  1. I'm going to add to my brief review above. Food is great. Location is small. If you're going at at peak times, like Friday or Saturday at primetime, make a reservation. Wine and beer lists are average and cocktails will be made with rail liquor. On the other hand, they have them. It's a family operation. We were served by the dad and the kids. They very much want to keep you happy, although when it's busy they'll be overwhelmed.
  2. Mr. Lovehockey visited Rosslyn on my recommendation last week, since I'm a fan and he's from New Jersey (he'd never been to a Wiseguy location before). He approved. For the record, on the pizza front he's also enjoyed 2Amys and Il Canale.
  3. Antonin Scalia. He was an absolute gentleman when I met him, and very gracious towards my nervous self.
  4. To start, there are multiple weather "models" that are run 3 times a day. The big boys are are the GFS (American) and Euro (three guesses). Along with them are the Canadian, the UK, and the Navy's. There are also short-term models (84 hours or less to showtime) like the NAM and the HRRR. A lot of TV stations use another model called the RPM (Rapid Precision Model). I'm sure I've forgotten a few models, but these are the well-known ones. As well, the major models will go out to 15 days or more, so when something shows up on a model in the D+10-15 range, it's best to be skeptical. D+6-9, keep your options open. Within D+5, you're feeling better. D+3, you're feeling OK. Of course, even the D+3 range models can vary, much to forecasters' frustration. To add to the fun (or confusion) the GFS and Euro run "ensembles", as in "let's somewhat change the parameters 2-3 dozen times." Those provide a lot of entertainment. For example, one may show 2 inches of snow and another 30. When I posted on Saturday morning, the GFS was showing a snowstorm this upcoming weekend, with some support from others, but the Euro wasn't on board. Between then and now, the Euro has jumped on board, albeit with different locations for the highs and lows, which can make a difference. But all of the models, long-range, are showing something for next weekend, and now the models will battle it out as to the placement of the highs and lows (ie. how much cold air will stick around for the festivities). The problem is that right now we don't know where everything will set up with respect to all rain, all snow, or a mix of everything. We probably won't know for sure until late Tuesday or Wednesday if the models keep this up. But right now all of the models are locking on to something happening next weekend, with snow featured, perhaps significantly. I remember they did this in December 2009 and February 2010 when we got dumped upon. At this point, be aware that something may happen. Could be rain, could be a lot of snow. We'll see. P.S. If you want to know the website of which I'm a member, IM me and I'll let you know.
  5. I'll clarify what I said in the first post: I've actually stayed at several other locations in the chain and they've all been good. (I'll add that the food on offer is the same all across; I've heard that the only quirk comes from the locations in Georgia, which serve Coke products instead of Pepsi everywhere else. And they all have the alcoholic beverage special.) The one in St. Louis that made the news is the Valley Park location (St. Louis Southwest), at the intersection of State 141 and I-44; the water was up to just below the nearby underpass. Having seen the Meramec River in partial-drought conditions, it was something to see the pictures of it way over its banks.
  6. I will now change my tune: Keep your eyes out for this upcoming weekend (Friday-Sunday). This far out, there's a ton of uncertainty as to what form(s) the precipitation will take, but it's looking more likely that we'll have wet weather.
  7. If you watched the coverage from the St. Louis floods most of it was at the intersection with the Drury Inn I've stayed at many times before. This chain is mid-level but offers breakfast, with things like potatoes, biscuits and gravy, sausage, a waffle iron, cereal, muffins, toast, and yogurt. There is an evening selection that will qualify as dinner if you wish (daily salad and nachos, and rotating things like chili, baked potatoes, pasta with meatballs, chicken tenders, etc.). They also have a drink ticket, which allows you beer, wine, and rail drinks. Three drinks per night per ticket (for example, 3 beers, or 3 bourbon and cokes). And from about 2-10 p.m. they have popcorn and soda (the soda, aka. pop, is available in the morning, for which I am grateful, because I don't drink coffee). If you need a pool and a (small) workout room, you're OK. If you need a place to stay for a good value, you'd do well with them.
  8. Right now, not looking great, but if it changes I'll let you know.
  9. I'm a member of a weather-oriented website, and I can trust you that this winter has been frustrating so far. That being said, if we were in a weather situation that called for staying at home for a few days, with or without the threat of the power going out, what would you be running to the store to acquire? Or are you already supplied? If it's the latter, what do you have?
  10. Mama Lovehockey does not like the "Loaf of Bread" problem. It is indeed a problem. It's when a player doesn't hold the ball close to the chest. When it isn't (held loosely), it's vulnerable to a fumble when a defensive player tackles or smacks the ball out. It happened in the FCS Championship game today with North Dakota State and Jacksonville State.
  11. Grandma. Lost in July but if you watch the Valley Park, MO flood pictures that was her home, church (Sacred Heart), and our hotel (Drury Inn, highly recommended) we stayed at when we visited. I-44 and State Highway 141.
  12. Remarkably, there are some of us who are not on Facebook! During last week's chat with Tom Sietsema someone commented that they loved his reports from various US cities and perhaps he could do a series on ethnic eats in the DC area, since the poster could use some help in that direction. My first thought was, "There's already someone to help you, and he chats online on Tuesdays."
