  1. The marinated hamachi appetizer tickles my soul and makes me shed a tear of joy that will hopefully return to the oceans to let the rest of the yellowtails know that they are loved.
  2. I definitely had a nice, clean, fairly deep diagonal cut of about a half a millimeter across the inside of my left thumb courtesy of some careless santoku knife cutting. I've since learned to respect that knife and it respects me.
  3. Okay, that's what I figured you meant, but for some reason the imagery of "tastefully done" coffee service cracked me up because it's hard for me to picture coffee service, even at the Mel's Diner end of the spectrum, as particularly gauche. But thank you for your update, regardless. I wish my office was closer to Beck's for many reasons!
  4. Not to start an argument over semantics, but what exactly does 'tastefully done' coffee service entail? Unless you mean that the person serving coffee isn't some lady with acid-washed jeans, big hair, and chewing gum asking "MORE CAWFEE, HON?" Either way, I love the french press coffee, so I guess I'm going to have to bust over to Beck's for brunch soon.
  5. Tips for an enjoyable dinner at the bar at Hook Step 1: Get a flight of crudo, with two bites of your choice, but ensuring that you save a spot for the yellow-fin tuna (not necessarily the tartare) Step 2: Get the amberjack w/ saffron risotto & pistachios. Step 3: Thank Barton Seaver for making sure that the seafood is sustainable, thus ensuring many more delicious meals to come.

  7. I dunno about everyone else, but this sounds totally awesome. And I can't imagine that the combination of curry and tomato and/or ketchup is that far removed from what you find in most Indian food or even the weird Japanese takes on Western foods.
  8. I suspect that this is one of those instances where ambience and decor factor into the star rating more than the food in the case of Oyamel v. Corduroy. I agree that the food is better at Corduroy than at Oyamel, but Corduroy's dining room feels musty, bland, and like you'd find a packet of Werther's Originals in the seat cushions that a batty blue-hair left behind at some point, whereas, Oyamel's vibrancy really trumps any misgivings of the food.
  9. i'll be there eating deliciousness. not messing.
  10. I will 2nd, 3rd, and 4th this! I posted in one of the pizza threads thanking her for her two stone suggestion, and she graciously sends me a PM with some tips, and when I asked her about some of the ingredients she uses, she not only replied with that info, but also sent me her entire pizza recipe! Above and beyond I tells ya!
  11. Cornicione seemed roughly the same as usual, and I attributed it, at the time, to the possibilty of the olives and mushrooms being added this time. I had kind of a raging hunger headache at the time though, so I was just relieved to see the pizza in front of me, and didn't pay attention to issues such as thick-sliced mushrooms and improperly drained olives. Whatever the case, I feel like it was an anomaly, and I'm going to get a regular margherita next time and use it as a control.
  12. I usually pick 2Amys because it's close to my house, and the lady ended up there this weekend after we discovered that Comet is not open for lunch (boo-urns). However, though I'm usually quite satisfied with the pizza there, this Saturday's was dissapointing. I decided to get the margherita as usual, but opted for the addition of mushrooms and olives. Though taste-wise, I enjoying it quite a bit, the pizza (which I asked for well-done), was quite soggy in the center just being floppy as a whole. Either I just noticed it this time or something was off. Still, 2Amys convenience factor can't be beat, nor can the small plates.
  13. Oh, I wasn't offended by the use of the word or anything. And, I agree - it's probably that there is an equivalent term or expression in Italian that may translate to blasphemy in English, when the author may have wanted to phrase it as 'defamatory' statements. It almost seems like the author of the CH post (if it's the same person in question here) went to Bebo looking for trouble, given that she was probably aware of the challenges in their service that they've had in the past. That's pretty weak, if that's the case.
  14. I don't mind the post from the Bebo staffer, but their repeated use of "blasphemy" bugs me.
  15. Clearly that recipe was not messing.
  16. Kai yia Ellhnes? Mporw na ferw kai to diavathrio mou ean xreiazetai!!!
  17. Is Peanut the little youngin who kept running around and giving kisses to folks at at the bar? I could be TOTALLY wrong - and hilariously so too. But if I am not, we were definitely there at the same time!! My gf and I were sitting at the tables on the back end of the bar area and I had to go for the bistro special with the always amazing steak. Chocolate cake for two - also amazing.
  18. I'm going to be here tonight for some dinner at the bar. Come say hello cause I haven't chit-chatted with any Rockwellians since the picnic. Hanger steak calls my name...
  19. You could argue that "Ray's The Classics" is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's not called "Ray's The Avant Garde," so maybe people subconsciously think that by going to a place that emphasizes the classics, they are going to do just that, and stick to their favorites from RTS. That said - please don't get rid of the jumbo prawns. Those are fantastical.
  20. I work in a law firm and one of my coworkers was asking me about places she could send one of her attorneys and a client for dinner, and I actually thought of RK since it's pretty nearby and top notch, but then I realized that I haven't had the chance to go to RK yet and don't know if the atmosphere will be appropriate for a client meeting. I'm pretty sure it will be, but please fill me in!
  21. There must be some serious occult business going on in the kitchen of Maestro... I'm not sure people would be stoked on Zombie Flesh Tartare.
