  1. And you wrote your post at halftime! I almost used some strong language myself during the first half just out of sheer shock, and during the second my comments turned into wonder (although I think Brazil got a bit more aggressive in the second half as they played for their pride). I think this match will be discussed and dissected for years to come, particularly the impact of absences on Brazil's side. But like Spain going out in the first round so decisively, a loss of this magnitude that set so many records was very much unexpected.
  2. Back when I was in university, right around final exam time, some TV station (maybe TNT?) would show Bond marathons. A bunch of us on the dorm floor would gather in front of the TV, books in tow, and try to study during the commercials. One of my dormmates thought Dalton was (and last I heard, still is) the best Bond ever. Personally, I'd say Connery is the best because he was the first and set the standard. I think Moore lasted too long (I'd say more, but I'll spare everyone). Lazenby? Can't really give an opinion. Brosnan? I think he was pretty good. Craig? I thought Casino Royale was 30 minutes too long, but if you want a serious Bond he's your guy. Plus there's all the really modern technology.
  3. We visited the Alexandria location (Cooper Road, just off Route 1) on Saturday. It had been 3 years since I last visited. I had the Tipico Mexicano (some thinly-shaved but flavorful steak served with a chicken enchilada, carne asado, two chicken flautas, rice, beans, and corn tortillas - $12.99). The SO had the Chori-Changa ($10.99). It was a burrito - he chose chicken (the other option was beef) - fried and covered with homemade queso and Mexican chorizo. He reported the latter had a bit of heat. It came with rice and guacamole salad, which from what I saw is a small side of lettuce and tomato with some guacamole on top. The "skinny" margarita ($6.75 for the regular size) is a very good margarita if you're looking for something that's tart and doesn't taste like a watered-down margarita in order to save calories. He sampled mine and said he'd have gotten it if he had known it was going to be that good. He had the margarita/sangria combo and while there wasn't a whole lot of sangria, from my taste it did cut the sweetness of the margarita and he said he liked it. From what we saw, their large margaritas are huge. The complimentary chips and salsa aren't anything memorable, but the basket of chips is generous in size. For the money it's a great value.
  4. My grandma made the best peanut butter and honey sandwiches. Laid the honey on thick, as it should be. To this day I make a PB&H with creamed honey because it goes on thick (for the record, I'm not a fan of PB&J). I also remember her big candy bowl of small Snickers bars, and over the course of one visit my 3 siblings and I cleaned that thing out. I certainly played a big role. She gave us flak for that. In a few weeks I'll be visiting her with my mom. She is in the late stages of dementia and has no clue who I am.
  5. *Looks at clock* They're still playing! And I'm awake! I'll regret this! Going to the bottom of the 8th with the Nats leading 2-0.
  6. I just saw this! *So proud* Dear MLB: Just postpone the rest of tonight's game. It's 11:30 and the precipitation is training, for heaven's sake. Addendum: What do I know? They're about to start again. Meanwhile, thunder and lightning are here in Mount Vernon.
  7. I'll mention at the start that I'm a gal, so my knowledge of this subject is not quite 100%. That being said, my SO gets his hair cut at Kim's Barber Shop on N. Kings Highway in Alexandria, which is pretty much across the street from the south entrance of the Huntington Metro station. The times I've been there with him I've seen them do his neck and sideburns with a lather and blade. It's been a while since I've been there with him, which means I haven't looked at the price board lately, but I assume that they do shaves. Several older Korean ladies work there and a large chunk of their clientele are guys in the military (which is one of the reasons my SO goes there). For a haircut he pays something around $13 before tip. They even have the vacuum to clean him up after his haircut!
  8. The HR/triple + error was fielded poorly: the fielder's slide towards the ball went wrong, then a couple attempts to pick up the ball didn't go so well.
  9. I'd like to know how many other times an inside-the-park home run has been scored as a triple plus an error. In the case of Denard Span's a few minutes ago, it was a triple plus an E9. I'll be stunned if it's not in ESPN's Not Top Plays of the week. I feel bad for the Houston Astros players. Horrible attendance at the ballpark and regular 0.0 ratings on local TV.
  10. Since it's 9-2 in the top of the 8th I think it's safe to say that this Miami Marlins game is good therapy after what happened in Atlanta.
  11. It was 4-1 when I answered the phone. Some time later (still on the phone) I looked at the TV and it was 4-4. I guess I should now change the channel because they appear to do better without me.
