  1. I think my Tacklebox objection stems from: very small size resulting in not a lot of big chunk of lobster and bad roll itself. I just think for the price you can get better (like at Hank's which is my favorite too). I don't mind lobster salad as long as the lobster is in big chunks and the taste of the lobster is still the main key to it.
  2. Wanted to note that one of Hubby's co-workers gave us a German Chocolate cake from Cakelove. Normally I really dislike their baked goods, but this one wasn't too bad. I think it may have had to do with the fact that Hubby had it sitting out at his desk all day and the icing (which wasn't traditional german chocolate icing I don't know if that is good or bad, I love the traditional icing, but my Mom makes it so well it may have made the whole thing dissapointing) and the icing oozed into the cake a bit which I think moistened it some. Also since the whole cake was coated in icing I think that may have protected it some from drying out. Not too bad, even right out of the fridge the next day. Now it wasn't extremely moist, but it wasn't horribly dry or butter tasting either. It wasn't my favorite cake ever, but it was much much better than one from a grocery store. I don't know what to think by it, except perhaps I got a tasty fluke on my anniversary.
  3. This explains why there was a camera crew when we were there a couple weeks ago. We finally were nearby when 1) they had key lime cupcakes (Hubby is obsessive about key lime) and 2) the line was only a couple people out the door. Got two key lime cupcakes split one that night and one the next, if I wasn't watching my figure I would have eaten about six in one sitting. I love how fresh their ingredients are, and that the cake is moist without being dense. I also love the icing. I like that there isn't a huge amount of icing, for me it is a good ratio, and the icing isn't too fatty tasting for me.
  4. I meant to say dog, obviously it can be inferred from what I really typed who reins supreme in my household. No sauce served with him, but he did like the lobster and really loved the bluefish. My dog is a bit of a foodie... He also really loved all the attention from people passing by!
  5. Husband and I took my step-mom and two sisters out to American Flatbread Saturday night in Clarendon. We had tried to get reservations at Liberty, or Eventide, but man I don't know if it was graduations or proms, but reservations anywhere this weekend for a group were few and far between. So we decided pizza and salads. We started with the figs and pita and hummus. The figs were good, although the small amount of cheese was rather disappointing. More like a little dollop than a stuffing. The pita and hummus was good, but I am not sure I need more flatbread when I go here to start with. I liked the spicy hummus though. We had a bottle of Organic Santa Julia Sangiovese, which was one of the better wines I have had here, but still not earthy enough for me. For entrees we had half cheese and herb and half VA Ham on one pie and half revolution, half spinach, caramelized onion and sundried tomato on the other half. The Cheese and herb was really good, I loved the fresh herbs they were very pungent in a good way. The Virginia Ham seems to be better than it used to be, I don't know if they have tweaked the recipe, but last night it was gaining ground on Liberty Tavern's Vermont Pizza, still not all the way there, but gaining ground. I am not sure why, perhaps different cheese, ham not cooked as much? Not sure. The revolution was good, it was supposed to be without mushrooms, but came with, which was fine with me, but other picked them off (and then I ate those too). I like the revolution with pepperoni, but this was good; however, the spinach sundried tomato and carmelized onion (with red sauce) on the other side was much much better. Fresh spinach makes so much of a difference on pizza and all the flavors melded so well. We didn't get dessert thinking we would go next door (since the line to Georgetown cupcake was around the block earlier in Gtown), but they were closed!!!!! We should have gotten apple pie... that will teach me. We were really sad Bakeshop VA was closed as I had promised they were as good as gtown cupcake. Next time, no hummus, more pie.
