  1. Of course not paying taxes, I mean not paying credit card fees, keeps prices low...but they aren't much lower than others are they? hum....
  2. Digging up this old thread to share that I got me a Sous Vide thingy for mah birthday! I'm so excited that i can't decide what to try first. Probably going to be eggs b/c it's Thanksgiving and ...I'm not going to experiment on the most important of days. I will share though that the way it looks makes me giggle. Just me? and it's on the internet so I can make it do stuff from afar! So happy. Now I'll read this thread and hopefully learn something.
  3. While I love it. I don't love just paying cash and that weird feeling I get when I think something...odd is going on. Isitjustme?
  4. I've been gone awhile and would like to return to the theme of school lunches. My kids, those wonderful darlings, now want to look at the school lunch choices BEFORE deciding if they want to pack a lunch. Nice. Also, they have, in their kid wisdom, decided that they should not have the same thing two days in a row. FWIW, in my day, this was not an option. Mom got stuff for the week...same stuff, all week. Finally, they like warm lunches in their thermoses. Bless their hearts. Upside, they stopped loosing stuff. Part of me likes it. I think school lunches are where I place my creativity right now.
  5. Quick Take: IT's good. I'll give it that. But is it not Bibiana? Not sure. Not even sure it matters. Solid food, great service, nice atmosphere...and a really dark bathroom.
  6. My kids are over summer. And get this, they have been describing to me what types of lunches they want...so win to me for making good lunches and ...loose to me for same. In other news, my kids have eaten all these cheese and cheese products in the entirety of the world this summer. And cucumbers and tomatoes. That's it.
  7. you and me both. Terrible change. They should call it the "whateveryouwant factory."
  8. "Right?" I'm at work and I just read a press release that was all jargon and I don't know what the release is about. Here's a clip of the FIRST sentence: "...cultural shift has been occurring in the (industry) ecosystem." What the !@#$ does that even mean? An ecosystem can't have a cultural sift. An ecosystem can have a BIOlogical shift or an ecological shift but cultural? Maybe if we were talking about some nice molds. For !@#$% sake.
  9. Quick addition to the excellent review above. I really enjoyed it compared to the old one. It's probably 4X as big, has lots of interactive parts and yes, they brought the climbable duct work with them and made it cooler. The best part for me though is I learned how to get to the Warf an easy way using the orange/silver/something else line. Get off at L'Enfant or even Smithsonian and just walk. So much easier than switching to green and faster than uber/driving and way cheaper then driving. I hate the Warf parking lot. It's poorly designed to get in and out of and expensive AF.
  10. Confession: I had lunch at slapfish today. I was very hungry and I smelled the fried-fish-ness and just had to try. It tasted really good as fried food does but now, a mere 40 minutes later, I'm deeply regretting my choice. The "simple salad" description is exaggerated. Most of the salad was soggy leaves. Accompanying the leaves I also found about 1/2 teaspoon of pickled radish, 3 massively large and dried out carrot rounds and exactly one tiny pickle part. Not the entire pickle, one tiny little part. The other thing I had was deep-fried and was tasty because of that. (Lobster Taquitos) not sure there was lobster in them though.
  11. Took my girl (5.75) to sho-shi zen, which she loves. However, the horror on her face when presented with a paper straw, was priceless. "This is horrible! It goes all wiggly in my mouth." takes another sip "and it tastes funny). She took it out, and took the top off the apple juice and just drank it. She was, straight up, offended. We also over-ordered b/c we were so hungry. On demand, the made her a shrimp and avocado roll (a bit bland) as well as salmon roll, california roll, veggie roll, salmon and avocado and spicy tuna. All yummy and no, girl did not (yet) try the spicy tuna.
  12. well...potstickers, pepperoni, random crackers, celery, carrots and Italian dressing (Kraft) with ice water. Chocolate cake after.
  13. Just finished solo parenting with no migraine. When solo parenting, all quality controls leave me. Every, single, one of them. One had a hamburger the other a hot dog one night. Fish sticks (Trader Joe's) another night and frozen pizza the other. I cut up whatever fruit or veg looked like it needed the knife. That said, my girl (5.5) ate some of my red beans and rice (homemade) for second dinner tonight. #win!
  14. I had a blood transfusion (8 units, meaning 8 random people from New Orleans) when I was very young and before supplies were tested. When tested, I learned I was negative. I feel very, very lucky and did at the time too. Even getting tested at the time was...stigmatized and I was a child.
  15. I had a double set of belly aches and found some candy hidden in very odd places...all eggs gone by end of Easter day. (that's a good thing)
  16. And the image was captured by a woman. The image of her on twitter the moment the image was captured is priceless. It portrays that absolute delight we all feel when we discover something for the first time. I bet she felt downright euphoric. Katie Bouman
  17. Cape May Over this last beautiful weekend, I escaped responsibility to read lots of books and walked around Cape May. Exit Zero: Usually, I love this place. This weekend the food servings seemed smaller than usual and my curry soup was so salty and thick, it was almost inedible (and I love salt). Pro Tip: They now have a liquor license and their whites by the glass are not that good (pinot gris and sauvignon blanc) Black Duck: I love this place and it delivered on Saturday night. For the first time the table ordered the pupu platter and while I liked and enjoyed the appetizers, I loved the salads/veggie slaw stuff that was under the actual appetizers. At $32, it's a high price to pay for apps but then again, they BYOB so maybe it's okay in the end. I also think my wonderful delicious scallops were $32. On other nights I've enjoyed duck and lamb dishes, especially if they are on special. Shamone: $35 tasting and BYOB? Yes, thank you. Run by the guy who runs George's (yummy breakfast, big fresh salads...everything's good), this is a weird little place. I love the tasting menu but of the 15 courses, 14 were quite small. Twice I have been and they've dealt with my food allergies without complaint which is impressive for a tasting menu. Blue Pig: No. Don't go eat at Congress Hall. Just don't. George's: Love for breakfast and lunch. Pro Tip: Get there at odd times like 11am for lunch or 2pm. It's tiny and busy.
  18. So Ballston Quarter...is it going to make it? I realize that it's not fully open but there's something off about it. Maybe it's just that it's not fully open. I don't know. I have been to Mi & Yu noodles twice. The first time miso ramen was bland and beef way overcooked. This time dashi ramen was way over salty (and I love salt) but the duck and egg were nice. Hubby and kids at new barbeque down in the belly of the beast and said it was bland. To quote husband it "tasted like reheated catered food." 5 yr old girl child did eat all of my extra noodles so there's that upside.
  19. Update: I have the two lunch boxes back and for the record, the 5 yr old has no trouble bringing them back but the 8 yr old can't seem to remember. is it weird that I'm considering a ball lunch or ball dinner? I"m inspired!
