  1. Friday dinner at WestEnd - salmon rillettes (great!) and skate in brown butter. Either skate is a very delicate flavored thing and sauces tend to overpower it, or this particular one was not very flavorful. Saturday lunch at Raku-Bethesda - Huge bowl of red curry udon soup with shrimp. Beyond hearty meal and a good value at that. Absolutely loaded with shrimp and vegetables. Also had the "Seoul" Train roll of tuna and kimchee. No spice at all, but still kinda tasty (or I was just really hungry) Sunday dinner at Rustico - hearts of romaine salad with framoboise onions + grilled shrimp. Shrimp were nice and plump, and the onions on that salad do me in everytime, I love them. Splits a vegan pizza there with my buddy too w/ a chickpea crust, spinach, and mushrooms. That kind of crust is a bit too dense for me, but the crispiness was nice.
  2. Mango is a pretty good fit with this style of froyo. I had it with the green tea flavor at Tangysweet and felt it worked quite well. I'll need to see if it holds up at Yogato.
  3. After two Tangysweet and two Yogato visits, I've determined I actually prefer Mr. Yogato's slightly sweeter variety of original froyo. However, I have been unable to find a good topping to pair to the yogurt, because my choice of starfruit the first time was bland and chocolate syrup the second time was too overpowering and contrasting. However, I'm happy I got 5% off my yogurt the first time for ordering like Sean Connery..
  4. Headed over here Friday night for some dinner and drinks and were initially met with an estimated 2 hour wait for a table, but decided to brave the crowds and headed to the upstairs and markedly more serene bar to wait it out. We were immediately swept up by the very friendly bar staff and were informed that if we didn't mind sitting at the bar, that a couple of stools would be opening up very shortly. Lucky for us, that was the truth, and we hunkered down for what turned out to be a meal that probably surpassed anything I've had at the other big-name Belgian joint in town :-D Since Granville's and les moules are pretty much synonymous, I decided to go for the classic combo and got Les Moules Navigateur and a large bowl of frites to split with the lady while she enjoyed the beet salad. After Folkman's appearance on the Food Network, the air was thick with the scent of his signature blue cheese mussels and, thus, I was a square peg in this situation. However, I was absolutely enthralled with the light spice and fragrance of this recipe of coconut milk, serrano, garlic, and lime. While, there were a few bum mussels in the bowl (funky taste or some grit), it was hard to tear me away especially when the bartendress decided to arm me with a baguette to sop up the broth. I'm clearly a very amiable diner as it's hard for me to find a restaurant or restaurant dish that I dislike, but I could safely argue that GM's is climbing fast to the top of my favorites list.
  5. After an ill-fated attempt to purchase iPhones from the Bethesda Row Apple Store, ferment everything and myself walked over to see how Redwood was doing and we were pleasantly surprised to find that Redwood was in the midst of its soft-opening with the bar & lounge area open to the public and dining room open to select patrons (seemingly). A cursory glance at the bar menu featured a focus on regional providers and included items such as steamed mussels, a chicken liver mousse, a nice burger, and a few other items that Eric will have to jog my memory to recall. The space is impressive but not overwhelming with tall ceilings and rich wood paneling that hopefully did not come from Redwoods, but serves to give that illusion!
  6. That's true - I think I did see that on the menu, though I would love to see some nice, hot Hatch green chiles come September! I will have to experiment with the existing toppings on my next visit.
  7. Do you think that roasted green chiles might become available as a topping, so as to make a New Mexico-style burger (guacamole, roasted green chiles)?
  8. Before Spike's arrival, we were still eating roast mutton and garum, and drinking mead. Still, I'm gonna check out the GSE because a good burger is still a good burger.
  9. What New Year? More like the end of the month! Also, pizza man, when it comes to Pho 75, a lot of us here know what we're talking about.
  10. I would argue that the prices for pho at Pho 75 next door can run equal to the prices at Hell-Burger. A large bowl of pho with some extra toppings and perhaps a plum soda or coffee drink could probably run you 10 bucks or so - which is pretty much what I paid for a burger with gruyere and a Boylan's the other day.
  11. Erm, I think that that sign is targeting McDonald's rather than ML, as evidenced by this close-up.
  12. Quick roundup of the weekend's eats: Thursday: Dinner at 2Amys. Went with the Abruzzese and English Pea and Prosciutto crostini, which unfortunately came out of order, but didn't make either of them any less delicious. The crostini was particularly excellent and a very festive looking item. A particular noteworthy occurrence during dinner was the poor waiter who tripped on the stairs on the way up and sent half his very fully-stacked tray of wine-glasses flying and crashing down the stairs. The crazy thing was how one just kept hearing the shattering and tinkling of glasses for a good 15 seconds or more. It must've felt like an eternity to the poor kid. Saturday: Late lunch at Ray's Hell Burgers and the indoctrination of my Franco-Greek cousin into the cult of the hamburger. 10 oz. of freedom with gruyere and I'd say this one was a score for America. Sunday: Cantler's in Annapolis for steamed crabs and scenery. Also, in addition to our delightful crustaceans, we got to see what appeared to be a possible BUI (boating under the influence - pronounced "buoy" har har) on Cantler's pier with an injured boater doing a perp walk.
  13. I'm happy to say that my visiting Greek-French cousin's first American burger experience was at the Hell-Burger. Not to mention she put the whole thing away. Also, things were much calmer around 6 PM when we arrived and the operation seemed to be running exceptionally smoothly. My diablo-style burger had just the right amount of spice instead of overwhelming the burger. It was fantastic. I was joking that if we just added a soundtrack of metal and tattooed waitresses, we'd have our own, infinitely better version of Chicago's Kuma's Corner. Michael, you like Slayer, right?
  14. Probably headed to Annapolis with the gf and cousin from Greece via France to see the sites and eat some crab. With that in mind, what are some worthwhile establishments that we can sit back, eat some good crabcakes, and enjoy the scenery either in Annapolis or in the immediate vicinity of the town? Much obliged!
  15. Hahahaha. DOES NOT COMPUTE. I'd me far more intrigued if this place was called "Spider Jerusalem's"
  16. Oh shut up Denman, you of all people should have noticed the prominently placed 'LOLZ' in my post!!
  17. I'm mainly amused as to how he perceives himself as an 'ambassador' who will bring 'young & hip' restaurants to DC....because we have NONE of those already!!!
  18. Tangysweet green tea flavor w/ mango topping. Either I'm crazy or the flavors of the mango and green tea work really well.
  19. I used to love this place when I worked down by that area 4 years ago. The food wasn't anything GREAT, but it was definitely a cut above your other buffet style places.
