  1. I did, but if you go the links it takes you to thread for the main restaurant and I wanted opinions on brunch. For instance the Matchbox brunch menu actually looks more interesting than many, but I couldn't find anything much about brunch on the main thread. Luckily Ted's Bulletin has a lot on breakfast, unfortunately, the reviews aren't great.
  2. If I wanted to go to this game, what time would I have to leave Arlington to get there in time with 270 traffic? Anyone do this commute that could help me out?
  3. Really? What style do they do? I am down that way a good will have to stop.
  4. We are going with foodie friends to see the Lego exhibit at the Building museum Sunday. I need a good spot for brunch beforehand. Although would settle for lunch too, as I am not huge on breakfast. My thoughts were: Againn (because I love it, but the brunch menu wasn't too appealing), Jaleo (just different), Ted's Bulletin (although reviews are a bit sketchy), Matchbox or Bistro Bis. I just want something nice, but not boring. Any thoughts on the above or other suggestions?
  5. Except they said the hotel chain wants a new signature dish for its menu—something healthy, yet sophisticated and easily executed in a hotel kitchen. To me Eggs chesapeake are not healthy or sophisticated. At least squid ink pasta is sophisticated, although mussels and pasta aren't particularly healthy. It is healthier and more sophisticated than short ribs with polenta or potatoes. Short ribs in esence are unhealthy, comfort food. And the other winning breakfast had hollandaise, pancetta and potato. Not healthy either. So really Hilton didn't want healthy or sophisticated it wanted things that people staying in a hotel would think were good and that they would order for room service regardless of health or sophistication.
  6. That is a good idea. And luckily it is about that time!
  7. I got really fed up with Chowhound today and needed to rant. There was someone responding to a post on someone who wanted "Philly-ish" places, especially cocktails. So me being a glutton for punishment who still tries to participate on Chowhound for almost unknown reasons at this point, responded with the normal list of suspects who make great cocktails. Then some girl originally from Philly or spending some time there comments that for cocktails you are shit out of luck and there is nothing like there is in Philly. She of course has never been to PX admits it, and probably hasn't been to the Gibson, Tabard Inn, Central, PS7 and etc, but still even though she hasn't been to the very places that could offer what she is seeking decides to bash the really talented mixologists in our area. GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. That would never happen on here. I find myself posting less and less there and seeing fewer of the old friends I recognized on there and liked to talk to. It is just so sad, it used to be such a different place. I have been a member there back when it was a primitive message board when message boards were just getting started and I would have been using babysitting money to eat out. If people have nothing of substance to offer, why don't they either gain substance or not respond. *Sigh* I wish I felt better after writing this. I don't.
  8. Between the heat, stupid morning doves building nests in my flower pots using my plants as building materials and a bug blite I am having, my flowers and veggies on my balcony are not doing well. I have tried to keep the bugs off the non-edibles with soap spray, but then it damages the plants still.... and with the heat they are getting really dry really fast, but I also have to be careful not to over water a lot of them. I think I will have 3 tomatoes this summer and that is it. Luckily my orchids are loving the humidity, and they can go a few days if I travel. Maybe I just need to acquire even more orchids... if only they tasted as good as tomatoes and peppers.
  9. I noticed there wasn't a thread on Thai Terrace, and while it may not be Bangkok 54 or Thai Square, Thai Terrace is pretty good, especially for delivery if you live in the area. The one thing that I really like about Thai Terrace is they will make stuff appropriately spicy and won't dull it down for you, unless you request that then I am sure they would. The restaurant is always clean in appearance and the staff is friendly. I like it over 1Gen for neighborhood Thai, and now that Tara Thai is now Temple and an odd amalgamation of its former self, Thai Terrace is our go to I want food fast, I want to walk and I want something different place (although we always order the same things). Dishes I like are the Noodles From Heaven, Ka Prow and Pad Prik Pao. But the thing I really like is when you order delivery it arrives hot, well packaged and they never screw up your order. This is something that a lot of places seem to not be able to handle in our area. And if you say you want it spicy, it comes spicy. Very spicy. Anyway don't go out of your way for it, but if you are in the area, especially for delivery you might give it a shot.
