  1. I think you mean Iron Rooster. I've heard good things about it, too, but haven't been.
  2. Level is good for small plates and cocktails, and I believe you can make a reservation. Vin 909 is great but always mobbed and they don't take reservations. I haven't been to either, but others on this board have spoken very highly of Preserve and Grapes Wine Cellar. I feel like I've heard good things about Galway Bay, but I've never been there.
  3. That's too bad, not that I was particularly interested in either iteration of this restaurant. Maybe something more interesting will take over this space! -- the eternal optimist
  4. Can anyone recommend a place for a good burger in or near Columbia tonight? I'd prefer someplace with waiter service. My husband vetoed Victoria Gastro Pub because he doesn't want to drink beer today and he knows he'll be tempted there. We'll be with my almost 4-year-old and my father-in-law who has dementia, so we're looking for somewhere casual. Thanks in advance!
  5. It was an Il Radicchio for awhile. I don't remember Vivo. ETA: I still have no recollection of Vivo despite living a block away when it was open, but according to the intertubes it was in fact in that space, probably between Il Radicchio and Komi. That goat was life changing for me. I hadn't eaten much goat up until then. I still fantasize about that goat.
  6. I just made a reservation to celebrate a friend's 40th birthday. I haven't been in 10+ years. I want to say I went in maybe 2005, before they had a set menu. I lived a block away for 13 years so will be revisiting old stomping grounds as well. I'm very excited!
  7. I did the Giant Buddha as a day trip from Chengdu a million years ago (in 1993) and thought it was well worth it, even despite transportation issues caused by being a poor student at the time.
  8. I'm pretty sure I bought some of this at Costco for $10, possibly less on sale.
  9. I was wondering if there were other dr.com people there last night! Luckily we were able to sit in the dining room without a reservation, but we did get there early. And our meal also had a leisurely pace. Not that we cared because we wanted to savor the experience!
  10. I went last night with my husband and almost 4-year-old. I thought I'd have the prime rib, which I love and is a special on Sundays, but I ended up getting the hanger steak, which was delicious as always. When we arrived around 5:30pm it was busier than I was expecting, and when we left around 7:15pm it was mobbed. Our waitress said she'd only been working there about 4 weeks, which makes me wonder whether the closure was not something the owners saw coming.
  11. Sorry to change the subject, but how is Dooby's? There's a thread here, but there's only one comment from 2014. I almost had lunch there last weekend before a visit to the Walters, but I somehow ended up at Mick O'Shea's (which had surprisingly yummy nachos).
  12. I'm ashamed to say I don't follow county politics very closely. Here's how the candidates for county executive come out on this issue. I'd have a hard time voting for someone only based on this issue, but I'd certainly consider it in my overall assessment.
  13. I assumed it was the Sietsema review. My friend asked if I wanted to go and suggested the first two Tuesdays in March. This was the day before the Sietsema review ran. I took a couple of days to get back to her, and when we looked for a reservation on those Tuesdays they only had very late reservations available. She said when she e-mailed me before the Sietsema review they had 7pm reservations available on those days. We ended up making a reservation for the third Thursday in March at 7:30pm. There was very little availability at that point.
  14. Nooooo! This is one of my family's Silver Spring standbys. Too sad. We'll definitely be in for a final dinner, probably this Sunday so I can have prime rib. Interesting that some of the Source of the Spring comments mention Urban Butcher as instrumental to The Classics' demise. Even though they both serve steak I view them as very different restaurants. I've been to The Classics many times since moving to Silver Spring (and even a couple of times before moving), but I've only been to Urban Butcher a couple of times (and my husband LOVES steak). I guess it depends on how you order, but I find Urban Butcher to be way more expensive than The Classics, and it also has a much trendier vibe. The Classics is, well, classic, with good food at reasonable prices. The set menu with the hanger steak can't be beat. I've been happy with the service at The Classics overall (although there's one waiter I didn't love). They've always been very nice to my toddler even though it's not really a kiddie restaurant. Ugh. Boo.
  15. The lines for the Porta Potties at the end of that clip ... The Redskins won the Super Bowl three times in the 80s and 90s! Many diehard Red Sox fans never saw them win the World Series in their lifetimes.
  16. A strange thing happened to me when the Red Sox finally won their first World Series since 1918 in 2004: I became less interested in the team. I'm still a fan and I'll always root for the Red Sox, but I used to watch every possible game from April to September (whenever they were on national TV or playing the Orioles), and now I really can't get too interested until the playoffs chase starts (if the Red Sox are in the mix). One of my friends called me a foulweather fan. I think something similar happened to what the author described in the Post article about Eagles fans: I was so used to being an underdog that winning has an adverse effect on me, at least in terms of my passion for the team. (Don't get me wrong -- I was VERY happy when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004, especially after the 2003 debacle.)
  17. Even I, a Patriots fan by birth, congratulate the Eagles. I never thought this would happen, but I kind of feel like we've won enough recently. And it doesn't hurt too badly to lose to a team who's never won a Super Bowl before.
  18. According to a German friend of a friend: Tastes just like European / noble crayfish. So, yes, very yummy. Louisiana crayfish is very close... And we very much welcome these mutants, seeing as the normal European crayfish have been on the IUCN red list for ages.
  19. When I ate there last fall they told us they don't serve dessert. I was with a friend who LOVES dessert and was celebrating a birthday, so she was somewhat disappointed. It never occurred to us that they wouldn't serve dessert.
  20. For lunch just now the smokiest baingan bharta I've ever eaten -- so delicious. Diverse clientele, smiling owners and staff. This place is a gem. Too bad their seating is cut by two thirds when it's too cold to sit on the patio (today it was cold inside, too!). Apparently the Brookland venture mentioned above is not going forward.
  21. I was just pondering the very same thing. What's the point of him reviewing this place? I don't see many food aficionados rushing there to eat the sizzle plates (and certainly not the pho). People who aren't discriminating about food will probably think it's fine. So what does this review accomplish?
  22. I don't think they'll need to clear immigration or customs.