  6. I have been to Tacklebox twice lately due to Groupon. One night I had grilled bluefish with mac and cheese and grilled broccoli. We had the god that evening and just sat outside eating out of styrofoam boxes. The Grilled bluefish was really very tasty, although the piece I had looked a little raggedy, not a nice looking filet, but I think it was just from all the movement to grill from grill to box. The mac and cheese here is not worthwhile at all. It is soupy in a wierd Kraft type of way. The grilled broccoli here though is really good, simple, healthy and good. Hubby had the lobster roll (I don't know why) he was disappointed. I don't blame him. He had another a few days later at Coastal Flats that was so much better. Next adventure was this past Saturday when I was wedding dress shopping for my sister with my other sister and step-mother. We only had 30 minutes so we stopped in one sister got the bluefish which she loved. Step-mom and I got fish tacos. I really liked these, I like the sauce served with them and the slaw. Side of grilled broccoli to share. Other sister had the crabcake. She seemed to like it, it looked good, looked like not a lot of filler, but I didn't get to try it. But everyone really seemed to like the place and it got us in and out quick and over to the JCrew to find her wedding dress (which we did). Later she said she wanted to come back to DC to go back there again.
  7. I second Palena. Especially because there aren't a lot of people in the back room so it tends to be quiet and you definitely wouldn't take the 3 year old in the back room section. And the wine list isn't bad so you should be able to find something you are happy with. I just haven't been loving the food at 2941 lately, it is good, but just a little normal to me, but the atmosphere is quieter, wouldn't take a 3 year old and they have a lovely, lovely wine list. So if the menu looks good- they prepare everything very well, just hasn't been what I have been into lately. I really love Marcel's so hope that Sthitch isn't correct, but I wouldn't want to be the one to test the theory with so few meals by yourselves. Is Trummer's on Main in Clifton too far out of the way? Lovely wine list. I have had excellent meals of late, and the tables are spaced so it isn't too noisy? I would love to have an Anniversary Dinner here.
  8. I always want to stop here when I have to go to court in Prince William County. And I drove by and then it closed for the season, drove by, then closed for the season. This past Monday I did well in court so I said, "Ahhha! I am going to stop and treat myself." Kline's just looks like that custard shop you could find all over the country in small town America twenty or so years ago, probably because it has been around forever, but the thing is, it is still here. There was a line and lots of kids in the back enjoying their ice cream at the tables. I really liked the plain vanilla custard here. To me it tastes very rich, like drinking whole milk, it just has that good fat flavor that makes it seem very full of body. I got it mixed with heath bar as that is reminiscent of my child hood. Was even better to have while I endured stop and go traffic on the way home to Arlington on 66. After eating some other custards in the area, I think it might be my favorite. Would love to hear if their flavored custards are as good, or the sundaes.
  9. Probably not your thing, but if you like fruity cocktails, I recently had a couple good ones at Cafe Atlantico. I would also add that the last time I was at Rasika, but it was a while ago, so that may not still be the case (Gina now at PS7 used to be there and I think the good cocktail program she put in place was still there at that time). As a note every time I go to Eventide the cocktail menu has changed, and sometimes I go every couple weeks, I love that because I get to constantly have new and seasonal cocktails, but I hate when a drink I love is no longer there, and I am so forgetful I can't remember the name so that they could remake it if they had the ingredients. D'oh!
  10. Had lunch with the hubby here yesterday. Got the Pad Wonsen. I like the noodles and bean sprouts and the chicken, but the sauce was just a little too sweet it left me a little ugg feeling in the tummy on a warm day. Seemed to have potential though, will order differently next time. I like that the lunch special has a good size spring roll cut in two that you can get for $1.25 extra.
  11. Went to the Lee-Harrison location last night and just felt like things weren't entirely on. Tres Enchiladas were lacking the flavor they have had in the past, and seemed to be missing a flavor component while they had a decent amount of heat. Salsa seemed not quite as good, chips not quite as fresh as normal. Perhaps it was an off night, or maybe I was just grumpy. It was ok, just not up to normal. The live guitar music was really nice though. And hubby seemed as happy as normal with his tacos.
