  1. Was tired of take out from Thai Terrace last week and had a coupon from 1Gen so decided to use it when a Vegetarian friend was staying over and Hubby didn't feel good and wasn't eating. (The thought of trying to make a Glutten-free Vegetarian meal overwhelmed me) I ordered the Terriyaki Salmon with Broccoli. Which sounds mediocre, but actually it was prepared very nicely. The salmon was nicely grilled and the sauce wasn't overwhelming or real thick. The broccoli was flavorful and not mushy. My friend enjoyed her curry and we got free spring rolls which were nicely made. They describe themselves as "Fine Dining" which I am not sure about, except the white tablecloths, and the menu isn't huge, but what I had was executed well. I think they are adding some sort of grill from the advertisement to be open soon. Website.
  2. You known I have to agree with Mr. Sietsema in that I have been seeing a lot of mediocre food lately. Has anyone else noticed this? With some exceptions (including most notably Trummer's on Main, Pizzeria Orso, Againn and La Carenquena) I have been eating at some places that normally I love and just haven't been feeling it, or I have tried some new places that just didn't whelm me at all. It really upsets me when this happens.
  3. Was down in Wilmington for a few days and we didn't eat out much, but wanted to again say that La Costa Mexican restaurant is really good. They have great salsa that is thick and chunky and really good with nice homemade corn chips. I had the carnitas and the the meat was heaven. Nicely flavored, extremely tender with great sauce with just enough spice to be good, but not too much to ward off anyone afraid of heat. They come with a choice of corn or flour tortillas which is nice and had side of rice, beans, pica de gallo and guac. Order from the specials on the back page of the lunch menu... trust me. If you go for dinner all the dishes are under their type of protein, I think the more authentic and less tex-mex dishes are standouts here. Here is their website: http://www.lacostamexicanrestauranwilmington.com/ Wanted to go back to Catch or to Marc's on Market, but neither are open for lunch.
  4. Frostburg I have, as well, long time ago. They used to get crabs trucked in fresh on Friday and Saturday night and it was a fun place to eat MD crab.
  5. Thank you! And Happy Birthday to Bimbo who shares my birthday!
  6. I wanted to thank everyone that has contributed over the past couple years to this thread. And I appreciate different posts for whom glutten causes stomach issues/ versus the life threatening. I am on a low glutten to glutten free diet for a while even though blood tests came back negative just to see because nothing else seems to be working yet. But the doctor said not to worry about things like soy sauce or etc, just to focus on the biggies to see if it helps. But this has been a really good resource. Any opinions on the current best brands of glutten free breads or baked goods or any good ones at any of the farmer's markets? Or glutten free pasta? I am trying to make this transition a little easier. Although who knows it may be only for a month or two.
  7. This problem has been weighing on my mind a lot lately, as well. But made worse by the fact that I am supposed to be eating a low glutten diet which then leads to eating more vegetables and proteins. And made worse by the fact that sometimes it is so hard to find the origins of the fish you are eating. But I have been reading all the articles above and found them all very useful, if not terrifying. And watching Whale Wars doesn't help, although I don't find the show that entertaining really, I get appauled by the amount of endangered species killed right in front of our eyes on tv. I know it happens with many other endangered species, but it seems to be worse when it is televised and everyone knows about it. I am enjoying this discussion though.
  8. My husband's grandfather passed Friday. It has been a long year for us. I wouldn't say he was a food connoisseur, but he did have a lot of stories that could be turned into complete episodes of Mad Men.
  9. So I looked in the Everything Else Index and could not find a post on Nachos. I have a bad bad craving for nachos. I almost swear that I read a thread recently about good nachos, but it could be my mind creating that because I want them. So I want to know where your favorite nachos are, and why those are your favorite. Important factors to consider would be type of chip and how it holds up, toppings and type of meat and cheese. And I am not looking for chips with yellow goo. --- Spider Kelly's (goodeats) The Big Hunt (qwertyy)
  10. I used to eat at the one in Annapolis all the time. It was a frequent order place for legislative services of the MD general assembly. I highly recommend the cuban style potato or the broccoli and blue. They also have very good iced tea and cookies. They gave us free cookies a lot (we did a lot of business there). I wish I worked close to one again, it was one of my favorite lunch places in Annapolis, especially when we were guaranteed to work late. I just can't figure out how to roast a potato to make it taste as good as they do.
