  1. Heard about this place via Tyler Cowen's blog and decided to give it a spin tonight. I was by myself unfortunately so I couldn't try as much as I wanted, but I did get to try all of these things: Plov - Pretty good. It's a big plate (for a very reasonable price) full of Beef, rice, carrots, chickpeas, and a nice pepper, all things I love. Only complaint I have about this is that about half of the beef was really dry. The other half was very good though, so maybe a little inconsistant there. Lamb Kebab - Came out pretty much perfectly the way I like my lamb. Super juicy and well spiced. Kutabi w/meat - My favorite thing I ordered actually. Really love the combination of flavors of this, and I definitely will have to get another one next time I go. I also got a Turkish Coffee (don't know why, I had already had 3 cups today), and some Baklava and Cookies & Jam to take home for dessert. All together with tax + tip it only came out to about $30, so the value here seems really darn good. Now I just need to convince some people to come out with me next time so I can try the rest of the menu.
  2. To get technical, Dogfish isn't a Microbrewery, they're a Craft Brewery. To classify as a Microbrewery, you need to produce less than 15k Barrels/year, and Dogfish is well over 75k at this point.
  3. Haven't seen it mentioned here, but I'd recommend checking out artcafé26. We stopped in here for breakfast during our trip, and we really enjoyed it. I'm kind of sad we only ended up going there once on our trip, there were a lot more items on the menu we wanted to try out. The place itself was pretty cute, lots of local(?) art on the walls, art books sitting about, lots of weird looking chairs. There were only a few other people who were in while we were, they seemed to be regulars since the staff knew them all. Staff did a very good job, nothing to complain about. I ordered a four cheese omlet (Cheddar, Havarti, Swiss, Feta), which was gigantic and very rich. I think it would probably be a good plan to split it between 2 people, as it was way too much for me to handle alone. I got a special coffee drink that was very good as well, though the drinks don't seem to be listed anywhere online that I can find. My wife got a special breakfast combo, which I believe was some slight variation on the one listed on the online menu ("Flaky Croissant w/Brie, scrambled egg, homemade jam, small Salad, coffee"). She enjoyed the whole thing of course. Worth noting that the slice of Brie that came with it was pretty significantly large as well. We got a few cookies to go as well, and were certainly glad we did. We also managed to squeeze into the Fat Canary (with a reservation made earlier in the day no less). Happy to report that it was even better than advertised here. I ended up ordering the stuffed quail, and boy was that the right choice. The service was just as spectacular as the food as well. Don't miss out on this place when you visit.
  4. Website has been updated, and they've announced that their soft opening date is the 6th of July. Menu looks really promising, they even have Ramen. I'll probably stop in the week after to check it out.
  5. This is probably the Bakudan Ramen, I had it a few months ago when it was a weekend special. It's definitely my favorite of all of their styles, so I'll be very happy if it becomes a regular thing.
  6. If you follow the parking lot north, past the liquor store and patio furniture place, there's another whole lot there. We stopped in on Friday at around 8pm and there was nobody parked there at all, so it seems like a fairly safe bet if you hate fighting for a parking space like I do.
  7. I hate to only post bad news, but apparently they got a "Stop Work Order" last week. http://pqinsider.blogspot.com/2012/02/more-trouble-for-daikaya.html I can't find any more info on what happened, seems like really bad news for Ramen fans though. :/
  8. Voting funniest. Don't think these were posted yet, a bunch of other small photos from the place: http://www.thayeravenue.com/2012/02/18/piratz-now-corporate-hipsters-make-t-shirts/ There's a lot of backlash going on, from the owners, and from old regulars. Apparently a fair number of people still showing up in costume, including the host wearing a pirate hat. Haven't managed to find any reviews of the quality of food/drink yet though. Should be entertaining to see how this place turns out, to say the least.
  9. http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/youngandhungry/2012/02/07/daikaya-watch-is-an-early-summer-opening-really-feasible/ Latest news on the place is not good, they haven't even started construction yet. Early Summer sounds like a pipe dream to me based on my knowledge of how construction goes.
