  1. Oh yes -- the lamb was truly excellent. I actually went lighter and got the beet salad and the tuna sashimi. The hearty beets and crunch walnuts were fantastic and surprisingly filling. Of course, my sweet tooth started buzzing and I got the massive red velvet cupcake...holy crapola, so good...and I'm not even a big cream cheese frosting fan.
  2. Actually, the accent is on the omicron in "avgo". But since "avgolemono" is one word, the only emphasis is on the "le" part. So, it ought to read/sound like "avgoLEmono."
  3. I was there with Eric last night watching the returns and it seemed like the bar menu has no options cheaper than maybe 14 bucks (except the salads and frites). The Serrano ham and manchego sandwich I had last night was pretty good, but I doubt it was anything as impressive as the duck reuben.
  4. Apparently my buddy Kenric will be featured on the wall at Hell-Burger for being the only customer to ever polish off a triple-triple - a triple patty burger and triple scoop root beer float.
  5. A group of friends and I are wondering where to go watch the returns and the best idea I could come up with was Brasserie Beck (central location, TVs, good beers, and frites). However, it's likely that the bar at Beck's will be slammed, so what would be some reasonable alternatives between the Convention Center and Dupont Circle? Thanks in advance.
  6. Sorry, but I don't think I will be joining everyone this Sunday...
  7. Went here last weekend. My buddy KP was only the second person in Hell Burger history apparently to request the 3 scoop root beer float, which was completely polished off in about 3 minutes. I opted for the recommended burger with the spicy green sauce, guac, and a relatively safe vermont white cheddar. I can't complain about the deliciousness, but I was a bit dismayed at how soppy and messy the bun became. I think next type, I'll opt for the jalapenos, but I think I'm liking this general set-up as my go to hellburger.
  8. Thanks for the update. This particular project of mine has completely fallen by the wayside, but this is good to know if I gear up to start a pickle bed.
  9. I really enjoyed the Peppermint Penny cupcake I had last weekend. It appears that the batches can be hit or miss, according to what Jamie said above, but in general, mine was very moist chocolate cake and the frosting was very refreshing, esp. with the fresh mint leaf on top.
  10. The fish and chips dish at Central doesn't really seem to get much play on here, but I had this dish for lunch on Friday and enjoyed every bite. I was lamenting the fact that there were only four pieces of cod, but oh they were full of crispy gloriousness.
  11. I went across the street from the office to meet up with my girlfriend while she waited in line to get her first cupcake from the establishment, and of course, I began receiving death stares from the 20 some odd ladies in line for cupcakes. Not one to incite a riot among cupcake-fiending ladies, I promptly made it clear that I was not in line but merely waiting for my girlfriend to buy a few cakes. I should note that the store had run out of cupcakes at around 2 PM and had to shut down for a bit to prepare the 2nd batch that was due to come out at 3 PM. When I grew tired of waiting for the cupcakes to be put on display and went back to my office to wait, it was now 3:15 PM and the line had stretched up Connecticut to the Suntrust. 15 minutes, the gf called with the cupcakes and I had a chance to sample the seasonal flavor - the root beer float. The root beer cake is really nice, but again, it struck me as a bit dry. But the flavor was root-beery and not completely overpowering. The vanilla cream cheese was nice and not tooth-achingly sweet. The gf simply described her peanut-butter cup cupcake as "so yummy" so she was clearly happy. I'm looking forward to letting the lines die down, but so far, I think HC has been pretty good. I think I could do with less frosting, but that's my humble opinion.
  12. We were here for brunch promptly at quarter after 11 today and were the only ones in the establishment save for the staff. Funny that you should mention it, but my girlfriend got the pancake and we found that the pancakes were actually slightly underfunded with chips, so you must have gotten the batch where the proportions were corrected. I really enjoyed my eggs benedict for the price point :-)
  13. Penny of Hello Cupcake very generously delivered TWO DOZEN cupcakes to our office today around 4 PM, which was masterful timing, because the moment I sent out the email to some of our attorneys and staff, it was like a Lord-of-the-Flies-esque rush to my desk to get cupcakes. It was quite possibly the funniest thing I have seen in a while. Among the flavors sent included the 'Heart of Darkness' (chocolate), 'You Tart!' (lemon), 'Princess' (vanilla w/ pink frosting), Triple Coconut, and 24 Carrot cupcakes. I had the opportunity to sample the coconut and carrot cake cupcakes and liked both of those quite a bit. The cream cheese frosting is very rich, but the cakes are quite light and airy, unlike another purveyor of pastries. Also, my carrot cake sample had a big ol' chunk of walnut, which I'm a fan of. The only miss seemed to be the chocolate one, but it's early on enough that there's plenty of time to fix that. They're also going to be serving coffee and other drinks in the store, so I think it's going to be a very welcome addition in our neighborhood.
  14. Curry laksa from Nooshi yesterday for lunch. I got it to go and took it back to my office. Curry laksa is probably a bit too involved a soup for carryout as I had to pour the broth and meats + tofu from one container into the container with the noodles and bean sprouts. Still, I was extremely proud that I successfully managed to avoid spilling or splashing anything onto my work clothes. Final verdict in the 19th & M curry laksa competition goes to Malaysia Kopitiam's version, with their spicier, thicker curry and better chunks of chicken.
  15. So, I had a great RW lunch here yesterday with a co-worker, and it was completely unexpected since I'm always iffy about RW. The RW menu this time around appears to be broader and with minimal upcharges, in contrast to the winter RW. I started off with the hamachi dish which I thought was middling at best. The idea was nice, but the slices of hamachi were difficult to fork and get bites of the apple and cucumber along with it. However, the pork belly entree with snap peas, boiled peanuts, and rye berries in ham hock boullion was excellent. Crispy, fatty, porky deliciousness that hit all the right notes, esp. with the boiled peanuts. Also, a generous slice of the lemon chess pie was an excellent cap, and I did not expect the slice to be as big as it was. Kudos to Vidalia for delivering such bang for the buck despite the usual trends that one finds during RW.
  16. It was touch n' go for a bit, but I am here today to tell the tale!
  17. Friday night: Dinner at Central for my birthday - Started off with the excellently peppery Gin Rickey, spilt the mushroom pearl pasta risotto and chilled ratatouille (I love this app so much), and got the braised beef cheeks as the main. I love Central, but the heavy cooking is becoming almost a cliche. I thought I was literally going to pass out and/or die at the table from the food. We barely made a dent into our apple pan dowdy as a result, though it was delicious. Sunday mid-day: Woke up with an intense craving for pho, and seeing as Pho Hot was too far to satisfy this, went to the old standby of Pho 75. Got a regular bowl of the eye-round, flank, and soft tendon. Broth seems to have improved since my last visit, but the noodles were a bit too elastic for my tastes, and the servings of tendon were paltry. It would have been better if I had gotten a different bowl and got the tendon on the side as I often do.
  18. Ding ding ding - we have a winner. This truly is the best bowl of pho I have had in years and the entire establishment screams "I'm a champ." From the glistening, CLEAN interior and the individually wrapped chopsticks and spoons to the rich, star-anisey broth, I'm going to have a very difficult time justifying going to Pho 75 anymore. Only drawback? It's too far, unlike Pho 75's Rosslyn location, which is generally a hop, skip, and a jump away for me. I dearly wish that Pho Hot would open up closer to the city, because I'm pretty sure they would be flush with cash.
  19. That's a pretty strong endorsement. Well, at least in the eyes of those who put Magnolia in the pantheon of baked goods.
  20. Not Mr. Yogato. I'm merely ascertaining that mango is likely to be a good combination with this style of froyo.
