  1. And reasonable people can disagree on it. In fact, of the usual folks I go to VGTH with, about half agree with you. At $8/bowl at lunchtime, I might just have to retest my conclusions.
  2. Yeah, the mushroom one suffers for me too, not as much for flavor, but for the texture of the mushrooms. The "vegetable" option works better as your non-meat choice. I find myself ordering the "oyster" option more and more--the little bit of minerality just works for some reason.
  3. I recall having a similar dish in about 1998...in a small restaurant...in Fairfax. And not the good part. A google search for the exact phrase "grilled Caesar salad" (i.e., ruling out "grilled chicken Caesar salad," etc.) comes up with 29,500 hits.
  4. Yeah, but not from vines that mildew or gray-rot.
  5. Not sure why that matters. My point was that Cochon is a casual restaurant and comparing it to August serves neither.
  6. And if that's what you were expecting, you went to the wrong restaurant. Emerils is a rung down from August and Stella. I'd rather go to Clancy's or La Petite Grocery than Emerils.
  7. I suggest a Punch as well. [i have a recipe in this book, which also has many other awesome recipes.]
  8. Random Sequence Generator Here is your sequence: 8 6 2 9 5 7 4 1 3 Timestamp: 2011-09-26 22:31:04 UTC
  9. Engh. Too much strawberry bubble gum in too many of them. But I do love Bois de Boursan Chateauneuf-du-Pape rouge...which is now on the wine list at Jack Rose (and was at Trummer's the last time I looked).
  10. Smooth Ambler Distillery from West Virginia presents a (free) tasting of vodka, gin, white whiskey, and a little bit of aged bourbon TONIGHT at Jack Rose, 6-10pm. Also, (non-free) cocktails! Full disclosure blah blah blah blah.
  11. Well, Cajun food's home is about 2 hours from NOLA. Non-shellfish is tricky anywhere. I haven't been to Commanders (fine dining isn't really a priority for me--takes too much time). I think the consensus best restaurant in NOLA is Stella, but it's not the classic-ish Creole supper club-type atmosphere of Commanders. Near that price point and style, I adore Clancy's, and others would certainly recommend Brigtsen's as well. Send me a PM with your exact dates and I'll send you my full "what to do in NOLA" writeup, plus music recommendations (this offer, BTW, is open to anyone on the board).
  12. Fuck this summer. First we lose Ray Deter, who taught us it was OK to drink good beer and good liquor. Now we lose Joe Dressner, who taught us that wines from all over could sing. Joe Dressner was a lion. He was uncompromising. But above all, he was curious. WAAAAAY before curious was cool. And he continued that way his entire life. Goodbye, Joe. Long live real wine.
  13. This was posted by the estimable Mr. Maresca some five months ago, so not sure why it's just now getting play here. While I have a lot of sympathy for Mr. Maresca's view (and plenty of antipathy for Mr. Suckling's wine worldview), Mr. Maresca goes a bit too far in his characterization of the world of Tuscan wine. Sure, lots of previously vino da tavola Tuscan wines are now IGT, which, I guess, makes them less "Super" (using the Suckling, et al., definition). But IGT Toscana, and pretty much the whole IGT concept, only came about because of the emergence of the "Super" "Tuscan" class of wines ("Neither Super! Nor Tuscan! Discuss!"). So chill out a little, Mr. Maresca. But only a little.
  14. Excellia reposado tequila in my hotel room in San Diego. Raised in, but not dominated at all by, Sauternes barrels. About $60 retail here in CA, not sure of any distribution outside of CA. Brand is owned by the G'Vine people.
  15. May be too late, but this sounds like gamay territory to me. Or maybe a Frappato from Sicily, though that may be hard in your price range.
  16. No argument there. A connection to Louis Prima would be cool, though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWwIx0_sjKU
  17. And some of the people he willfully stiffed (or attempted to stiff) are friends of some of us. Goose, gander.
  18. Maybe the guys at Tosca told RD that they were getting Louis Prima to show up at G3. <delete...>
  19. Might I recommend a few friends and a bottle of El Dorado 15yo rum (full disclosure blah blah blah)?
  20. Exactly. Remember, it was Donna that was hit with the charges in Arlington, not Bonino.
  21. Tim Carman summarizes the current state of play. http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/the-reduction-of-roberto-donna/2011/08/18/gIQAXyeWZJ_print.html
