    Four games in the ever-changing Denver weather environment (plus that altitude thing) and a 3-1 record: 8-4 loss (the day after playing the ESPN Sunday night game against the Mets), 15-12 win (Turner hits for the cycle), 11-4 win, and 16-5 win (11 of the 16 runs coming in the top of the 7th). Imagine if they played at Coors field half the season...

    Yeah, Don, like them or not, hip checks for the most part are entertaining to watch. The backside-over-teakettle result is common. That being said, the overwhelming reason the players want it to be made illegal is the injury risk. As an example, do it wrong and you just gave the guy a knee injury. For the record, this is the hip check against Ovechkin (and it was clean). He came back later in the game. Here is Ovechkin dishing one out.

    The hip check against Ovechkin that was called for a tripping penalty...it was a clean hip check. That being said, there are a lot of NHL players who want to make it illegal.

    Series is tied 2-2. It's been exactly half a century since the Leafs have won their last Stanley Cup.

    Little correction: The Minnesota Wild beat the Blues in OT. The San Jose Sharks beat Edmonton in OT. (As an aside, this is Edmonton's first time in the playoffs since the 2005-2006 season, when they lost in the Stanley Cup final in 7 games to Carolina; Connor McDavid of the Oilers, this year's Art Ross Trophy winner for the most points scored in the regular season with 100, turned 9 in January 2006.). Now onto the game currently underway: Not a good start for the Capitals, but they've calmed down and it's now tied. An 8th-ranked team shouldn't be a problem on paper but they can be dangerous. I've seen a few 8 beats 1 situations. As for how they seed things these days (top three from each division plus wild cards, then they reseed the teams in the next round)...grumble. Addendum: Clearing attempt by the Leafs is knocked down by Wilson, who proceeds with a nice wrist shot on the short side to win it for the Capitals in OT. His first playoff goal. And the game is conveniently finished before Metro closes.

    Coming up tonight at 10 pm on the Food Network, a show called "Help My Yelp." Show title: Barbecue Bootcamp. Description: Restaurant consultant Monti Carlo and a group of elite Yelp reviewers help Barbecue Street. Doing an Internet search, apparently the restaurant is in Kennesaw, Ga.

    They decided not to open in that location and instead will be opening soon at 7305 Richmond Highway. The building is next door to a Shell station and has been home to several other restaurants over the years.

    Their delivery used to be in-house and with a pretty wide delivery distance, but now it is through GrubHub.

    Don, I agree that if you want to learn about the game the fastest way to do so is to watch with people who know what they're talking about. I may have taught a few people about hockey this way.... As well, it also helps a lot to be in an environment where everyone around is into it. While I watched my brothers play soccer back when we were kids, my first real live soccer experience was at Stamford Bridge, the home of Chelsea. I went on vacation to England and decided that I wanted to experience theater on the pitch instead of the stage. That being said, I had a good idea of how things worked but didn't know all of the rules, particularly offside. I was able to get a seat to a Chelsea home game for a League Cup fixture (game) against West Ham United (October 27, 2004). Since it was not an EPL fixture there were season ticket holders who gave their seats back to the club to sell, which is now I ended up with a fantastic seat in the middle of the field, 20-odd rows up. The fans around me figured out pretty fast I wasn't a local. They were more than happy to answer any of my "What just happened?" questions. The crowd was very much part of the whole experience, and I got wrapped up in it.

    Well, Clemson indeed won in a nail-biter. I think it's good for college football that Alabama didn't win.

    If nobody knows, why change right now? I bet it's more of a get-backsides-in-the-seats situation. And I give them credit for realizing they needed to change things now.

    This is a story about something happening in Montreal; if you click on this link in the Intrepid Traveler section of this fine establishment you can read about places to visit there, since it is a city filled with restaurants. Having visited there twice, I can testify. The story is about the intersection of government and the restaurant industry. While this bylaw only effects one street, it's a significant street in Montreal. The street also includes the internationally-known Joe Beef, and one of the co-owners is quoted in the story.

    Mama Lovehockey, who grew up in St. Louis, knew he was from The Hill, which is south of the St. Louis Zoo (as an aside, the STL Zoo is superior to the National Zoo).

    Glass up to Nancy Reagan as well. A couple you knew adored each other, but also a woman who publicly dealt with the near-death of her husband and then cared for him for 10 years as he succumbed to Alzheimer's.

    As I said to Bettyjoan on Friday at the Caps' game, I feel bad for him. He's near the end of his career and got traded from a team that for all intents and purposes should be in the Stanley Cup final to the worst team in the league. Furthermore, it's Toronto. Playing for any Canadian team is playing in a pressure cooker, and TO is more so because they haven't won a Stanley Cup since 1967. In addition, while he could walk around DC with a good amount of anonymity, he won't in TO. Depending on how this season ends up, Winnik hit the jackpot.
