  1. Bizzump. This seems to be the weekend of Asian noodle soups for me, and I am thankful for it! PTH is now my no. 2 bowl of pho in the DC area. I still prefer Pho Hot, but this was a worthwhile trip. Meat was tasty and tender, broth was nice and hearty (without that cloying aftertaste the broth at a lot of other pho joints has), and the noodles were particularly well-cooked. Best of all, my dining buddy (in his second-ever pho experience!!!) kept remaking how he didn't feel "gross" after dinner. Speaks to the quality of ingredients and execution.
  2. Made my return visit to Daikaya on Friday night, and was glad I opted for the shio this time around (as well as the "peak-harvested" canned corn ). I think the smoky/roasted flavor of the broth with the lightly charred onions and bean sprouts = an A+ combo. I think a testament to that bowl was the fact that I left nothing in the bowl except maybe a half-inch of broth.
  3. A lot of people seem to forget that Pho Viet is right around the corner on 14th and is much better than any other pho place within the boundaries of the District. Pho Hot still remains my favorite in the area (you've reminded me I need to make a pilgrimage soon...), but PV is my go-to in town.
  4. Fun fact: Ike G./Akis and I went to Greek school together back in the 80s/early 90s. Yes, Greek School on Saturdays is a thing. I always remember how he and his cousins would talk with such love about Tippy's, and the love was clear because it was such a unifying bond for their family. When I heard Ike was opening Cava, it made complete sense to me given his family's history with Tippy's. Nice to hear he's paying homage to his roots with this move.
  5. Steak shit the bed somewhere between 4 to 6 months after its opening; it hasn't good in a while. I'm usually happy with the chicken (and meatballs for the occasional variation).
  6. It just seems to me that C"D"D is a street guy, and if he wanted to trade up for stability, he would have done so by now. After 20 years of notoriety, and a pending art exhibit, it would seem slightly odd to me if he chose to cash in for some fancy comfort foods shop is opening that happens to pay homage to his name. For example, I wouldn't expect my new venture "BORF's Borscht Emporium" to be well-received if it was clear that BORF made no affirmative moves to cash in on his post-incarceration notoriety.
  7. Meh. That's the only way I could accurately describe my dining experience here last night. There's nothing wrong or offensive about the food itself; it's a good deal better than a number of restaurants and eateries in the area. It is just that I, like so many others, succumbed to the hype around Mike Isabella's television reputation. From the crispy potatoes to the short rib to the panna cotta, nothing registered so strongly as to elicit an "oh s—" moment from me. Oh well. At least the bar downstairs is pretty good, at least in terms of liquor selection and cocktails.
  8. Not to bump a random thread, but does anyone know what's going on here? From what I can gather from Yelp, their chef has recently departed (Mark Krieger, I believe?), and they're retooling a bit?
  9. That particular bit of diction makes me chuckle (as does much of the website); it reminds me of a description of some Silk Road-era market: "Merchants selling fine garments of the supple silk, and elsewhere, traders hawking the most mysterious of spices! Oh, and down the road, a young man was dying of cholera. And around the corner, a chemist selling antiscorbutics for sailors passing through!"
  10. This is sad news, indeed. This is where I had dinner with my parents on my 21st birthday, and I still remember the swordfish I got. I wish Bob well, and hope that he doesn't go far away because his name is indeed part of DC's restaurant lore.
  11. To Room 11, because I like to see warm and friendly people succeed through hard work. Stoked to visit the expansion space tonight!
  12. Don't. I liked the idea when I ordered it at the Crystal Shitty location, but the execution was non-existent. I received a burger patty devoid of flavor (none that I can recall, in any case), a mush of vegetables that vaguely tasted like pickles, and some mysterious sauce that is akin to the special sauce from Krusty Burger (a.k.a. sun-baked mayonnaise). The end result was caloric satisfaction, but spiritual and gustatorial famine. And this does not take into account the most atrocious side of french fries I have ever had. Blackened, little bits of potato cooked beyond recognition and dripping with grease. That was a cardinal sin for a burger joint and I've since vowed to never again give any money to the GSE. Redeeming culinary value for a burger joint, in my mind, is to do something that the 800 other burger joints in this town don't do. Given that you have an endless choice of burgers in this area—from Ray's to Palena Cafe to Shake Shack—why should we pay for celebrity (c-list at best) and nothing else?
  13. Are there any initial reports about this place now that it is open? It's in my neighborhood, so I am hopeful that it is worthwhile.
  14. I don't know if this thread is worth bumping, but having been a regular patron since day 1, I think I have gotten a feel for what is good and has remained consistent and wanted to provide a status update. I've tried the chicken, steak, meatballs, and tofu on several occasions, and the I think the most consistent protein choice is the chicken. The steak has varied wildly from juicy and flavorful to tough and bland. The tofu is nothing worthwhile, and the meatballs—albeit tasty—are overly greasy for my tastes. This leaves the chicken as the most consistently flavorful protein choice. I usually stick to the broccoli and long beans as my veggie choices, and I think the broccoli has gotten consistently worse since the opening. It used to be bright green and flavorful, and now has descended into a somewhat bland and jaundiced version of its earlier self. The long beans, however, are still good. Ultimately, my combo of choice has been the chicken and brown rice, topped with half long beans and half broccoli, green curry, papaya salad, and crushed peanuts. Occasionally, I'll get crrraaaazy with the red curry, but it actually is a bit too spicy at times (at least, they're not joking when they say the curries are spicy!).
  15. I'm coming out of hibernation briefly to encourage everyone who has yet to make it to Room 11 to do so now. The establishment has a strong cocktail program and a strong kitchen, and quite possibly, one of the friendliest staffs in the city. Personal favorites include Jess' sazerac and the roasted fennel salad (don't know if this is still on the menu). Just go.
  16. Dropping in to say hello because I haven't been on this board in like a year or something (mostly because I don't have time anymore to go out to eat! stupid law school + work). What's on the menu these days? I am just telling a coworker about RTC and she sounds pretty stoked, so I want to give her a heads up. I presume crab bisque and hanger steaks are still present and kicking ass.
