  1. I'll say two things: 1) I agree that the ordering/waiting/whatever situation is screwed up; and 2) The House is out of session this week, which may account for today's overflow (disclaimer: this does not excuse the problem with #1).
  2. TSN (the Canadian equivalent of ESPN) hired former NHL referee Kerry Fraser several years back to write a column titled "C'mon, Ref!" He answers questions about the rules and why referees called plays they way they did. He also tells the occasional story. If you like to watch NHL hockey, he definitely gives a different perspective on the proceedings.
  3. Sit in section 403 or 404 while you can to watch the dismantling of the Display Ship Barry.
  4. I remember watching this as a kid: Wayne Gretzky visiting Vladislav Tretyak in 1983. Tretyak would have been one of the best NHL goalies of all time if he had played here. If you watch the video all the way through, there is a blonde gal named Vicki who is seen and mentioned. She was Wayne's GF for a while, but he ended up marrying Janet Jones (to the chagrin of Oilers fans everywhere, who largely blame her for his trade to LA). Vicki's brother Joey has Down Syndrome, and right around the time this video was shot Wayne got a job for Joey in the Oilers' locker room. To this day Joey works there and in the Edmonton Eskimos' locker room (before hockey season starts). Joey is a celebrity in Edmonton and was just elected to the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. In the video, Tretyak says if he had the chance (and his teammates had the chance) he (and they) would have played for the Montreal Canadiens. He eventually worked as a goalie coach for the Blackhawks. He is now the head honcho for the Russian Ice Hockey Federation.
  5. My prepare-for-snow-forget-the-grocery-store method is to get advance takeout or delivery from Thai Nakorn (I know when the snow is coming so I prepare in advance). Two entrees and an appetizer just for me equals 4-5 meals. It's reliable. The non-spicy entrees are going to be just that, and if you really want spice you'll need to emphasize your request. But I'm glad to support a local place.
  6. This place is located on Route 1 south of the WalMart and Costco. If you pass the Goodwill going southbound, or the Costco going northbound, you've gone too far. It's a hole-in-the-wall diner, but it's cheap with big portions and the coffee keeps coming (although the can of Diet Coke will cost $2.25; I needed it). Today I got 2 scrambled eggs (they looked like they were more than 2), 4 slices of bacon, real home fries, and 2 large pancakes for $8.99 plus tax. I'm going to get 3 meals out of it. The eggs and potatoes needed some salt, but not a big deal. Breakfast is served all day and the rest of the menu includes burgers, fried shrimp, and a whole lot else. I could go to Denny's for the unlimited Diet Coke, but Elsie's is very much local and worth patronizing. And I could probably cut back on the Diet Coke...
  7. Fighting is another subject, but I think Cherry is there as long as he wants to be there. Love him or hate him, he's an institution. He's also a big supporter of the Canadian military, which I appreciate. And I think that Ron MacLean has a job as long as Grapes is there to require a sidekick. You can't have one without the other. The suits are also really something...
  8. If you can tell from my posting name, I love hockey. Heck, I'm alive because of hockey. To me, "hockey" refers to the sport played on ice. You put the disclaimer on the other forms, like street hockey, floor hockey, and the like. I'm a bit of a purist that way. But if you want to talk rules or history, I can talk those subjects with you.
  9. I sat in Olympic Stadium for the 2001 Grey Cup (aka. the Canadian Football League championship). It's a concrete jungle. I can understand why baseball failed there, because of the location, the concrete jungle, and the strike. The Alouettes (CFL) used to play there and they made a smart move to the much smaller McGill University stadium. Olympic Stadium was paid off 30 years after the '76 Olympics, which was why it is referred to as "Big Owe". They pretty much keep it around because it cost so much and it can host large events.
  10. At least this game is ending with the nation wondering about the play-calling vs. how the refs and the review booth called the plays.
  11. Wayne Gretzky's 50 goals in 39 games in 1981. Goals 46-50 were scored in one game against the Philadelphia Flyers. The 50th was an empty-netter. And since Don mentioned Bobby Orr earlier, one NHL record that will never be shattered is Orr's plus-minus, at +124 in the 1970/71 season. Basically speaking, plus-minus is an individual player's goal differential: how many times he was on the ice for a goal vs. the number of times he was on the ice for an opponent's goal. The plus-minus award was given between the 1982/83 and 2007/08 seasons. In that timeframe, the best number was by some guy named Gretzky at +98 in the 1984-85 season. He won three plus-minus trophies (he also won one before the award was created). Besides his +124, Orr has the record for winning the best plus-minus 6 times, but they were all before the award was established because he had to retire due to knee injuries. BTW, Orr's "flying goal" to win the Stanley Cup was in the 69/70 season.
  12. The northbound camera is back to temporarily slow drivers down.
  13. Schneiders has this Tannat on its website.
  14. As for the section of the airport that is post-U.S. customs, don't expect much. Starbucks, expensive Burger King, a locally-themed restaurant, and a sit-down restaurant called Houston's Steaks and Ribs which exists elsewhere (I know this because it's in Edmonton's domestic terminal).
  15. On I-295 at the Naval Research Lab, drivers have been pretty much trained to slow down (northbound just before the exit, southbound after the exit), because of the presence of cameras for the past couple years. Unless things have changed since I last drove on 295 before I went on vacation, northbound's camera isn't even there anymore and people still slow down. The southbound camera is there. Otherwise, I-295 is a motor speedway unless you get a speed-limit aficionado driving in the left lane.
  16. Just voted for the 18th for myself and a +1. I'm a fan of starting on the earlier side, like 6 or 6:30.
  17. Perhaps this thread? If he didn't bring in the ratings, he wouldn't be all over the network.
  18. Temporarily closed due to a medical emergency, according to a sign on the door. They expect to reopen sometime in January and in the interim recommend visiting Duck Chang's, which is their sister (or really is it their mother?) restaurant.
  19. I have to say I scramble my eggs. What works well too? Fry bacon, set it aside to be added later. Throw rice noodles into the pan. Make Pad See Ew.
  20. Congrats to you and the new Co-Mayor of Springfield Dining!
  21. In the other-than-equipment department, how about a gift certificate to a place like the Spice and Tea Exchange in Alexandria?