  10. Stopped by the Urbana location tonight, they've got neon signs up and everything so it's hard to miss. The parking lot was actually really packed so I had to hunt for a space. Ordered the Beef Brisket, 1/4 Chicken, and sides of BBQ Beans and the Pinto Beans & Rice. Enjoyed all of them quite a lot, definitely much better than Red Hot & Blue. Wish I could go into more detail, but I'm not much of a BBQ afficionado so I'll have to leave it at that. The beer selection wasn't bad either. On Tap they had Gordon Biersch Marzen, Lancaster Hop Hog, and of course Blue Moon. The bottle selection had Fat Tire, Breckenridge's Vanilla Porter, assorted cans from Oscar Blues (but no Ten Fidy!), a few Flying Dogs, and a few other random choices. It's not a bad selection, but I'd rather have Ten Fidy over any other Oscar Blues, and rather have anything that isn't Fat Tire from New Belgium. Pretty nice place, I'll definitely go back to try out some of their other meats. It's very conveniently located on my way home from work too.
  11. You're right, I was confused because if you look at their Google Maps for the Urbana location, there's a marker off to the left that's pointing at something totally different. But if you click it, comes up as 3325 Worthington Blvd. I guess they mucked up something when they setup their map. Regardless, I just gave them a call and they are in fact open. I'll probably stop in tomorrow to give it a try.
  12. The website seems a little confused, the location on their Google Maps for it says it's at 3325 Worthington Blvd Ijamsville, MD 21754 ... but that's definitely not right. It's in the Urbana Village Center at the intersection of 355 and 80: http://www.jbgr.com/images/inner/properties/UrbanaVillageCenter.pdf I didn't see a sign for it under the banner so it might just not be open yet. It's vaguely on my way home from work so I'll swing by on Wednesday and see what the deal is.
  13. I work right near here and used to go all the time. Unfortunately, over the last year it seems like they'd been pulling some of our favorite items off the menu, so we're finding less and less reason to go. No more Currywurst, such a shame. Fortunately, the Mac & Cheese Bites still seem to be around, so thank god for that. I do really enjoy their bread pudding and S'Mores desserts, probably my favorite thing to eat here. As I am somewhat of a beer aficionado, I can say that the beer here is generally pretty good. Better quality than Dogfish overall, if a bit less reliable (they are constantly rotating out what they have in). They've also made one of the few sours I've enjoyed, as I'm generally not a big fan of the style. It's also almost never crowded here, unlike Dogfish, which is a huge bonus in my mind. Also, last time I checked you could still get growlers, they're even still listed on the website for what that's worth. I know a few times when I've been in there, they've been out of them. So that could be an issue here and there.
  14. It's still on the take-out menu and on their website so most likely they still have it. There are a fair number of beef dishes on the menu, I believe I enjoyed the Spicy Thin Rice Noodles with Minced Beef when I had it. The Sliced Beef & Vegetables in Fiery Soup wasn't bad either. I'm eyeballing the Pickled Chili with Shredded Beef right now, might have to make a trip out here on Thursday at this rate ...
  15. Finally got to stop in here last night. The place was completely empty when we got there around 7:30, though a few other groups showed up shortly after we did. The place itself is pretty nice, lots of space, and they have some interesting art on the walls. The beer selection is a little sparse at the moment. They've got Magic Hat #9 and Peroni on tap, neither of which inspires any excitement in me. They had a few others in bottles though, including the Dogfish Nut Brown, which is solid enough. They could definitely stand to beef up the selection a bit here, and maybe swap some more exciting stuff into the taps. As for the pizza, we ended up getting 4 different ones. I got the Carne, which I ended up being a little disappointed with as it was pretty greasy and floppy in the middle. The flavor was quite good though, and I really enjoyed the crust on it. Later I also tried a white 4-cheese pizza (the Quattro I think it was), which I thought was VERY good. I love ricotta on my pizza, and I would definitely get this one again next time I go. Or maybe the Jonny instead ... The prices are quite good too, and compared to Matchbox you're getting a slightly larger pizza (11" vs 10") for about 2-3$ less on average. You also won't have to wait an hour for a table at dinner time.
  16. Well, the photos of the pizza on the facebook page look pretty damn good at least. I might stop in early next week for dinner, hopefully it won't be too swamped.
  17. Thanks for the welcome all. October is a busy month for me already though so I doubt I'll be able to make it to the picnic. I missed the cornbread too, guess I better make an emergency trip here on Monday.
  18. I went here right after it opened and they didn't have this one on the menu yet. I ordered the regular fried chicken (which was very good) but kept thinking to myself, "I wish they had a spicy version". Guess I better go back and see how it is! Now if someone can just convince them to serve the chicken with some waffles ... Yeah this was my biggest disappointment too. I'm a big beer person and the selection was pretty small and had a few boring choices on it too, as I recall. I'd love to see them get some more interesting stuff on bottle and on tap, they had a lot more stuff at The Classics when I went there and I was expecting something more like that.
