  1. I enjoyed my visit to Hofbräuhaus a few years ago and I don't even drink beer. I recall a fun atmosphere in mix of tourists and locals. The Viktualienmarkt is very close by, and the impressive Peterskirche is between Hofbräuhaus and the Viktualienmarkt if you want to pop in.
  2. Maybe Montgomery Parks only allows bottles of 2015 H&M Hoffer Grüner Veltliner?
  3. Could they mean liter bottles? Not that wine is usually sold by the liter, but ...
  4. Agreed; great article. I also liked that the caption on the family photo pointed out that he was the one looking at the food.
  5. I'm also looking forward to checking them out when they reopen. We moved to Silver Spring not too long before the fire, and we tried to go to Quarry House in their Piratz Tavern incarnation, but they didn't have highchairs, and my daughter was too little then for a booster seat. Now she can sit in a regular chair and I want some greasy bar food!
  6. Duke is like the Yankees of college basketball. I know that's not a great analogy given the differences between college basketball and the MLB, but ... still.
  7. Once again surprised to see Plume on the list.
  8. I definitely liked the first half better than the second half, but I didn't love it. *** "GET OUT" SPOILER ALERT *** The second half started to feel like the latter part of "Django Unchained," a film I enjoyed overall but also found to be cartoonishly bloody.
  9. Unlike pretty much everyone I'm aware of, I didn't love "Get Out." I've had trouble articulating why. I should look for critical reviews, if any exist, to see if anyone else has articulated my criticisms for me. That said, I'm glad it was nominated for Oscars. I've only seen "Dunkirk" and "Get Out." Of those two, I'd choose "Dunkirk" for best picture, for what it's worth when choosing between only two films. I don't know much about a lot of the other nominated films, but I've heard great things about "Lady Bird" and would probably most like to see that of the remaining Best Picture nominees. If not for the Steven Spielberg schlock treatment I've heard about in "The Post" I'd be much more interested in it.
  10. Interesting. War films are not generally my bag, but I didn't mind Dunkirk. I saw it in the theater, which may have helped, especially since I rarely get to see movies in theaters these days, so it was a bit of a special treat. I thought the film was very tense; I was stressed out the entire time and not bored. I knew nothing about the actual events upon which the film was based, so the story was fresh to me. I'd probably give it a 7.5 out of 10.
  11. Oh my goodness I never knew about those signs. :-(
  12. This is inconceivable. How could no one have noticed that something was seriously wrong at that house? As I read the article I thought the parents must have been mentally ill, but the article says there's no evidence of that. Is there no oversight over home schools? As I'm thinking more I'm realizing I know all the neighbors on my block of singe family houses except the people in one house. I see cars parked in the driveway, but I've never seen the people who live there in the 3.5 years I've lived in my house. So I guess something horrifying could be going on in that house and I'd have no idea. Anyway ... highly disturbing. I like Don's advice above.
  13. I was surprised to read all the praise of Popeyes biscuits earlier in the thread. I don't love them (and I love biscuits generally). I find them dense, dry, and chalky, and they have an odd margarine-like taste. Maybe the recipe has changed since those prior posts.
  14. More Ice Cream reminded me of Simple Pleasures Ice Cafe in Bowie, in case that's easier for you to get to. Also not quite what you're looking for, I think, but something. I went once when I lived in Anne Arundel County and enjoyed my ice cream, but it's been too long now to remember details. If you're ever in Ocean City I think Dumser's Dairyland is exactly what you're looking for.
  15. Thank you for this! I suspect I'll visit the Crayola Factory some day with my daughter, and I'll be excited to enjoy some culinary delights as part of the trip!
  16. Funny, I was just reminiscing (that may not be the right word) with a friend about how often we ate this growing up. We called it American chop suey. :-)
  17. Funny, I dined here for the first time recently as well and have been meaning to post about it. I don't live nearby, but I'd been aware of it for awhile and had heard good things. I had a friend staying nearby so suggested it for dinner on a frigid night. I agree with @funkyfood's description. I had the grilled octopus, the fettuccine alla bolognese, and the key lime pie, which was a special the night we were there. I enjoyed everything. My husband and my friend enjoyed their food as well. I took a chance bringing my 3-year-old along. She's usually pretty good in restaurants but not always, and of course on this night she was a bit difficult (I was just imagining the forthcoming Yelp reviews). Our waiter was very nice about it and engaged directly with her at least a couple of times. I always especially appreciate this in restaurants that don't see a lot of very young customers. I figure the waiters at our usual haunts in Silver Spring are more used to dealing with toddling diners. :-)
  18. I like dipping my scrambled eggs in a bit of ketchup! It reminds me of something I ate a ton of when I spent 6 months in China: Chinese Stir-fried Eggs and Tomatoes.
  19. I haven't been in a few years, but I've enjoyed both Christopher's and Lure's (mentioned above)! (I haven't been to the other places mentioned.)
  20. I think that's right at least for Burma and Kanlaya (I can't remember when Urfa opened). Burma was on the second floor and Kanlaya at ground level (not sure if they were in the same building or neighboring buildings).
  21. These days I'm quite happy with my cellphone (LG G5) camera for food photos, and my cellphone is a couple of years old at this point. Cellphone cameras have improved a LOT in recent years. Low light is still an issue but would be even with my regular camera (a Canon 5D Mark II) unless I used a flash, which I prefer to avoid, or a tripod. There's no way I'd take photos during a meal at a restaurant with my hulking, intrusive Canon (which I love for other purposes). Here's a photo from last summer at Mirabelle that I took with my cellphone camera:
