  1. If you thought the Stockton video was interesting take a look at this video about Dennis Rodman, much of which is dominated by conversation by people who played with and against him. A little more than half way in it shows Rodman playing defense on the perimeter against Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and James Worthy. Hmmm. The game is very different now. The physical element has been eliminated. Oooh. James Harden wouldn't have scored 30+ in every game back in that day. Anyway....a discussion about Rodman....
  2. Okay and then there is the other side of the story, AKA how to blow about $60/person on remarkably mediocre food and drink. We sort of overate as you can get out of there for much much less...heck its a moderate priced chain. so still working my way through a large CF gift card a friend and I had dinner and drinks there the other night. We had some drinks, 2 mains, bread(that was reasonably good) cheesecake and after dinner drinks. I have Minimal CF experience-my friend hadn't been there in forever. My gut is we ordered poorly off of that incredibly large menu. Neither dish was good, one Mexican themed, one chicken pasta themed. The cheesecake wasn't really good. The wine was mediocre. I thought the coffee was fine. pfft. I've discovered I'll still go back. I suppose one has to hunt peck and take recommendations for what is better/acceptable on that menu.
  3. That is a high profile social media position and one that should touch on cutting edge social media advances. If one is experienced and capable with regard to the tasks I would think it would be a great job. OTOH if one relishes dining out you may well want to pass on the opportunity. Check the hours!!
  4. To the extent that I follow the Nats closely I'll miss Harper. To (mis)quote Reggie Jackson Harper was the straw that stirred the drink. When he was hot he could carry the team. He certainly was a feared batter accumulating a bucket load of walks. His persona had a lot of energy. His "greatness" was erratic, but other than Mike Trout, there are no other Mike Trouts. Of course I'm not the owner, the GM, or the expert on salaries. It's not my money. That being said I would of paid the guy to keep him here.
  5. I like this place. I've continued to sporadically visit over the years. Nobody else here seems to visit or simply doesn't like it and doesn't want to rip it to shreds. I don't know. The owners came out of the Palm, and I always enjoyed the Palm, its food and style. Last weekend a friend and I had brunch. We both thought it quite good, brunch being the meal that evidently doesn't require great chef work...but the dishes were quite tasty. We shared a waffle dish and salmon with poached eggs over asparagus. Both were well prepared. A couple of sides, a bunch of drinks, nice quality coffee, its comfortable. Lastly considering the high turnover rate of restaurants this place has now survived 6.5 years. That at least, in a highly competitive combustible market place is a feather in their caps.
  6. Oooh. I like those ingredients. I’ll make that. Here is the recipe again with a different plating — a little more light on the end result. Every so often, I’ll walk by MeJana in the morning. If i’m Very lucky during good weather, one of the owners will be sitting with staff having a morning za’atar on their thin freshly baked warm pita bread (divine when fresh) amply sprinkled with za’atar plus coffee. I’ve been invited to sit with them. I’ve been told that is a morning breakfast tradition in Lebanon. It’s a wonderful treat. I’m partial to the ingredients above—now if only I could add that marvelous freshly baked very thin pita.
  7. I’ve continued to travel there, mostly by bus, a bit by train. The other day I had scheduled the last bus back, not knowing how long my chores would take, couldn’t reschedule and killed several hours here again on a cold and damp day. This is adequate, pleasant, with adequate or slightly above scale Irish and bar food. I expect to be in the area more often but this could be my last visit, only in that it is adequate. The shepherd’s pie (again) had an unusual abundance of mashed potatoes. The interior was of good quality. Combined with 2 Irish coffee drinks and a whiskey it kept me occupied while some poor defender and goalie miscommunicated on a pass back. That ball passed the goalie and scored a goal against. The guy next to me at the bar with a heavy Irish accent was in despair. With all that booze inside of me I didn’t know who was playing whom. On to better alternatives.
  8. With Dems controlling the House the type of legislation we will see will be different. Now whether any of this gets passed or not is another story.
  9. I suspect Sabermetric experts would have a ready answer. That isn’t me. But I did look up the all time leaders for offensive WAR (wins above replacement) and defensive WAR. The best players accumulate far more statistical WAR on offense than defense. My guess would be that the authors chose 25 homers because it is an impressive home run total on its own but also as a means to equate offensive WAR with defensive WAR. Now that is a guess as I didn’r see an explanation to your question. Calling all sabermetric knowledgeable fans for a better explanation.
  10. Would a team of Brooks Robinson’s beat a team of Eddie Murray’s???? This article poses the questions: Which team would you choose, which team would be better; a team of gold Glover’s or a team of batters that would hit 25 home runs per man per season??? I might well have voted as with the majority of the many voters via social media....but I really would have no idea. Lets turn this into an Orioles discussion and/or simply phrase it that way. Brooks Robinson is not only the quintessential golden glover, aside from a quirky pitcher holding the most gold gloves Brooks has the most for a position player. Meanwhile Eddie Murphy another great Oriole averaged about 27 home runs per season during his 13 years with the Birds. So which team of like players per position would be better?? The article surprised me.
