  1. We did this with our son when he was 2 and have him on video saying "stop torturing me." So funny. Fast forward, both kids eat lemons and limes all the time now.
  2. Have you been for breakfast? I've been a few times. For 9.99, coffee, eggs, another meat, potato side that is easily changed to fruit. Not bad for the DC location.
  3. Beep beep, I'm a sheep I said beep beep, I'ma sheep.
  4. Don/Bart: If you have the RACE issue with the black/white twins on the front, read that one. Wow. Bart, not sure where you live but local libraries often have the capacity to take, sell and give them away. All Arlington libraries will take all of them. They get sold or given away. Schools don't always have storage capacity but if you go the school route, consider less well-off schools. Many of the South Arlington schools (for example) have programs to get print material into children's homes as do some affordable housing organizations. When I was widowed, i just got heigher education. I think back on those 5 years and nothing to show for it but a couple of degrees. THat's it. Not one friend. Ok so I did take some good trips and learned how to eat so that's something. Grief is hard/weird.
  5. Loved the restaurant week branzino, apple salad and whipped sesame/hummas type stuff with fat bread. ($22). No, I'm not trying that hard on this review for some very simple reasons. 1. I expected a menu with lots of dairy-free options but instead, almost everything had dairy on it. Ok, that's the only reason. I'm mad at Momofuku for some reason. Maybe I need restaurant therapy.
  6. It's only since deepwater horizon that there's been a concern...oh and that algae bloom from the 90s. Frankly, my people live really unhealthy lives but long ones. I think the radioactive stuff down there either kills you or makes you roach-strong. If you are 70 and full of New Orleans food, you just might be roach-like, which in this context is a complement.
  7. I did a great job on dinner last night. In an old cast iron pan i fried salmon steaks with just salt and evoo; that's it. It was perfect. 5 yr old girl at everybody's skin if they didn't eat it themselves...and her fish. 8 yr old took maybe 3 bites and it's his favorite fish! For the first time ever, I made mushroom barley risotto and it too was fantastic. In fact, I will plop it into my homemade chicken noodle soup from this weekend (which is now missing both chicken and noodles). Girl at it, boy didn't. Fried up some purple Brussel sprouts in some bacon fat. Bacon didn't survive long enough to be sprinkled on top of the finished product. I ate everything and multiple servings as did husband. Those kids though. Between them both they finished one plate. Weird; their loss.
  8. Had lunch at Yume. I will go again for dinner but without my dining companions (2 of the 3). Yume is fancy, to quote 8 yr old Duneridge. While he claimed the miso was in his top 3 of all times, he especially liked the tofu cubes, the edamame was overcooked. We all completely agreed and did not finish the edamame. I would add that the salt was too fine as I like fat crystals. Duneridge was also quite upset (and not fooled) that their version of California Roll was made with real crab. However, he was the only disappointed person at the table. Eviva liked the crab roll, her salmon and avocado roll and the salmon sashimi (excellent actually). In fact, she savored her meal. This is when I should pause and note that this is a savoring restaurant, which makes me very hopeful for the Omakase. Big D and I ate the Yume Roll, Dragon Roll, and...the Volcano roll. All were great but we did like one more than the other. I liked the tuna-based Dragon best and husband liked Yume best. Minor complaints: There is a make your own section. I really don't like making decisions on the weekend or vacation. The soy sauce bowl was too small for the pieces of sushi. Did I do something wrong? Staff and physical environment are very, very nice. Total bill $85 including a green tea, spicy miso, and cucumber salad (also very good).
  9. For the record, my 5-year-old is insisting on going to NoLa. Furthermore, she wants to eat her body-weight in oysters and "not spicy" seafood. Maybe we will deposit her at the bar* at Herbsaint and fetch her after she's fully full. (we know the one place we cannot deposit our child is the actual bar...all else, ok).
  10. I've been looking at a picture of my grandmother that my husband printed out for me for Christmas. She broke a hip the month I married, and could not attend. She died 1 week after the ACA and 1 week before I gave her a great grandson. In honor of her life, my cousins doug out her gumbo recipe, purchased all the stuff, and we made it while my DMV snowflake was entertained by his southern cousins in NoLa. It was an amazing affair. I will eat any DVM gumbo. I always compare it to Mimi's. and it's often ok. In 2019 I will try this Ann's gumbo and compare it to Mimi's. Not fair, at all; but I will do it anyway. 🙂
  11. I came back to...scale down my review because it was my experience today and last time I went (probably a year or two ago). Both times I had the same impression but others like it. Oddly, last two men I lunched with there both love and are both named Paul. Kev29; is your name Paul? (Kidding, I'm going to assume it's Kevin).
  12. Dammit. I forgot Rasika has "jumped the shark." The staff members are very lovely people. That said, the house seems to be aging and not well cared for and the food tasted like the Indian stuff I get at the grocery and make for myself when I need a quick Indian fix. Why do people love this place? Bombay Club, OTOH, always delights me.
  13. As we told our kids, we went to "Party Chicken". Doesn't look like much, does not have a website, but damn, that Salvadorian food was amazing. (menu link below) https://www.allmenus.com/md/riverdale/281134-pollo-fiesta/menu/
  14. If you have kids, the Kreeger has some nice gardens with sculptures so if it's a nice day, and you have kids, they can run. I went to Kreeger with a 4&7 yr old and didn't feel like they were about to break anything or get kicked out. Worth a go. Our find this weekend was College Park Maryland's airport museum. Two small kids play areas inside. WASP and African American exhibits and old plane and plane parts.
  15. The first time I was actively lobbied by an old-school lobbyist was here. Great memory. That man purchased a lot of yummy for a lot of ladies...and one or two gentlemen. Good times.
  16. Smells good, makes you feel bad once you eat it. I've only had the one experience and it was on this stretch of highway and that's enough. Bottled water is sold though...and the bathrooms were very clean...staff nice. Maybe it does have some stuff to recommend it.
  17. I did consider that but still, MDs who are female, today, are being called "Ms." while their male counterparts are being called "Doctor" IN PRINT I only have a doctorate so get how my honorific can be considered unearned. But...you didn't use the woman's name after the irony. Just sayin'.
  18. other people. I thought that was very well known. I'll admit that I didn't get through the original post...too..Friday night for all of that text.
  19. "by some woman" Come on Don. That sounds assholeish. If any of your readers want to earn science prizes, this link offers tips on how to do it. My girl is 5 and I'm already coaching her. My boy will just get one b/c he is white and male...probably doesn't even need a doctorate. http://www.raiseproject.org/tips.php
  20. I do get it Keith but this area of DC (s. DuPont, n. Farragut) lacks seafood unless M&S works but that too is a chain and not fast. close to fast, but not fast. If I am wrong on this point, tell me. I need a lunch location for tomorrow.