  10. Although you can eat Pupatella's cold the next day... I decided to try a bite before heating the oven and the sausage pizza cold was really good cold so I ate it that way. I didn't expect this, but was pleasantly surprised.
  11. I want to give Pupatella a few more tries before I really make a final decision, but I think the pizza I had today was very good, but it lacked the finesse of the pizzas at Orso. The crust wasn't as much of a highlight, but there were more toppings, but for people who don't care as much about the bread itself they will probably like Pupatella better because the toppings really shined and were put together well. I had their specialty pizza with their homemade sausage which was great sausage, but the pizza had too much cheese for me, it had so much it was gloopy. But that is something that I am not sure is typical which is why I would like a couple more tries before I make a final decision. I will say it is nicely priced for big portions. And the eggplant arrancini where really good, crispy with great flavor. But I like the crust at Orso better after my first attempt. But will definitely be back to try more as there was a lot about it I really liked, especially that sausage. And their sandwiches looked really good too.
  12. Reading this thread seems to make all my husband's dislikes much more manageable. And he has gotten very good at being a good sport and trying things or politely eating around them. He has a long list though: grapes, most berries, except strawberries, coconut, artichokes, mushrooms- although he loves mushroom sauces and the flavor in dishes, just won't eat them, cauliflower, onions not chopped very small and hidden in something, most soft or moldy cheeses, whole grain breads unless they are more soft and finely ground, limas, brussel sprouts (which I dislike too), large chunks of tomato or slices, some root veggies, rhubarb, avocados, etc etc. He claims many are textural things, but I think he just has set ways- who knows maybe I am wrong. But I can work around it all pretty well, I get what he doesn't like for me and get it all to myself! I have to give him credit though because after meeting me he has become much more adventurous. And he is perfectly normal otherwise, I am much more particular in our household. There are a lot of things that I didn't like that I now do it has just taken time. But Mom did a very good job of introducing healthy foods so early that I like most all fruits and veggies, breads with high fiber and such. Talking with my little cousins and godson I am amazed sometimes at what they don't like. My cousin doesn't like celery, how can you dislike celery? Forgot to add to my Hubby's list bi-valves, crabs which he has to pick and lobster if he has to extract it himself- he apparently wouldn't have made it as a forager.
  13. I am so sick of crabcakes benedict for breakfast, I can't believe that got any credit. It is on every menu anywhere. You don't need a Top Chef to come up with that dish. Tonight's results just floored me. I am really disappointed in this season. I could stop watching, but I keep hoping for a glimmer of hope.
  14. I was thinking Coppi's but I don't think there is parking very close... What about Hanks? I guess it gets noisy.
  15. Really though a decent pie isn't hard... if you can't remember the recipe for pie crust then I am just not sure about your memory abilities, when you know you are going on a show like this wouldn't you brush up on a pie, a dessert, classic sauces and dishes? I know Arnold said he was just winging it, but that just isn't very smart. And fruit pie, chess pie or pecan pie fillings have all of really 3 or 4 ingredients and are delicious. I think Tom could probably make a great pie in all reality. I am not a baker at all (read the baking 911), but I can whip out some good pies, no recipe. And if you don't remember the pie crust recipe, why not make a crust similar to a graham cracker crust?
  16. Thanks Dean, I get leftovers taken home a lot (sometimes for me, sometimes for the dog, sometimes for Hubby who is working late). I don't mind packaging them myself at all. I would really hate to think someone would do something bad to them, as I am generally a nice person who tips well. I would think in most service industries where word of mouth is important you would take care to make even the after-meal food good (i.e. not purposely mess them up). I really appreciated the other week when Lebanese Taverna gave me extra pita to go home with my dish, it made a great lunch the next day and is a reason I really like them. They are thoughtful and generous. I would hope any server that got caught doing something like that would be severely disciplined or let go, that is awful. Sometimes I order more than I can eat so I can take it home. That really made me horrified when I read that.