  11. Well as a party of six the chairs couldn't fit underneath the table and all our knees were touching, but there was no other space that they could have put us, even pushing tables together by the wall, not because customers were there, but because of the size of the room. I think there were probably a maximum of 16-25 tables which seems very small to me. I think that the whole space of the dining room is probably about the same size at Palena Cafe only, not including the back room in square footage. But "incredibly" is a very subjective word.
  12. I agree completely with this post. I think dessert was gracious and I nice way to say amends. Taking food that was clearly eaten and enjoyed (it wasn't noted otherwise) off the bill was very very gracious. I would never have posted that, and I think it is a shame that Tom posted it without a caveat that it was a very generous way to make up for it by the restaurant. I feel like they are posting more and more things I think aren't a good judgment call to post, and then not telling diners that hey the restaurant did something very nice so shut it already.
  13. Well I had a wonderful time last night! We arrived at 6:30 which was too late to get a bobblehead and the concession line was packed so we went to our seats. A nice couple in front of us who clearly were more baseball fans than Volt fans gave me a bobblehead and then I got it signed after Bryan and his son threw out the first pitch. Then stood in line with a really sweet couple from Great Brittan to get food. It was a long line, but you could watch the game from pretty much all points, and they were great company. Hubby had some fun seat companions back at his seat including Lydia R. I was really impressed with two of the appetizers. The Dippin dots gazpacho with rock shrimp was my favorite of the night. I love dippin dots, and the flavors in this dish were incredible, dots of cucumber, tomato with microgreens. The rock shrimp were not tough or chewy. Really amazing for a baseball game. I was also happy it appeared to be glutten free as I have to lower my glutten intake, and used up all that on the soft shell sandwich and parts of the desserts. Except for the unremarkable bun the soft shell was also really well prepared (I took most of the bun off) it wasn't breaded very much at all. It had great flavor and the accompaniments were good too. I am not sure what the sauce was but seemed to be like an asian slaw of some sort, I forget what it was called on the menu. I also had the tune nicoise salad which was really good too, it had bites of spicy and savory and sweet. It had snap peas, peppers, hard boiled egg, ahi-tuna, microgreens I think and four different sauces in each corner. One mint, one more spicy and I am not sure what the other two were. I really liked this dish and again it was much more composed than normal ballpark food. I really enjoyed the flavors. I had a bite of the burger which was excellent and really juicy and bite of the lamb sausage which I thought was one of the least remarkable dishes, but much better than a regular hot dog. I didn't think the pulled pork was too different in any way than normal pulled pork, but then again I didn't eat the whole sandwich just a bite of the meat itself. The desserts were great. The key lime pie was amazing. I loved the crust which was graham cracker, but was almost carmelized on the bottom. The custard was phenomenal. It was really the best key lime pie I have ever had (sorry Rays and shops in Key West). Hubby said it was a little fancy, but devoured it in all of two seconds after giving me a bite. I had the cobbler and it was chock full of blueberries and blackberries. It was really great. This makes me hope and pray he opens a more "casual" restaurant that makes unique food like this. Kind of like the Central to Citronelle. I have pictures on my iphone, will post them later, sorry most everything has a bite out of it as I was so hungry I couldn't remember to take pictures. But the people I talked with made the night great. I am from Western Maryland and went to college just north of Frederick so it was fun to talk to people about the good press Volt has brought to the whole city. I have always loved Frederick, so am glad to see it getting more visitors. The game was packed. And unfortunately they lost, but it meant ticketholders can get a ticket to another game free. It was a fun place to watch baseball as there were no bad seats. And the kids running for fly balls were cute as can be.
  14. Must check this place out! I didn't know there was a new food cart in my hood.
  15. Well now I know why no one has been, obviously everyone has already gone once and decided not to return... Last night went to Siroc for a early bday dinner with my in laws. The restaurant is incredibly small and has no real ambiance good or bad. I started with the quail because it sounded good. Even though I had read leleboo's review. The flavors were decent, but there was no discernible olive or artichoke in the dish. And the sauce was definitely too sticky. I would have preferred more of a sauce and less of a sticky coating. I then had the squid ink pasta with clams and sundried tomatoes which unfortunately was awful. There was no sauce that I could find or taste. The pasta was gummy and didn't taste like anything but starch. The sundried tomatoes had not been baked enough to have that real sweet flavor. The clams were fine, but without any sauce or decent pasta to pair with them they weren't good enough on their own to redeem anything. I was really disappointed. I should have sent it back, but my in laws had an awful weekend and I didn't want to make a fuss. I ended with the chocolate hazelnut mousse, which had a really strange taste to it. I am not sure if it was the raspberry coulis or creme anglaise, but something had a strange off-putting flavor. I hope my companions had better food. I didn't get a chance to ask my husband what he thought. Perhaps I would have been better off with meat or fish than pasta. But there was nothing to make me want to come back to this spot in a city with so many options.
