  1. Visited today for lunch at the bar. Got to meet Mark, who was very gracious helping out little ol' me while also taking care of a table of guests nearby. He recommended the Valpolicella Ripasso, Degani 2013, Veneto, Italy ($8.50, $34), which was a lovely red. We also chatted here and there about everything from overcooked steak horrors to opera. Had the Hangar Steak with Fries, which was a special for the day. The steak was really tender, and was flavorful enough by itself that the red wine sauce on the side was used sparingly. To start I had had the mixed greens salad, which had the right amount of a slightly sweet dressing. The 2nd floor is a very nice-looking space (and from what I saw of the 1st floor it's the same). They also have a patio in between their building and the building next door, with large trees that will provide daytime shade when the leaves finally decide to show up. It's a great addition to the Old Town area and that section of King Street. I look forward to visiting again.
  2. Nothing on Belle Haven Road that I can I think of; the closest are a bit down Fort Hunt Road on Belle View Blvd in the shopping center. Off the top of my head, it has: Baskin Robbins, Roy Rogers, Subway, Dishes of India, Brenner's Bakery, an Italian deli, and Primo Family Restaurant. UnWined Belle View is also in that shopping center.
  3. To quote Radar O'Reilly, I'm a lady of the opposite sex. I'd be happy to sample the deep-fried peanut butter. As a half-Canuck, hand over the Poutine Pizza.
  4. DarkStar, I remember reading that article (I think I have the dead tree version of it still lying around), and the photo of Clippard without his trademark specs.
  5. If you want pure playing for the game in every sport, look to Navy, Army, and Air Force. If the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine Academies don't qualify, here they are in this thread.
  6. *Stands upon soapbox* The play-ins are not the first round. Therefore Thursday and Friday were not the second round, and this weekend is not the third round. *Steps off soapbox*
  7. It's been a fantastic first day. Two major upsets. Plus the vast majority have been close games, including multiple 1-point games.
  8. dgreen is correct, and he has a good example of an only-assist. Two assists are awarded if the two of the teammates previous to the goal-scorer controlled the puck. Note that this does not include the goal-scorer. For example, if Ovechkin passed to Backstrom, and Backstrom passed back to Ovechkin, who then shot and scored a goal, Backstrom would get the only assist. But if Green passed to Backstrom who then passed to Ovechkin for the goal, then Green and Backstrom would get the assists.
  9. I think the difference for Rose vs. the steroid-era guys is that you could argue that he should be in the Hall for his time as a player. Kibbee, I understand you completely, though. There is a "These are the rules" vs. "Give him a break" issue.
  10. One of the most fascinating things about the World Juniors this past time around was that Max Domi, son of Tie Domi (a famous NHL enforcer) was one of Team Canada's finesse players. The son of the tough guy was the star his father would have protected. This tournament starts the day after Christmas. BTW, I think that one of the reasons the enforcer role has now primarily moved to part-time is because of the research into sports-related brain injuries. I'm all for making sure athletes do not suffer like that, and I think that it's much harder for someone to make it into the NHL as a primarily tough guy. But I also think it's important that a star player has the protection he needs, because otherwise he's going to get harassed or even injured. It's not an easy issue.
  11. Am I awful for thinking that since people born in the late Generation X period onward probably think he should be reinstalled, that about 20 years from now if you ask people born since about the late 80s onward they'll say stars of the steroid era should get in to the Hall?
  12. It appears that another outpost of this franchise will soon open at 6151 Richmond Highway in Alexandria, Fairfax County, in the space that used to house a restaurant called Las Vegas (which was Mexican/Salvadoran). That area of Route 1 has several hotels and also condo/apartment buildings, but the only sit-down place is a Five Guys next to the Ford dealership and quite close to this location. Otherwise, you're going to Old Town or to the quick-serve places located in Kings Crossing (where the 24-hour Wally World is located), Applebees, various other fast food/quick-serve places around or south of Kings Crossing, or down North Kings Highway. I bet it'll do well.
  13. Do not make me call my mother! BTW, that's the photo, just a different autograph, that hangs in Chez Parents. Orr was an excellent defenceman; what made him exceptional was he was confident enough to know when he could go on offense. That being said, I have no problem if someone wants to discuss whether there has been a better "pure" defenceman, and I think you have to go pre-Orr for that. Someone like Eddie Shore or Doug Harvey. If you're looking for someone modern-day to beat Orr? Perhaps Niklas Lidstrom. Perhaps. As for Langway, it's a shame he isn't appreciated enough.
  14. I've heard of Andy Bathgate too. What did you expect? I'll agree that Gretzky played in a era of wide-open offensive hockey*. And Patrick Roy's equipment near the end of his career pretty much necessitated goalie protection equipment rules re: size. *Dave Semenko was also around to beat the daylights out of anyone on the other team who sneezed in Gretzky's direction. Once Gretzky went to St. Louis it was downhill from there. Disclaimer: I'm pro-enforcer. The 1987 Canada Cup contained fantastic offensive hockey. Made Grant Fuhr look awful at times.
  15. This tournament is worth visiting, especially in the bang-for-the-buck early rounds. Sure, it's going to be hot outside. I went twice when it was the Legg Mason Tennis Classic and saw the men's singles and doubles' finals. I found the latter to be particularly entertaining. And I can say I've seen Andre Agassi play in person.
  16. In terms of defencemen, I don't think there has been another Orr for the sheer talent and dominance he had. Have there been players who have emulated him? Yes. I mentioned two above. But he was nothing that had ever been seen before. He was revolutionary. It's without argument that Gretzky's incredible talent as a forward is more than evident with the records he racked up. But he more importantly served as the catalyst to the southward expansion of the NHL with his trade to LA on August 9, 1988 (I didn't have to look up that date; as to whether the southward expansion has been effective, that's another issue). In terms of changing how the game was played, Orr stands above him. As for someone else who had an impact on the game but in a different manner? Jacques Plante, the first goalie to permanently wear a mask in 1959.
  17. I have to say that pretty much the only times I've consumed Jordan Almonds (which are highly addicting, BTW) were as party favors at weddings here and in Canada. And they were all Protestant weddings (mainly Baptist).
  18. With apologies for the lousy formatting, Don had this quote in the thread about who is the greatest men's tennis player of all time: "I read this article the other day which says that there are two athletes in American history that 'transcended and transformed' their sport: Babe Ruth and Wilt Chamberlain. I can't disagree with this - not even Gretsky had the impact those two had." The author picked the wrong hockey player. If you're looking at someone who "transcended and transformed" hockey based on offensive stats, it's Bobby Orr. He was the first offensive defenceman, and I mean "offensive" in the most positive light. As an example, without his example would Hall-of-Fame players like Paul Coffey or Ray Bourque played the way they did? (Disclaimer: I know a lot about Orr because he is my mom's favorite hockey player. Over a decade ago I bought her an autographed black-and-white 14"x20" of him flying through the air after his Stanley Cup-winning goal. Happiness is making your mom cry in a good way. BTW, his birthday is March 20.)
  19. Cat cafes are very popular in Japan. One of the Kickstarter donation incentives for this place was to have the name of someone you dislike, such as an ex, written on a litter box in permanent marker. It will be interesting to see how it does, because it will be on a reservation system and they'll charge by the hour or half hour, which will also cover beverages and food. I guess they're betting on people being willing to plan ahead so the owners/staff can control the crowd and make sure they can actually pet a cat.
