  1. Blast...beaten out by mere moments! Yeah, the lobster burger deserves consideration. Hear good things about the tuna burger, too. Palena burger, certainly! At the risk of being run out of town: Lindy's. Southwestern Burger I know, I know... Speculative or Theoretical Awards: Breadline, Galileo.
  2. Half price wine by the glass until 7, and $5 highballs until closing.
  3. dee, dee, dee, Dijonnaise....
  4. Finally got over there for a hot dog. Homemade hot dog, homemade saurkraut, homemade condiments: how can you go wrong? You can't, man. You can not.
  5. I'm not sure if the part of the Crystal City strip where Oyamel is located counts as a strip mall, but this seems a good a thread as any* to mention that the Thai place there, Neramitra, is now open. I got takeout there Sunday night, and was rewarded with the best Panang curry I've ever had! I should have given them the benifit of the doubt: I ordered it 'extra spicy', as I tend to, since regular spicyness in Panang curry isn't typically satisfyingly spicy, and most of the 'extra spicy' interpretations I've seen are only a step or so above Gringo Heat. Not so Neramitra! The curry exploded with both heat and flavor! 'Extra Spicy' proved unnessesary, given what the default must have been, and likely ill-advised. It was almost TOO hot, to the point of overpowering the flavors. The curry was also quite packed full of chicken and veggies, much more so than my standard place here by the office can be sometimes. If I ever get over there for a sit-down dinner I'll put up a dedicated thread (since there will be more to discuss), but I think Neramitra might be worth a visit if you're in the area. I hope they are going to do well in that location: it was pretty empty when I was there Sunday night.
  6. A thread to discuss the glories of Pho! I'd like to kick it off with a mention of Pho that I had recently found in an unlikely place, then wrote about, and shamelessly cross-posted, right down to the emoticons. On Monday The Froggy Bottom Pub of all places has the best Pho I've yet tasted. Granted, that's not that much Pho to compare against: I haven't been to 4 Sisters yet for example, but this was good stuff, I'm sure, by any standards. Apparently they do a brisk trade (Or just don't make enough!), as they were sold out by the time I got there last week with the friend who told me about it, and this past Monday they had but one bowl left, which the friend and I split along with an order of pork egg rolls. Sounds like they have one meat, which I'm pretty sure was round eye. So, Froggy's Pho had everything going that a good bowl of Pho should, and is available all day Monday. Added bonus: fun absurdity of going at it sticks and bowls amidst a packed and somewhat rowdy house of Monday 'half price pizza and pitcher special night' -goers. Not that they have the wrong idea nessesarily: Froggy has good pizza! --- [The following posts have been split into separate threads. The posts that were split concentrate on single Pho houses; anything comparative, e.g., comparing Pho Hot with Pho 75, is left in this thread.] Pho Hot (MartyL) Pho 88 (youngfood) Pho Hong Anh (squidsdc) Pho Thang Long (jparrott) Pho Bistro (cigarnv) Saigon Bistro (squidsdc) Pho Hiep Hoa (JPW) Pho N More (Ericandblueboy) Pho Hoa Binh (ALB) Pho 75 (jparrott) Pho Capital (Sundae in the Park) Pho Tay Ho (RWBooneJr.) Pho 50 (The Delicious) Pho Sate (The Hersch) Pho An (DonRocks) Vinh Loi (NolaCaine)
  7. $5 Woodfords? No question! Though for the extra $1.50, the Bourbon and Birch had better be using Vos!
  8. Funjohnny: You forgot one of my favorites of the evening: The venison carpaccio! My other favorites of the evening included the aforementioned tempura soft shell (Who called it on the sauce? Mark it, dude). That was, in fact, my first fried soft shelled crab! My big favorite, and the one I'm going to need more of very soon was the boar sausage with bucatini. The sausage was a little spicy (I love spicy sausage, but people who don't probably wouldn't find it troublingly spicy), and very moist. Somebody really knows what they're doing with the sausage making! The bucatini was a great match: a lesser (that is, thinner) pasta simply wouldn't have done it. 9. Anybody going to Galileo grill today? I think I can finally sneak out and get over there.
  10. Anybody want to do Circle Bistro this Friday for Happy Hour?
  11. Define 'before'. Alright alright...put me on the waiting list.
  12. I'm not willing to walk all the way to Chipotle, but I'll give The Well Dressed Burrito a shot.
  13. I'll more than likely be there. There's an off chance I'm moving that weekend. You're right, I SHOULD have more of an idea at this point of when I'm moving, and where exactly I'm going. I'll probably be there.
  14. I like-a the Jamba Juice. The Jamba Juice is good. I go through Jamba Juice phases. I loved it freshman year at school, where we had one on campus. Then forgot about it for a while, then realized it would be a good lunch replacement when I was working part time at the library and didn't get much of a break. They seem pretty healthy, though I've never sought out the numbers (But you're right, they probably have at least their share of sugar). I just always wondered at the kids who said "Hey! Smoothies are healthy!" and drank them instead of soda with their Taco Bell or pizza and thought they were doing themselves a favour. My personal favorites are any of the strawberry-based drinks (Strawberries Wild!), the Mango A-Go-Go, and the raspberry one. Also, the Coldbuster was always an 'eh, it can't hurt...' when I was sick. Their seasonally-themed stuff is usually pretty good, too.
  15. GW students, including some good friends of mine, absolutely swear by Chipotle. Personally, I don't see it. It's alright...not great, but alright. I don't think it's worth the walk from campus: it takes me about 10 minutes one way, and I move quickly. It's the one over by Camelot. At that point, I'm passing The Burro and Baja Fresh, and then probably a dozen more qualified non-burrito lunch options. Hypothetically, of course...I never make that trip. I'd rather go to The Burro. There is a Chipotle across from Oyamel that I sometimes go to when I'm hung over (Obvously, that's a hangover that meets certain parameters to be motivated to walk over there). I guess that's not an all-together bad endorsement. "Chipotle: It's Sometimes Attractive Enough For Me To Forego Spaghetti-Os And Goldfish When I'm Really Hung Over". Even though I know my stomache is going to explode You can do a lot worse. I just don't see the big deal.
  16. Ah, just curious. Still works for me!
  17. Alright, what's the plan. Mendocino? Do they have a HH deal?
  18. This just in: The Bureau of Printing and Engraving announced today that the new 2005 nickel with the larger portrait of Jefferson on the front and a bison on the flip side have been printed with an error. These misprints are already selling for thousands of dollars on eBay, and are only expected to appreciate in value in the future.
  19. Sure, I'd like to see Bistrot du Coin put into the after-work happy hour rotation. Seemed like a cool enough enough place the one time I was there.
  20. As in no lobster burgers on the terrace, or no lobster burgers anymore at all? (At least until next year, presumably)