  17. You would think in Washington where this happens (for per diem reasons) often people would be a little more understandable. I completely understand that it takes more time and is annoying, but one reason why our city often fairs better than others in times of hardship or boom times, is the money from the Federal Governments presence. So I think it needs to be accepted if you want that business you gotta accept those hoops. And if you don't want to: put it in writing on the bottom of the menu or when someone asks, don't say you can! But then don't expect the business of those types of people. I never carry cash, unless I know I am going to something/place that I need cash for and my husband isn't going along. I don't like having a large amount of cash in my wallet. And sorry, but I am young and have grown up using debit cards for everything at this point. I can keep track of my balance much better by remembering my debits than drawing cash out and only using that, plus then I would end up paying huge amounts of ATM withdrawal fees for every time I wanted to buy something last minute. I normally can go out with people where we just split the check on two cards or three cards. But I am also a lot more likely to spend much more money if I can use my debit card. Big groups always get messy, and I too wonder if it takes all that much more time if you are running multiple cards anymore anyway? I guess if you want to put on an auto tip you could keep it on if you are just running cards on the same tab? Couldn't you put an auto-tip on each individual separate check of a big party?
  18. My husband used to use it a lot, when we got married I found they often wouldn't have things like carrots and wouldn't substitute with for instance carrot sticks (whatever you call the cut carrots in bags that are everywhere now days). Or if you ordered Wonder White Bread and they were out they wouldn't send another brand of white bread (I can't even think of another brand as I don't eat that stuff, but Hubby loves it). And I got rotten produce or produce that rotted within two days I stopped and we go to Wegmans. But it is extremely convenient, especially for things like pet food/litter, laudry deterget, lunch meat, soda, etc. You just have to be prepared every now and again to not get things you order, at least that was the case for us here in Ballston, maybe other areas are different.
  19. Is that what happened? I didn't see it on a couple Fridays so I thought it may not be happening this year.
  20. You are right, but the new policy is completely different. About 1/2 the restaurant is for reservations, call ahead in advance, normal reservations now. And not at a set seating time. The other half is first come first serve. There also wasn't really space to fit big parties, now completely different situation again.
  21. I agree the quality of the chefs is way down this season. Many of the past contestants could wipe the floor with these people. I just wish I could see Jen from last season just demolish them.
  22. I will note we were on the reservations side (I had reservations 30 days out just in case as we were a party of 7) not that it means anything different in my mind.
  23. I should note when we had our dinner my brother's fiance noticed we were getting looks from the hostess. I didn't really pay too much attention, but I didn't feel we were lingering too long. She though after a bit said we should move to a bar down the street because she thought they were trying to get us to leave, so we did. It wasn't noticeable enough that it bothered me, but she was a waitress for a long time so I think she is more observant of those signals. Anyway it wasn't a big deal as we had finished our meal.
  24. How big were the pretzel M&Ms? Did they have a good crunch? I am slightly interested/slightly appalled by the notion of pretzel M&Ms enough I might actually buy some.
  25. I thought it went well, we had about 12 attendees. We were outside, which I think is the only place that would have fit us all together. We all ordered individually. I started with a saltena that was wonderful, really soupy, but full of good stuff and great with the pepper relish on the table. I then had the diputado which was impossible to eat as a sandwich so I cut it up, the fries were forgetable so I only ate a couple, plaintiains were much better. The sandwich itself was good, I liked the mix of flavors between the onions, tomatoes, beef and egg, but Hubby's pulled beef arepa was a real winner. Catharine got the Pabellon a Caballo a mix of the pulled beef, rice, black beans, egg, avacado and plaintains and that was a great dish the mix of flavors melding together was great. I would get that again in a heartbeat. And I also really like Zora's corn salad with beef (although her beef was way over the temperature she requested), I thought it had an interesting mix of hot and cold flavors. The table was pretty silent as the food first arrived so I think that is a good sign. I also had a mojito that was decent, but nothing out of this world, but refreshing on a hot night. But would love to hear what others had and what they thought of their dishes. Going back after this anything with the pulled beef to me is a must order.