  11. The story of the Duke star who paved the way for Zion Williamson, Gene Banks Ah, Gene Banks, I remember him. As per the story when he graduated from high school he was generally described as one of the 3 utterly outstanding high school seniors that would dominate in college and beyond. A second was Albert King, from Brooklyn, brother of the then current college (and later Pro) star, Bernard King. King went to U Maryland and later the Pro's. The third was a little known dude named Earvin Johnson, who went by the nickname of Magic. Magic became one of the all-time greats. The other two faded into obscurity and sort of mediocrity in the pros. But when they entered college the expectations were out of this world. (so much for hype). Banks played very well his freshman year and was part of a team that went to the NCAA finals, ultimately losing to Kentucky in a game featuring one of the all time great performances (by a Wildcat--not a Dukie). He might have peaked or plateaued that season. He did make all-American teams, he did get drafted in the second round of the NBA and he did play for 6 reasonably solid years....but Magic he was not. Per the article he was the first McDonald's All-American to go to Duke and since then they have had an enormous amount of them, peaking these past few years with the cream of the crop and a large number of one-and-done players. Banks is well described as a Zion Williamson forerunner. He was both athletic and dramatically strong coming out of high school...though not in any way as spectacular as Williamson. His status as a Philadelphia high school legend of the time is quite remarkable. His games suspended Philadelphia gang fights. Now that is rather amazing.
  12. LeBron is now the only player in both the top ten career totals for points and for assists I suppose at one point Oscar Robinson dominated those career aggregate lists. But many decades have generated hundreds of good players since then and huge totals for points and assists. LeBron James now is the single player in the top ten in these categories: a long skilled versatile career
  13. Oh jeez: This review makes this out to be a place for cocktails and not food. Oi. Not inviting.
  14. As it applies to apps and their applications and usage here is stunning information on the loss of privacy
  15. It absolutely is appropriate customer service, in fact it’s one of (I don’t know how many) standards taught at our school. I wonder how it is enforced or implemented at restaurants. Possibly you I or my late dear departed pooch could get a job as the staff sniffer.
  16. I would add a couple of additional points: Management: There is an acute shortage of well trained managers. Restaurants might not have the knowledge base to do a good job with training. I’ve been hearing about the shortage of mid level managers for FOH and BOH for at least 2 years. The gig economy and more particularly work such as lyft and uber. Reportedly there are over 100,000 people driving for lyft, Uber, and other services in this region. Without those jobs and opportunities more people would enter the restaurant industry. Finally of all the people that enter the industry there are only a relatively small number that treat it like a primary profession. I suppose of that number a large percentage migrate to finer restaurants but the overall percentage remains small.
  17. Over the last several months I’ve been handling the placement function for the Arlington Bar School. I deal with many employers of all types ranging from high end restaurants mentioned here all the way through the spectrum including places you may not want to send your worst enemy. One with high end standards includes a variety of grooming requirements. Limiting perfumes is one of those requirements. I wonder how restaurants would enforce that. Might there be a manager of sniffing before one gets to start their shift? On a more serious note—that is off putting.
  18. Reluctantly I’m of the same mind. Having been a fan of and followed college basketball for decades it has changed. One and done is an extension of a long term trend wherein college players stay only 1,2,or 3 seasons. As a fan I have a hard time connecting with one and done players. With players coming and going there is no longer a connection that often came with familiarity and watching players evolve and grow. It is all long gone. Zion’s injury brought me back to Kyrie Irving, who went to Duke, played about 10 games and was injured. He went into the pro’s as the #1 draft choice. He has big money in front of him and an opportunity to secure his future. Tie it down. Kyrie Irving was traded for Isaiah Thomas, whose injury possibly cost him $50-100 million. Crazy amounts of money you can’t replicate elsewhere are at risk. Shut it down Zion. Duke fans will hate it. It’s your life and your financial future.
  19. Try the bison huevos rancheros at SD. Admittedly I'm more into the whole huevos rancheros with its spicyness and meatyness of the bison, and less focused on the tortillas. Now if only I could customize the bloody mary's...hmmm
  20. Just noticed that an office tenant of some size just signed a lease to move into Rosslyn across the street where Sfoglina should be. The office will include a preponderance of people in their 20's, 30's and possibly 40's...including a heavy number of tech engineers and programmers. I assume the salaries will be pretty good. Meanwhile it appears that Sfoglina has hardly done any construction at all. I think they mapped out spaces on the floor where there should be drilling...but I don't think an ounce of heavy construction has started. Hence I'd move open date to late spring or early summer. I can't figure this one out. While working as a commercial RE agent with tenants I would "manage"/ more monitor construction to see if it was occurring on a timely basis and costs were in line with the construction budget and some other items. I never saw a tenant sign a deal and wait this much time. Oh well...its not my dime. I still think this should be a killer restaurant location for a restaurant/bar of this quality. There simply isn't any competition in this heavily populated area of office space.
