  1. I am willing to bet that it had something to do with rent increases. This assumption is based on the recent boom in construction on Jefferson Place (high end condos, whhheee!) and the closing of the legendary club Red (R.I.P.) for the same reasons.
  2. What about going veg for health reasons? As a person who has been flirting with the idea of going veg for a while, I wonder how much of a role health benefits play when other people have made the leap. As for fake meat, it's only worth my time when it's done well (i.e. Vegetable Garden - as mentioned above - or in the veggie/TVP tacos at Asylum ) It is my understanding that soy-based meatesque products are processed, genetically modified and are more often than not, served fried as to mimic the texture of meat - a preparation which defeats the purpose of a lowfat, vegetable-based diet. Right? Am I missing something here?
  3. Herb crusted roast beast stuffed with fois gras shaped like a lobster claw and a side of lobster tail wrapped with monk fish and caul fat which was drizzled with a beautiful mahogany-hued demi glace to match my fierce new hairdo. My taste buds are singing, my loins are warm and my special place is happy and tingley. Not really. I am actually eating a turkey sandwich (on wheat bread with swiss cheese, y'all) and some cranberry juice. No tingling. No warming sensation. No singing tastebuds. No new hairdo either.
  4. I had a similar experience at CPS back in June. That back room is fantastic! The food was good - considering that it was prix fixe for a group - and the service was top notch. Nora also has a really nice back room that was great for my (ex!)firm's holiday party last year. A perfect fit for a group of 12.
  5. If people were liquor, I would be Chartreuse. Rich, spicy, potent, rare, and amazing. That said, I enjoy it with a little bit of OJ and club soda.
  6. Are there any new standout dishes on the FF menu that I should look out for? I'm heading over tonight for a little wine-n-dine-whathaveyou.
  7. They can be inconsistent over there. I should have mentioned that I have - in the past - had to ask for veggies. Was your bartender a big latino guy or a ditzy blonde broad? They recently hired a woman who is about as smart as my tape dispenser. If you get to know Lui, you're well taken care of. Back to the topic at hand. I went to Adams Mill (yikessss, I know!!!) on Sunday with some friends to watch the Steelers game and I was surprised by their wings. They were lip-burning-spicy and were served with plenty of veggies and dressing. They are 25 cents a piece on Sundays. I also got to see a girl armwrestle a guy and win. Classy.
  8. Yes, but Iron Chef US is like the bastard gimpy stepcousin (twice removed) of the original Iron Chef. It is rare that I see anything interesting or innovative on that show. btw - What happened to the old Iron Chef episodes that were in syndication on Food Network?
  9. Me too! As for Bobby (booby?) Flay, I hate him like I know him. The mere mention of chipotle-rubbed-whatever makes me break out in a rash.
  10. I am not usually a wing eater, but I really like the wings at Marshalls. These guys have just the right amount of heat and are slightly crispy. Very tasty! They are 25 cents at happy hour (5-7pm) and I believe that they also run a special on Sundays during football games. I don't know if they deliver, but they are walking distance from Dupont Circle and they have a really fancy big screen tv above the bar.
  11. Indeed. The fact that Todd Terry is playing next weekend is more exciting - to me personally - than foodstuffs of any kind! Menu looks good though...it seems to be in the same ballpark as Gua Rapo.
  12. Oya does a good dark and stormy. I am also a huge fan of Chinatown Garden's flaming polynesian drinks. Ahoy, bitches.
  13. My digestif of choice is a glass of "the green stuff" (Pernod, yo - with water and ice) and a Parliament Light.
  14. Thanks to my recent kitchen gadget acquisition, I am about to nosh on: whole grain waffles with blueberries and raspberries savory chicken sausage (modeled after the Adger House "Kentucky style" recipe) roasted red potatoes and for dessert, a peach milkshake!
  15. Has anyone been to the Foggy Bottom farmers market on Wednesdays, and is it worth checking out?
  16. I had a terrible delivery experience with Taste of India last night. The vegetarian sampler platter that I ordered was not even edible! The daal was thin and mushy. The raita tasted off - like it had spoiled. The mulligatawny soup was too thick to eat and was obviously made with frozen mixed veggies. Worst of all was the alu gobi - which was tasteless and had a thick layer of orange oil on top of it. It was awful! Now I'm on the lookout for a reputable indian restaurant that delivers in NW DC. Something other than Heritage India - which has already been mentioned.
  17. Here's a blurb from DCist about canning. My plans for what's left of the summer include putting up dilly beans and watermelon pickles.
  18. They attempt to hide their militant vegan agenda behind seemingly harmless "scientific" studies. They have been waging a very public war on the dairy industry for a couple of years now, so the cheese study - as tempting as it is - doesn't surprise me.p.s. PCRM are the people who exposed the health risks of hi carb diets by releasing Dr. Atkins' autopsy to the media.
  19. Do you know what PCRM is?http://www.pcrm.org/ I would think twice before participating in a study sponsored by them.
