  1. Am I the only one who wants to open a pho/BBQ place called "Pho, Q"?
  2. OK, my connection was bad, but here's some info: There is no smoking (people can smoke outside when outdoor seating becomes available). On tap: Allagash White, Sierra Nevada, Stone Smoked Porter, Old Dominion Lager, Chimay Triple, Clipper City Winter Warmer (a dark ale). A few menu items (to give you an idea): omelets, quiches, antipasto plate, burgers, sandwiches (ex: roasted chicken salad; tomato and mozzarella), pizzas, ribs, meatloaf, mussels. Please keep in mind that this is their first day, and they may be still working out some kinks. And please let me know what you think- they'd value the feedback!
  3. Don't know yet about the menu, but will find out tonight (or in an hour or so, as hubby is eating lunch there now while helping out). Smoking policy- again, not sure. Sorry. Hope to find out very soon.
  4. Open City is now open for business (opened softly this morning). Check it out! And feel free to call them at 202-332-2331. (their website, http://www.opencitydc.com/, will be updated soon)
  5. I don't have details, but was told it will like a diner/coffeehouse/bar. I know they've been working on the menu and don't think it will be exactly the same as Tryst or The Diner. It does have a pizza oven. Wish I had more to tell you- I'll work on that.
  6. I have heard some mention about this movie in relation to the name, though I'm not sure to what extent (if any) it factored into the decision (and I'm pretty sure scandal's not what he had in mind...)
  7. I'm ashamed to say that I've forgotten much of what's behind the name (at least to do the name justice)- I'll post more after consulting the hubby.
  8. Wow! A few weeks ago, my company put me in charge of finding a new venue for our annual party (for years we've had it at Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg), and I booked the Waterfall Room for it (for Dec. 9th). I suspected I was a genius for doing so, and now, with it chosen as a special dr.com event, I'm sure of it. (the head honchos made it very clear that they wanted not only good food but a very impressive room and great service- and this seemed perfect) I've never eaten there myself (though I will in a couple months on the company's dime!), so I'm very excited and eager to hear the reports back from you all (sorry, won't be able to join you this time).
  9. In the past year, we've probably ordered from Mr. Chens 10-15 times- all for their peking duck rolls, which were fanstastic the first time we ordered them. The following 9-14 times- eh, not so much. (skimpy, lifeless, soggy, cold filling). Every time we order, we think "Maybe this time they'll be good again. Maybe the last 9-14 times were off nights". I think I'm done with them. We prefer to split a whole peking duck from Eddies, just around the corner (new within the past year, I believe- and they deliver, and are quite nice people!)
  10. Keep in mind, I don't have much experience with Indian food, but... I can't see us going back. I'd had a craving for Indian food for months, so out of curiosity and convenience, we hit this place a few weeks ago (shortly after they opened, to be fair again). I got the butter chicken and the daal- bland, bland, bland. I couldn't stomach more than two bites of the daal (thin and soupy and made with yellow lentils), and the butter chicken was... well, boring. Fine, but bland. But if anyone has a different experience, I'd love to hear it and give them another chance. I hate writing negative things about a newcomer- I always want them to succeed. Especially since the price is right and the location is less than a block from our place. And they deliver.
  11. How I miss this place. Regulars included big dogs, "Madonna Tony" (struck a pose with every pool shot line-up), that Jerry Garcia lookalike who was tortured and brainwashed by the CIA in his basement, Steve Caldwell... And I don't think my tab was ever over $10- and that was a steep night that made you wonder if you'd ticked the bartender off. www.greendoortavern.com Our wedding afterparty was here. You should see my dress (day after).
  12. How could I forget- the Broome Howard Inn catered our wedding in June down at the college and did a fabulous job, and the Green Door is hands-down the best dive bar in the world. I'm just sorry Spinnakers in Ridge (where my husband used to work with brendanc) is no longer (don't be fooled by the new "Spinnakers")
  13. My first time Corduroy experience last Wednesday was incredible- thanks again to all who offered advice! Unfortunately, they were out of the Vidalia onion soubisse (at 6:00!)- which worked out well for me, as my second choice was the lobster salad, which ended up being my favorite part of the meal- plump, juicy, flavorful, summery- what's not to love? Dinerboy enjoyed the oysters (but I think not as much as the small bite of lobster salad I reluctantly shared...) Halfway through our apps, I remembered to ask about the spring rolls (we meant to arrive early and try these at the bar, but traffic didn't allow for that). Our waiter seemed surprised that we knew about them, and brought out three of the longest spring rolls I've ever seen after clearing our starters. They were delicious- we weren't disappointed. He told us they were the recipe of the general manager's grandmother (Rissa, I believe, who came to chat with the gentlemen next to us throughout dinner, and seemed lovely). Scallops then followed for me, and lamb with goat cheese ravioli for the hubby. My scallops were delicious- some of the best I've ever had- but those potatoes and chanterelles! Mmmmm... (I've come to realize I'm just not much of a "scallops person"- nothing against these scallops, as I enjoyed them very much, but I was wishing I'd ordered the lamb). Oh, the lamb! Fortunately, Dinerboy and I decided before ordering that we'd switch entrees halfway through. Medium rare, tender, delicious- and those ravioli were so fun! I'm getting this dish all for myself next time. I ended with the sorbet trio (peach, mango, and strawberry- the perfect ending on a hot summer evening), and Dinerboy got the pistachio bread pudding (and was too full to really enjoy it- lucky me, I got to polish it off for him, as I'm the bigger eater). Service was perfect. Oh, and at our waiter's suggestion we enjoyed a fabulous riesling, the name of which escapes me now. (Dinerboy switched to a glass of red with his lamb). Looking forward to returning!
  14. My parents used to enjoy the CD Cafe in Solomons while visiting me at school down in "the county" (I thought it was just my crowd that called it that). Stuff like shepherd's pie, curried chicked salad pita, burger, etc. I vaguely remember liking their potato salad. But yeah, there's not much there (that we found, anyway). Vera's always beckons, but we've yet to step inside. I'll ask my Lusbian friends where they go for good eatin'.
  15. Thanks!! (The real fun was the afterparty, thanks to your wonderful sister!) And thanks everyone for the advice- I think I'm sold on the lobster salad and onion soubisse. And the Kit Kat thang. And the scallops. And as much as I want Dinerboy to order the lamb, he just might get those soft shells... I'll definitely report back! We'll be there at 6, if any other Rockweilers are around. I'll be the one in the ventworm balloon hat, and Dinerboy will be wearing a blue cotton striped shirt. To Rocks!
  16. I'm FINALLY getting to Corduroy tomorrow for their extended RW (it is still going on, right?). I'm so excited! But I have a few questions... Are the Ron Jeremies only available at the bar? What is the proper dress? And I'm pretty sure we'll be ordering the scallops and the lamb as entrees, but I can't narrow down the apps. I want the mozzarella porcupine, the Vidalia onion soubisse, the lobster salad, and the corn chowder. Which two reign supreme? Or should we just order them all?
  17. Dinerboy and I were planning to, but now he's sounding sick... Still, there's a chance we'll be there. I think we're going to play it by ear. If we make it, what sould we bring?
  18. Those were the days. I remember catching feasts down at Chancellor's Point one summer ('99?), and the very next summer we'd be lucky if our chicken necks lured 5 crabs all day (excluding the illegal small ones we threw back). We didn't do it daily, though. I miss St. Mary's...
