couple was approx. $120 including tip. Everybody got starters, 3 pasta entrees and one swordfish entree, two got dessert and one bottle of wine. Again, food and service was good and I intend to return sooner rather than later.
  17. To say it is the best of the smithsonian restaurants I've been to is both accurate and damning with faint praise.
  18. I just made the double chocolate cookies from The Best Recipe. I don't have the cookbook with me, but this recipe looks awfully similar to my memory. They were enjoyed by many, including the cook (which is rare). Not surprisingly with all that chocolate, they're a lot like brownie cookies and they're very rich. I know many have recommended the World Cookies (I think that's the title, Dorie greenspan chocolate cookies with little to no flour). That's not really my style cookie, so have never pursued it. I could seeing making the Best Recipe cookies again and would recommend it to others. Oh, one unusual thing about these cookies--I actually got the number of cookies that the recipe said I would get out of them. Shocking! I almost never pull that off (what with the need to sample the dough carefully and all).
  19. I have an Atlas hand crank and really like it. I don't think it's difficult to use alone, but I 'helped' my mom make pasta with a hand crank when I was a kid so have been making pasta for years. The handles definitely fall out, and that's annoying, but you get used to it and learn to use it in a way that minimizes that happening. Glad you got one, Banco--hope you and kids enjoy it!
  20. A friend of mine tried this place recently a really raved. I've been meaning to stop in, but somehow it just hasn't worked out yet. Your post may be what pushes me over the edge...
  21. Just echoing the advice others have given. It's incredibly easy when they're newborns and most places (even fancy ones, provided you don't go at 8pm on a Sat) are pretty flexible about it. Enjoy it while you again, because eventually you pretty much have to get a babysitter (particularly if there is a #2).
