  1. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! Gotta run; I'm learning about all the planes in the movie "Planes" courtesy of my 5-year-old nephew.
  2. I have 5 signed up for next Saturday (porcupine +1, tujague +1, and goodeats).
  3. (Blame the short notice!) I have received responses via PM (people can also post here). There is still plenty of room for both Saturdays. February attendees are welcome to sign up again and bring along others.
  4. The tour guide is ready to go again! After LauraB did such an excellent job of handling signups in February, I'm going to take the reins this time. With apologies for the short notice, here are the dates she's willing to guide tours: Saturday, November 23 at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 30 at 11:00 a.m. Due to rules not made by her, the maximum number of people in a tour is 15. Priority will be given to those who were not on the tours in February. Cost: Free. Further details will be PM'd to those who sign up, but they can be found at post #52 in the link below. http://www.donrockwell.com/index.php?/topic/19023-drcom-capitol-tour-saturday-february-9th-at-11-am-and-2-pm-given-by-a-guide-who-has-done-this-for-15-years/?hl=%2Bcapitol+%2Btour
  5. In Virginia it's a special order through the ABC and from what I understand it's the best price in the country. However, the waiting list is so long they're not taking any more names. I'd be curious to find out if this robbery cut or eliminated ABC's allotment this year.
  6. I'm in the area as well. I spend plenty of quality time muttering about the North Kings Highway/Kings Crossing shopping center traffic debacle as I venture up and down Route 1 (Yay for Fort Hunt Road!).
  7. Ah yes, Boston-Vancouver, known as the game 7 which resulted in "Dirty Water" being played in the Canucks' own arena and part of the city of Vancouver to riot. As one half of a set of twin sisters, best of luck in the teenage years. Don, I hope you're doing well! I have sent a few thoughts upstairs on your behalf this past week.
  8. Dear RedRocks, If you have 4 area locations, I'd like to know their addresses. I've been looking around your website and can't find them! Individual location pages with phone numbers, photos of the outside of each location, and reservations links don't quite do the job. I'm not so lazy that I can't find them myself via other methods, but I'd like to find them out from directly from you!
  9. The SO and I visited in the early afternoon today. We'd never been before and he had heard good things about it; being a New Jersey boy, he takes his pizza seriously. We started with the potato and prosciutto croquettes: he liked them and I loved them. We split the Norcia pizza (tomato, salami, grilled peppers, fresh mozzarella, grana). He was very happy, and thought that the grilled peppers were particularly good. I enjoyed it as well. We visited Il Canale in March and he thought the 2 Amys pizza was better.
  10. The SO is home from overseas on R&R and desperately needed good steak, so off to Ray's we went on Saturday night. He was very happy with his Filet Mignon Au Poivre with a port wine reduction, cooked medium well as he likes it. Good food, wine, and service, as always.
  11. I received a wine aerator for my birthday. For lack of a better description, it's the globe kind. I've used it almost exclusively with reds, and have found it's been useful for some wines and not for others. There is one wine that I had that needed about 45 minutes of open bottle time before it was good to go and the aerator worked well to speed things up. My practice is to pour a small amount of wine and taste it, then pour some more through the aerator and taste the difference. Sometimes the aerator is the way to go, and other times it isn't. I've actually had a situation where one person liked the aerated version and another preferred it without. My personal opinion is that it's not a bad thing to have.
  12. It's been years since I set foot in the place so I'm not entirely sure if it's got the correct window direction, but perhaps Ruth's Chris in Crystal City? Update: They do have windows which face the direction of the fireworks.
  13. I noticed that when the Elisir commenter of last week responded to the request for his info, it was a longish comment that also included his full name and email address. Oops! When I checked the chat a few minutes ago, I saw that his last name had been removed and his email redacted.
  14. The Costco at Route 1 and Sherwood Hall Lane in Alexandria opens next month. While I'm sure it will take some pressure off the Pentagon City Costco, between it and the WalMart next door the traffic will be terrible. (For those who are familiar with the area, for years there was a movie theater at that location.)
  15. I cannot contribute to the restaurant discussion because I've never left Pearson International Airport (in my experience, expect mediocrity if you're looking for food) but if you are a Bank of America account holder you can withdraw money from Scotiabank ATMs across Canada without surcharges or access fees (if I recall from the days when I took advantage of this, Scotiabank charges you an exchange fee).
  16. Congrats, hillvalley! I'm sure I'm one of many who wish could go with you!
  17. Earlier this evening I had the exact same dishes as J: fried calamari with chipotle remoulade and the burger (I hadn't read Zora's post until I got here this evening to write about my visit). The calamari batter was light but with a bit of heat, and it was just the right amount of calamari for one person. The burger was juicy but also with a char and flavor that made me think they had a grill out in the backyard. I had the Coopers Creek Riesling (NZ) from the selection of four happy hour wines, which was fine and a generous pour for $6. This was my first visit to BlackSalt. I don't live near there but if I did I'd probably visit quite a bit for the happy hour, which is a good value. The happy hour bar menu is available from 4-7 M-F and 4-6 on weekends.
  18. Cheezpowder, I've been to Vermilion and hope to make it to Corduroy and Willow sooner rather than later.
  19. That was the name on the menu: Cornmeal Hushpuppies. I'll admit that my Canadian upbringing left me extremely limited in my exposure to cornmeal. As well, I can count on one hand the number of times I've had hushpuppies while living in the States. That's why I didn't see anything amiss with the name when I wrote it in my original post. What KMango writes above makes a lot of sense, though.
  20. I stopped by for a late brunch today and sat at the bar. Service was friendly from the tag-team of bartenders. I had a glass of the pleasant White Hall Viognier from VA. To start I got the cornmeal hushpuppies, which come with three dipping sauces and a small side of pickles. The hushpuppies were very nice, with just the right mix of sweet and salty. My entree was the Baked Eggs - two eggs atop a spicy tomato and sausage stew, beans, basmati rice, and sliced avocado. While on paper it appeared to be a bit heavy considering the heat and humidity outside, it was actually rather light and a good combination of flavors. No dessert, alas, because I was full.
  21. I was in the area earlier today and swung by to see if it was open. There are no hours listed on the temporary website and I'm not on Facebook, but the description on Opentable left open the possibility that it was.* It was not, but that wasn't too surprising since the Metroplex is pretty deserted on a Sunday. However, the main entrance to the restaurant is inside the building and there are no hours listed anywhere outside. I hope they publicize their hours soon. *For any who are asking, why didn't lovehockey just call? That would have made too much sense. Plus I wouldn't have been in Kingstowne today if I didn't need to trade my cable box in for one that functions, so taking a (turned out to be quick) side trip wasn't a huge deal since I was in the vicinity.
  22. My take was that the half star came from the service, the "generous and strong" cocktails, the pasta being removed from hot water at the right time (the subsequent salt assault notwithstanding), and the rare item that was good (he cited the dish with mozzarella, anchovy, and crushed tomatoes). Even then, from reading the review he was being generous.