  12. I talked with them months ago at a Chamber Event and they said BBQ joint with no mention of fusion. But we didn't go on and on about it.
  13. Yes, I have only been to Zentan once, but unless I heard wildly good things about it I wouldn't go back. It just didn't wow me at all. I thought maybe I ordered wrong, but I haven't heard many raves, just that the sushi is good. The one thing I did really like was the Singapore Slaw.
  14. Yes, those eggs were poached perfectly. It would be between that and Cafe Atlantico's sous vide egg for me, I love the texture of that sous vide egg.
  15. We were there for Mother's Day brunch, as well. I thought service was lovely. The beignets were very good. I had the Louisiana poached eggs and they were wonderful, spicy and rich without overdoing it, crawfish surprising, but not for Blacksalt the crawfish were not overcooked. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it. I liked the complimentary fresh fruit with nice herbs. I just wish the nice little market outside had still been open when we got done. I picked up some lemon lavender sugar cookies for Mom on the way in!
  16. Wow, now I have a lot of suggestions that sound very good. Thanks this is more what I was looking for.
  17. I guess that is what I am struggling with. I just am tired of traditional sides. I wanted this to be a little different than a normal what your grandma makes dinner. But that is what people like with ham... The problem is I am not Grandma, nor am I even Mom, so I didn't want to make that dinner. They do that well (Well, not Grandma, I don't have a Grandma, but I digress). I wanted something un-traditional, but can't think of what would be good. I like the idea of potato salad- I can make a warm german potato salad with carmelized shallots. Perhaps the sweet potatoes with some spice. How do you do the sweet potatoes with the crushed pinneapple?
  18. I know this thread seems silly because so many things go with ham really, but I am doing family dinner before Mother's Day Brunch and I just can't think what great sides go along really well with ham. Not making scalloped potatoes that is too family reunion. I have good rustic bread and would like a some sides for a family style meal. Thoughts?
  19. Won't be able to make it, but could make a Thursday night?
  20. It is kind of a dive, but a nice dive. I always found it one of the best spots for take out on the hill (but I moved to Arlington before restaurant-a-polooza). I heard they were also filming at the Tune Inn and La Carenquena.
  21. Maybe it was a school project to protest something and see how people reacted. The types of frogs that are eaten seem to be fairing ok, they are probably farm raised, so not much different than eating chicken one would think?
  22. Website Here. Fulton Thread Here. After tasting a skim iced chai at Sidamo yesterday I thought to myself... how can I get them to put one of these in Old Town. The chai was the best I have ever had. Spicy and full bodied, made with real chai tea. You didn't even notice the type of milk selection because all you could taste was how good the tea was. I wish I was a coffee drinker because I bet they make great coffee just from smelling them roast and grind it. Ginger molasses cookies... lovely. I also stole a sip of one of the smoothies, we were taking to a friend. Very fresh with real fruit. I love the atmosphere and back patio. They had a nice little menu and by how good the place smelled something on the menu has to be good. I look forward to going back here more often. I just really wish it was closer to my house. * I didn't see a thread for Sidamo, if there is one please merge.
  23. A friend treated us to a dinner of delivered Taylor Gourmet last night. We started out with fried risotto balls filled with mozzarella cheese. I thought it would be aranccini, but no more like a cross between that and a mozzarella stick. They came with marinara sauce and actually were fairly light with nice crunch on the outside and ooze inside. We had the South Street with arugula- grilled. The bread was very good, crunchy outside with nice texture inside and good flavor. All the ingredients were tasty and not over shadowed by other ingredients. I really thought this was a great sandwich. I am looking forward to others, maybe something more messy when I can visit (didn't want soggy delivery). But was very pleased. Also pleased our friends are so close BTW very good value, if you are buy I suggest going for the large and saving the other half for the next day considering it is only $2 more. *BTW I didn't see Taylor Gourmet in the dining guide at either H St. or Mount Vernon... maybe I need my eyes checked.