  16. Have been back to Punk's a couple times recently as we can have the dog on the shady patio and it is right near the PetSmart where he goes to the doctor (don't ask why we take our dog all the way to Annapolis for the vet, long story). The past two times I have had the skinny chicken sandwich which has terrayaki sauce and a light herb sauce. The bun they serve the sandwiches on is very good and the lettuce, tomato and onion are always fresh. I like the skewer of cherry tomatoes on the side of each sandwich. It is often hard to find ripe tomatoes in restaurants, but here they are. Hubby had a pulled pork sandwich that I had a bite of and really enjoyed. Better than most of the pulled pork in our area as it was tender juicy with great flavor. Had sides of mixed greens which were nice, but getting a little bitter, due to all the heat, I am sure. We also had their red potato salad which I love. It doesn't have too much mayo or mustard to be offensive, but is enough to give it great flavor. I also like that they smash the potatoes a bit. They have Boylan's sodas on fountain which I really like too. I keep thinking what location in Arlington that this place should go in to. I think it would do really well there.
  17. Went to Rocklands in Ballston last night and had the hot and spicy wings. These and the Pit Beef are my favorite things here. I wouldn't say they were all that spicy though, more umami actually. They had a sauce on them that wasn't terriyaki, but was like that flavor mixed with some BBQ flavor. But very good and meaty wings. And a fairly decent portion for the price.
  18. From the Virginia Happy Hour Thread: Hey Folks, So after some discussion in the Trummer's on Main thread I wanted to plan a happy hour there. I can't do it next week, but was wondering if there was interest for the following week perhaps Aug 5th or 6th????? If no one is up for that then I would have to skip a week and go for the third week in August which is totally open for me at this point. The bar menu there looks fantastic and smelled really good. I really want to try some stuff there, and the cocktails were really good when we went. If there is interest I will contact them to set something up. I could drive people to and from the orange line metro, as well. Two open seats in my backseat. (I just went to the Sunday Supper, but someone might consider doing a $38 Sunday there, it would be a great event I just can't plan it anytime soon, too many weddings in my upcoming schedule.)

    Lunch Deals

Zola Wine Kitchen normally has a $10 lunch deal, the options are normally on their website.
  20. So glad after all the stress I am sure that you and your Husband went through that you could find a nice place to relax with good options for both you. It's nice to have a really good restaurant that you both can enjoy and doesn't feel like you are going because you have to eat healthy. That chocolate dessert sounds really good! Might have to go get that.
  21. Haven't been lately. We too loved the place before the new ownership, but it was a lot quieter, apparently the new business style attracts more customers. I agree it is for the Hookahs. The care in the cooking isn't what it used to be. We used to get it for delivery or take out, now we just go a few blocks up to Lebanese Taverna Market instead.
  22. So after having a hellacious day at work that started very early I decided to leave work a little early and stop by Northside Social just to check it out. I had a late lunch so just wanted something refreshing in all the heat. I got an iced chai. Caveat Emptor it comes from a box. Now I am sure it was a really great brand, but after having not from a box, incredible iced chai from Sidamo I just expected more, I was really hoping for more, especially for $4.91. Also the flavor of the chai just wasn't great for iced beverages. I wish I would have known it was a mix I would have gotten an iced latte or coffee something made fresh. OR I could have gotten the brown butter ice cream which sounded great. Why I didn't get that I don't know. It was a bad call. I will be back because I am sure other stuff there will be great, the baked goods looked wonderful, the soft serve sounded good, just won't get an iced chai again.
  23. I didn't think though that the drama in last series was like this though... the editing seemed to be a lot more food focused. Yeah there were some remarks back and forth, but it didn't seem to be so snippy between EVERYONE.
