  1. No, but my friends Pat Sajak, Justin Timberlake and Steven Seagul (yes, SEAGUL) are.
  2. The last time that I was in prison, all that they gave me was a bologna sandwich with a juicebox. wtf?!
  3. Testify! Cafe Asia's happy hour is pretty sweet. In addition to the $2 draft and $1 a piece specials, they also have 1/2 priced Sapporo and sake! Gotta love getting full and loaded on the cheap. Something to keep in mind is that the happy hour special is also on SATURDAYS. Who knew?
  4. I have overdosed on Resurrection Ale and rosemary fries more than once. Another Baltimore gem is the nearby Dyonisus. They have a very impressive beer selection in the super-cozy lounge (which is no surprise since - as I understand it - longtime B.A. bartender James migrated there a little over a year ago). What you get there is what you would expect from a bar catering to hipsters who celebrate beer snobbery: All varieties of Chimay, Brooklyn Brewery (double chocolate stout!), Delirium, plus Brewers Art beers and various US microbrews. Word on the street is that the food in the main floor restaurant is quite tasty, though I haven't been. B'More CP review
  5. Speak for yourself! Personally, when I get off, it doesn't involve whining on the internet about the waiter who messed up my dessert order last night.
  6. Indeed. This is a great dish for sticky summer weather. It's fresh, light and it has a serious kick - which I personally love. The watermelon, feta and arugula first course is also tippytopnotch if you're looking for something that won't weigh you down (aka leave room for dessert - or cheese, if you "swing" my way). I thought that the goat ragu was alright, but a little too rich for my tastes. It's definitely not something that I could eat a whole plate of.
  7. This is great news. Though, I don't know who is more excited about it: me or the personal trainer that I'm going to have to hire once the move happens.
  8. My Dupont apartment flooded with evil stankwater from the small drain outside of my front door and since I slept through the Sunday night portion of the storm, I didn't realize that there was an issue until it was quite far along. We are running a dehumidifier - which seems to be working, but in the process, it's making the apartment extremely hot. Too hot to cook, and far too rank to even think about eating anywhere near it. Will definitely have to get it professionally cleaned. Stupid mother nature. If anyone can recommend a reputable place to rent a steam cleaner from or hire someone to do the dirty work for me, please PM.
  9. The Palena cafe is easily done on the cheap. A few months ago, I went with a group of 6 and we ordered the cheese plate and fry plate (which is pretty big, IMO) to split as appetizers and each ordered a $10 entree from the cafe menu - along with a reasonably priced bottle of wine, our bill was roughly $25/person and we were stuffed!
  10. There is a great Indian/Pakistani place on K just below 12th street. I don't know what it's called but the best way to describe it is that it looks like a gingerbread house from the outside. The draw at lunch seems to be the buffet, but you can also order off of their menu (which is small, but covers all of the necessary bases). I always order a kabob (I prefer chicken, but I've had the lamb and it's very good) which comes with rice, two side dishes and naan - a very substantial lunch for the price, which is roughly $7. If memory serves me correctly, customers pick from 4 or 5 (mostly vegetarian) side dishes. There are also a few bottles of sauce - which range from hot to hotter to fiiiiiiiiirrre! Don't miss out on the green sauce.
  11. Personally, I don't like it when they cover their sandwiches with marinara. Not only is it messy, but it can ruin a perfectly good lunch (example: the Steak and Cheese special). I am a big fan of the bratwurst - which I believe is a Wednesday special. With a side of their fries, it's a guilty pleasure reserved for once every couple of months. The Thursday special, a Cuban sandwich - with cumin spread, bread and butter pickles and fresh roasted pork - is also a hit and is large enough to share with a friend. My Breadline "standby" is the salami with herbed cream cheese and roasted red pepper sandwich. It never lets me down. Has anyone had their Gazpacho? I've been craving it lately but have found that their soups can be hit or miss.
  12. Based on the review in this thread, I tried the cuban today for lunch. I'll say that it was decent. 6 out of 10. My cheese wasn't really melted, which turned me off and I would have liked to have had more pickles. Good, crusty bread, though. I also really like the fact that it's not riduculously huge and gut inducing.
  13. G is for GROSS. don't drink the kool aid, dancole! that stuff masquerading as cow product in your "chalupa" isn't really meat. it's people. i stopped eating taco bell about 6 years ago after going to the "bulletproof bell" located on M St SE just off of 395. to put it frankly, my three taco supreme value meal came back to haunt me and i came dangerously close to landing in the hospital with dehydration after being violently ill for three days. never again! yuck.
