lperry
Twenty people voted, so that's the minimum number who were both interested and date constrained. It was a matter of finding someone to secure the site. We're about 50/50 for being here both the 15th and 29th, so I didn't want to commit and then have to scramble to find someone else to open and close. Ilaine, if you are willing to do it, that would be wonderful.
Ilaine
Done. I chose June 15, 2014, because I hope the temperature will be cooler than on the 29th. I have no idea who is or isn't able to make it then, sorry to anybody who can't make it, but the earlier in the late spring/early summer in Virginia, the better, in my opinion. Good news, next time I will be able to use the senior discount. Once you turn 62, you can buy a lifetime Golden Years pass. Without the discount, this year the reservation costs $115. We will bring our Weber grill and we will grill vegetables - eggplant, bell peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, Portabella mushrooms, asparagus, Vidalia onions. People can also grill meats on it if they want to. The Weber has a propane starter but burns charcoal. We use hardwood charcoal. We will also bring one case of plain bottled water and one case of San Pelligrino mineral water. Also beer and wine.

Ilaine
Bettyjoan, we have the space from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. I think usually people get there around noonish, but ya'll can come earlier if you need prep time for something-or-other. It usually takes a crowbar to get my husband up early on Sunday, but since we'll be helping to host, and grilling, probably get there earlier. Who's got the plates, cups, eatware, serveware? bettyjoan
I can't remember - are dogs on leashes allowed at the park? How long we can stay largely depends if the pup can come with us. Of course, we would keep him away from the food, and we certainly won't bring him if folks are opposed - just figured I'd ask.

Of course, we would keep him away from the food, and we certainly won't bring him if folks are opposed - just figured I'd ask. I don't think anyone would be opposed to a friendly pup on a leash; it's just a matter of park regulations. A quick Google implies that there might be separate dog parks there, but I'm not sure. Anyone? I would hate to see you limit your time because of this.
lperry
I found the following in a list of regulations: 2.15 Pets. All pets must be restrained on a leash which shall not exceed six feet or otherwisephysically confine a pet at all times. An "invisible" electronic leash is not consideredrestraint by the GWMP. Visitors with pets in the GWMP are required to remove and dispose of their pets'excrement by placing it in a refuse can or carrying it out of the GWMP. Pets are prohibited from entering the Potomac River from within GWMP managed areas. (It sounds like it would be OK.)
DanielK
Um, I hope you reserved C-2, and not C-1. C-1 doesn't have a pavilion. But I'm out anyway - that's the first weekend right after school ends, so the one week I can get away on vacation with the kids before summer schedules kick in. Have fun! Ilaine
Oh, dang. Sorry, I made a mistake. C-2 isn't available either weekend. I cancelled the reservation for C-1. C-2 IS availabe July 5, which is probably a horrible day to schedule a picnic. Also July 13, July 20, some August dates. If anybody wants to picnic in July or August, let me know, otherwise we can start thinking about the fall picnic.
ktmoomau
I don't think July 5 is a good idea. Let's get on the ball and drum up some big support for the fall picnic???? If people wanted to do something Spring-y-Summer-y I would be happy to rent out the common room of my condo for a get together??? It's very nice, except no place to grill. I'm in Arlington and very metro-centric?
KeithA
it seems to book up pretty quickly on the coming weekends, but Rock Creek park locations are available later in the summer for $25/half day or $50 full day. Check out recreation.gov. Nice thing about Rock Creek is the central location in DC and it is still accessible by car.

thistle
I have most of the picnic stash (tablecloths, leftover plates, etc.) & I wouldn't have been able to make it to the 6/15 date (going to NC for my niece's graduation), so I'm happy that we are planning for a fall picnic. I'm anticipating a hectic summer, hopefully by fall, I will be ready to cook, & hang out w/ all you guys for a relaxing, amazing picnic.

bettyjoan
I think folks wanted to push for a really awesome fall picnic, since the dates and availability were a bit slim for summer (and lots of folks have vacations planned and/or aversion to picnic-ing in the DC summer heat). I am happy to help organize for the fall. Last year the &%@#*! government shutdown got in the way of our October 13 scheduled date. So, I'm thinking we maybe want to avoid the first two weeks of October just in case? We could do late September (for an Indian Summer/early Fall tilt) - C-2 is available Sundays 9/14, 9/21, and 9/28. Or, we could try for later October. I like the former option, but I also enjoy the heat. Thoughts?

Major events take lots and lots of planning - convention centers, for example, are often booked well over a year in advance. I'm willing to do anything I can to help - I've tried to run this in the past, but I think members prefer to run it themselves, and that's okay with me.

IIRC, to do a poll, you have to create a new thread. I, too, like the idea of a late summer/early fall picnic. And I agree with outsmarting the government shutdowners by having it before the beginning of October.

The Hersch
I agree with outsmarting the government shutdowners by having it before the beginning of October. One has to think that surely the Republicans wouldn't be nihilistic, destructive, and stupid enough to shut down the government right before the 2014 election, thereby probably kissing their chances of taking control of the Senate goodbye. But then one thinks back on the last 20 years, and one shakes one's head, and one sighs.

Ilaine
OK, I just took the bull by the horns and did it. C-2 reserved for 9/28/14. I learned this from Daniel K, if you plan it, they will come. No date is ever going to be perfect, but don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good enough. If y'all want to take a poll and pick another date and somebody else reserves it, no skin off my nose, I can cancel for ten bucks, but at least we have the 28th. Right now, every Sunday in September is still available, but step lively if you want to go another date.
