  1. "I"m out of reactions today" Think about how profound that statement could be. I"ve had some days at work where I've run out of reactions. In fact, last Thursday was one of them. I was so....confounded by a couple of academics, that I was out of reactions.
  2. Me too! Well, more than 2 nights; a week. And some island hopping; open to places that require a short sail. Oh the lobster. I am waiting for you, the lobster.
  3. Passed by the storefront and thought it looked like a very interesting concept. I was curious about the menu so tried to see it. While they have their "story" "philosophy" and pretty pictures on the website, no menu! I've complained about various restaurant websites before and this one is annoying too...it keeps moving and yet the info I see is not to be found.
  4. It doesn't matter what I ate, what matters is that I went with a person who selected it and paid the bill. It's nice for lunch, the fish and veggies very fresh. Nothing outstanding or particularly amazing but perfectly serviceable and I really liked the server. She was funny and really, I live to be entertained. They respect allergies and it's easy to speak without raising your voice. For a DC lunch place, that's not bad.
  5. Had an emergency stop at Westover yesterday, which was a Monday. The beer garden was hopping. The store, the actual store, has more beer than ever. For example, the case that used to hold cheese, now holds more beer. Amazing. Wine prices are outrageous. I think it's like an entire 1/3rd beer now.
  6. Just have to point out that DC's tap water can't be used to mix baby formula power today: 2nd High Boil Water Area_V2.pdf on dcwater.com
  7. Have you tried ARLNow's comment section? This gets to prostitution in about 3 comments.
  8. WOW. I did not see this end coming. Thanks for the recommendation. It's a true story that "listens" like a fast-paced noir fiction.
  9. Great points made in Vox article. Men might not know that breastfeeding is difficult, and hurts. We also lost a generation of breastfeeders so, for example, our moms, aunts, ect., could not pass down the info on how to get that newborn to latch. That education class the author writes about sounds like downright cruel and unusual punishment.
  10. DCS: 2 syllables...only. BTW, IRL I can't really say "doesn't" unless I really concentrate. And I mispronounce other words that I just avoid if possible (New Orleans farks up language abilities too).
  11. Oh my dear, I do. Went a few times. I remember once going very, very drunk. Eating a big steak and salad bar before going back to my now husband's shitty ROZZZZlyn apartment. Good times.
  12. Even the Swiss can lobby the US government: Nestle’s Lobbying Activity on opensecrets org In fairness, they make lots of things...like chocolate.
  13. Just finished PITCH podcast by Audible. https://www.pitchpodcast.org/about/ It frames itself as a podcast about music, but I disagree. I think it's about culture and history as much as (if not more than) music. Especially enjoyed Blacklist and the final one, Blue Skies. Blue Skies is as much philosophy as anything else.
  14. Also, when living in poverty, or even some developing areas of the world (like Flint) access to clean water is not guaranteed. Did you know that if a woman breastfeeds, her breast cancer risk goes down? It's cumulative too so the more you do it, the lower the risk goes. Oct, 2014 - "Breastfeeding Lowers Your Breast Cancer Risk" by Brittany Cordeiro on mdanderson.com
  15. Abbott's Lobbying Activity on opensecrets.org In fairness to Abbott, they make lots of stuff...like actual diagnostic tests. Nestle is the other big one.
  16. All breastfeeding does is improve the mother's health and baby's immune system. Formula though...makes people lots of money: "The global baby food market is a very competitive industry and retail sales in this segment are projected to grow from 53.31 billion U.S. dollars in 2015 to about 76 billion U.S. dollars by 2021, making it one of the fastest growing food and beverage categories. As the world’s most populous country, it should come as no surprise that China was the biggest market for baby food as of 2016, with over 12 billion dollars in sales revenue, with the United States coming in second place with about seven billion dollars in sales." "U.S. Baby Food Market - Statistics & Facts" on statista.com
  17. Three stand-outs from a recent trip to Ashville: 1. Early Girl is very family friendly and the food pretty fresh and good. I love catfish and this one was so good that I gobbled it up as fast as possible, and before I had to share. Service was a little slow but since we were all drawing on the tables (butcher paper covered) it was fine. I also really liked the pickled food and sauteed green stuff that served as sides. 2. Tupelo Honey for dinner: Servings pretty big and hush puppies were memorable. Somebody at my table spilled their hot chocolate and server brought new one and nobody gave the parents !@#$ for not better controlling their young. Six people dinned and everybody cleaned their plates except for the fish and chips...I think that was just too big. 3. Bomba: Only had coffee and pastries but the breakfast plates looked marvelous and the service was fantastic. --- Burnsville, NC (weezy)
  18. Don't worry about it. I can't even get my fleur-de-lis back so I'll never remember.
  19. Pretty sure I saw the owner of a local European-type restaurant picking up take out here today... "did he see you" asked my husband..."he'll think we're cheating on him" "he's cheating on his own restaurant" I retorted.
  20. Delightfully dinned in daylight and found food fresh and fabulous. Waiter: Spanish accent, beautiful, looked like a 1920s attendee at a Gatsby party. Support stuff: Cute too! Maybe it's the floral dresses. Gazpacho: Perfect. When a gazpacho has a fresh start, a smooth center, and a tart finish, I am in heaven and this stuff was it. FWIW, souper girl's beet gazpacho is almost as good, or maybe better...hard to know. Benzino over perfectly cooked spinach was fresh, flaky, and had just enough acid with a squeeze of grilled lemon. I realize that there have been some conflicting opinions of late but I really enjoyed lunch today. From the service to the food to the decor and my "date". (work thing).
  21. Dammit! I"m far to lazy to redo that but here they are: And the Band Played On Genome War Bad Blood. They all have something in common: The search for a better diagnostic test, crazy big egos, and doing the impossible. That last one DIDN"T do the impossible; the other two did. All three read like fiction (which is a compliment from me; I really like diverting pleasure-reading)