  14. As far as I can tell, the Bardeo menu has changed. At least, what is listed on their website is different than what I had the last time that I ate there a couple of years ago. Speaking of Ardeo/Bardeo, I had the pleasure of dining at Ardeo over the weekend. On a Saturday evening, they filled up nicely without being obnoxiously crowded and loud. Everyone in my party of seven ordered something different so we were able to sample off of each other's plates. I had the mahi mahi - which is seared and served on top of a curried cous cous speckled with dried apricots and blanketed with delicate almond foam. The fish was done perfectly - very moist and flavorful. However, I do have to say that my friend's venison dish was the high point of the evening for me. The cashew/cardamom puree that it is served with is good enough to eat by itself or spread on a slice of bread. (that gives me an idea...) The cheese plate truly is something for the chef to be proud of. I should start out by saying that it's larger than any cheese plate that I've ever seen. There were three hard cheeses, and three softer varieties. The soft were: a goat, a gorgonzola/bleu and a super stinky and delicious cows milk cheese that was too gooey to pick up with a fork (this one was my favorite). The harder cheeses were a sheep cheese (comparable to manchengo), a cheddar variety and something else that I don't recall because I was too busy gorging myself on the aforementioned ultra-gooey and stinky cheese. Fresh fruit, quince paste and toasted bread accompanied the cheesy deliciousness. I'm not very big on sweets, but I'm glad that I didn't skip dessert this time around. We tried seven different desserts - a few of my favorite offerings were the strawberry soup with lavender flan, espresso semifreddo with homemade biscotti, and a peanut butter bomb with homemade cracker jacks. All were delicious but my personal favorite was the trio of sorbets: pineapple, passion fruit and a scoop of incrediblely refreshing orange sorbet that was literally bursting with flavor. I think that I would have been happy with just the cheese plate and a huge bowl of that orange sorbet. I've always enjoyed the wine selection at both Ardeo and Bardeo...you really can't go wrong! Thankfully, our server (Brian) knew what he was talking about when it came to "the juice" so that helped us make informed choices when pairing bottles with our food. Overall, we had a great meal and were pleasantly surprised at how affordable it was, considering the quality of the food. I'll definitely be back...though, next time, I'm going to try their brunch.
  15. the Giant at 9th and O NW (in DC) carries canning supplies in their "seasonal" aisles.
  16. that may have been your first mistake! as a general rule, i don't venture into AdMo after 5pm on the weekends. especially if i plan to eat! the number of tube tops per square foot is enough to make me lose my appetite. with that said, i've always enjoyed the reef's fantastic beer selection and cool bartenders. it is a great but often overlooked spot for an early-in-the-week happy hour. and if you're on the lookout for yummy bar snacks, their calamari is delicious (served with a spicey jalapeno aioli). has anyone been there for weekend brunch? it's been on my list of "things to try" for a while now.
  17. mmmm, that hot dog was delicious. though, the texture wasn't anything like what i was expecting it to be. (definitely more pate-ish than sausage-y, if that makes any sense). a little birdie told me that there were mini-reuben sandwiches on the cafe menu over the weekend. hopefully they will still be there the next time that i have a chance to stop in for a nibble. i hear that the homemade thousand island dressing that they are dressed up with is more betterer than the zippy mayonnaise on the fry plate.
  18. exactly. my family recipe also calls for brown sugar. in my house (i grew up in michigan), especially during the winter months, we used to serve my mother's cincinatti style chili on a scoop of yellow rice with cheddar cheese on top. it's delicious! don't knock it 'til ya try it. i've altered the recipe over the years as i've become a bigger fan of spicy food, but i always use a healthy portion of brown sugar and a few pinches of cinnamon just like mom.
  19. some friends of mine who attended the grand opening last night said that it was packed and that the food was good (there was a buffet of sorts). however, it is also worth mentioning that they were drunk (there was an open bar). if nothing else, it will be better than peppers!
  20. thanks for the suggestion! i tried them for lunch and i am a changed woman.
  21. Albertos on P St NW is by far the best. Be forewarned that they take about 45 minutes to deliver and the specials that are listed on the website are no longer in effect. http://www.albertospizzeria.com/
  22. i enjoyed a fabulous meal in the tasting room at eve about a month ago. highlights for me were the loup de mer (which was perfect in every way) and the wild mushroom/crispy potlena dish that a dining companion ordered. the hogs head burger was also quite good...then again, i like anything that's fried. the silton flan was so delicious that i asked for a doggy bag when i couldn't finish it. low points of the meal for me were the lamb dish that i ordered (it was overcooked) as my 3rd course and my dessert - the citrus salad thing which another poster mentions above - it was wierd all around and not what i was expecting at all. the service was impeccable and is reason enough to make me want to go back for another round.
  23. not sure if it's called giorgios, but there is still a pizza place at 20th and N, i believe - right next to what used to be the cozy corner.