  12. I did the same thing, but in my case I turned off the TV. In the car yesterday morning I learned that I had indeed been of little faith. I spent yesterday afternoon watching the rerun on MASN and then the 4:05 game, so I got two grand slams in one day.
  13. Now you can walk between the Capitol Visitors Center and the Jefferson Building via tunnel.
  14. With apologies for the short notice... The Capitol Dome restoration is getting underway: Very soon the Dome will be scaffolded a la the Washington Monument as part of an effort to repair over 1000 cracks and other problems and keep it looking good for years to come. The scaffolding will cover the entire Dome with exception of the statue of Freedom. This project is expected to take two years. On the inside a canopy will be installed in the Rotunda. Click here to see what the 1999 edition looked like. The canopy will start going up on Saturday, April 12. Preparations to protect the artwork and statues in the Rotunda will begin later this week. That being said, if you'd like take a Capitol tour to see the Rotunda pre-doughnut (aka. canopy), among other parts of the building, you can do so on Saturday, April 5 at 11:00 a.m. The tour maximum is 15. If there is enough interest an afternoon tour will be added. Details about stuff such as what not to bring will be PMd to those who sign up. If you have any questions, PM me. If you want to sign up, just respond to this post. Finally: It's free! Well, your taxes have paid for it...
  15. Great time. I shared a table with the delightful beachgirl54 and an equally delightful friend of hers, and I was also able to meet other Rockwellians and connect names to faces. Seb and his siblings graciously let each table sample everything that was on the menu. In particular, I enjoyed the eggplants and the sea bass. It was my first visit there and I'll definitely be back.
  16. For the time, here's the answer. Zora, I signed up via this thread too (as someone who is not on Facebook). I'm confident that everyone who did will be fine.
  17. It's been over a year since I contributed to the Fontaine Caffe and Creperie thread, but I consider it to be a good spot for dinner or brunch. In the same empire, have you tried Eve's Lickety Split lunch?
  18. If you can, visit him on Saturday at UnWined on King (it's not far off the King and 395 interchange). The tasting at Belle View this evening included not just tastes from each bottle, but additions such as fruit and soda and light food pairings. And he really knows his stuff. Having never tasted vermouth before (yes, it's true), I learned that I like it!
  19. Just returned from a quick trip to Montreal. While porcupine recommended RestoMontreal's website in 2011 I'll second it today. It is a great resource, particularly the "Open on Mondays" option. Our finer-dining choice was Bar & Boeuf (http://www.baretboeuf.com), located at 500 McGill near Victoria Square. It is a place where you can find people in suits and dresses and people in more casual dress. The space itself is nice and airy. The SO had the French Onion Soup, which he enjoyed, and the Filet Mignon. While it was cooked much more on the medium side of his desired medium well, he said that it was tender. It came with a side of small potatoes and onions. I had the bass with mixed vegetables. The bass was cooked in a white butter sauce, and if you like butter as I do, it'll be your lucky day. I have to say that I didn't expect the side of "mixed vegetables" to be potatoes, Brussels sprouts, kale, carrots, and some sort of fancy mushrooms (sorry, I'm not a mushroom aficionado). The veggies came seasoned with more butter and flakes of salt, which made them very tasty. Those flakes of salt were also served in a dish alongside butter when the bread was served earlier. He loved his glass of Bourgogne, Pinot Noir, Franí§ois Mikulski 2012, and being a fan of Malbourough Sauvignon Blancs I was happy with my glass of Spy Valley 2013. Alas, we had no room for dessert.
  20. Forgetting that it was Chinese New Year, we visited on Saturday night. The place was swamped, busier than we'd ever seen it. Service suffered a bit as a result. Many ducks were being carved tableside, though. That being said, the food was exactly as we have had it before. They are consistent and therefore reliable. I stand by my earlier statement that it is the best Chinese food on this strip of Route 1.
  21. Larry D. Mann died yesterday at 91. I didn't know he was Canadian. He had a number of other credits besides Rudolph. Wikipedia Entry for Larry D. Mann Larry D. Mann, imdb.com "Rudolph Voice Actor Larry D. Mann Dies" on cbsnews.com "Rudolph Voice Actor Larry D. Mann Dies" on usatoday.com ""˜Rudolph' Voice Actor Larry D. Mann Dies at 91" on abcnews.com
