  1. Just an FYI for those of you that don't get our monthly newsletter. We are having a 10% off sale all items this week ($10 purchase or more, in-store only) from Mon-Sat (we are closed on Thanksgiving day). Keep in mind that our chocolates only have a shelf-life of approximately 2-3 weeks, so this probably won't work for Christmas shopping, but still..... Also, on Fri (11/28) and Sat (11/29) we will be offering free samples of our hot chocolate and few other items all day long. So if you are out and about with the family, please stop in for s'more (get it)free chocolate! We will be open our normal hours all week (10-6, Mon-Fri) and (11-5, Sat.) Thanks and have a happy holidays. -J
  2. I was listening to The Kojo Nnamdi show yesterday and they had Todd Kliman on as a guest talking about the president-elect and his influence on the DC Dining scene. He mentioned the rumor of Art Smith as well. Then someone called in and suggested that Barton Seaver might be a good candidate (with the sustainable fish thing and all..) I Most ridiculous idea I have heard in my life. I think Kliman had the same general consensus.
  3. Good point. I am not saying that the WP (or any other media) should give press to a business unless they deserve it. I think the media should try and seek out new and interesting places to write about. Due to the internet (and boards such as this one) it is much easier to find out about such places. I guess the point I am trying to make is that the whole cupcake thing seems a bit overkill. The food section dedicated a weekly feature, a cover story, a chat, etc, etc.. to the cupcake "craze". I just think there are other businesses out there that are deserving of mentions, writeups, whatever. Also, this post is not meant to be self-serving. We (Artisan Confections) have been very lucky and gracious for our press mentions. I just wish the same for other start-ups and small businesses out there.
  4. Ugh. Again with the cupcakes. I usually like the WP Food section, but this whole cupcake thing has gotten completely out of hand. The weekly cupcake "wars" thing was fine, but do we really need a HUGE cover story about the results? (I understand that it coincides with election day, very clever) I think that there are plenty of other food stories/businesses that could use the press a lot more than the already overwhelmed and busy cupcake joints. Please make it stop.
  5. We had a great dinner on Friday night. This was our second time and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite restaurants at that price point. We enjoyed the pickled vegetables that are served with the bread service. I also enjoyed a nice cask ale (can't remember the name?). We started with some fried olives, which were very tasty, an excellent bar snack . I had the London Broil, which was served a perfect med. rare and came with some smooth mashed potatoes. My wife had the crisp vegetable salad which was very fresh and light. Very attentive service and a nice vibe. We are recommending it wholeheartedly to all our friends. I wish we had a place like this in our hood. Interesting food, well prepared, nice beer and wine list, and fair prices. What more can you ask for? And they apparently show EPL on Sunday during the brunch hours. Bonus.
  6. Thanks to all that braved the foul weather and came by. I would have to say that it was a successful tasting, as we were plenty busy all day long. I hope everyone enjoyed the new flavors and we hope to see you again in the future. I am tired, time for a drink. Best Regards, Jason
  7. BUMP. Just a reminder about our all day tasting on Saturday 10/25. Hope to see you there.
  8. Yep, it's time for our annual fall tasting/open house here at the shop. The event will take place this Saturday, October 25 from 11 AM-5 PM. 9. Local fine chocolate shop seeks holiday help. Starting at the beginning of November and through the end of the year, we will require two part-time production assistants (one day-time and one evening) to help us survive the holiday rush. Join a small and dedicated team of pastry professionals and learn a little something about the art of confectionary science. We need you to have some kitchen experience (we don’t want to teach anybody how to scale chocolate!) but reliability and an ability to learn quickly are more important. We will need you to commit to 20 to 25 hours of work per week. Those hours are negotiable, particularly for the day shift. Compensation is commensurate with experience. Contact Jason at 703.239.0616. You can also PM or email me if you have any questions. Thanks, Jason Andelman Artisan Confections 4815-B Lee Highway Arlington, Va 22207 jason@artisanconfections.com
  10. Are you a member of the "Late Night Shots" crowd?
  11. I don't think the ladies are doing a wine bar. I think it is going to be a more kid-friendly venue.
  12. Just a quick message, we will be having a 10% off sale for the ENTIRE month of August. The discount is good for purchases of $15.00 for any item(s) in our retail shop (it is not valid with other discounts, gift certificates, or for classes). We do have some new items we have been working on as well, so please stop by for a taste. We are open from 10-6 (Mon-Fri) and 11-5 (Sat). Hope to see some of you during these dog days of summer. Regards, -J
  13. I was actually thinking of building a kiosk at the corner of Wilson Blvd. and Hudson St. That way we can accomodate all the customers waiting for a certain restaurant to open.
  14. I am just curious, for all you Arlingtonians out there (and others). What would you like to see available at these kiosks? I guess lets focus on the food first, but if there are other things you would like to have avaialble, what would they be? I for one think this is a great piece of news and I am curious as to who will take the proverbial ball and run with it....
  15. I agree. There are more tactful ways to get your point across. I understand that Nick is passionate about his product and I commend him for that. They try their best not to cut corners at Murky and I do think they brew a fine cup. However, in this instance, that passion has gotten in the way of common sense. A sparring battle over the internet is probably not so good for PR.
  16. I agree, this never should have gone so far (with the dick-punching, name-calling, blog-posting, etc...), however, all he was doing is defending his establishment and employees. This whole thing started with a blog post, so therefore he should have every right to tell his side of the story. I understand it is the service industry, but it doesn't give the customer the right to bad mouth an establishment and have the owner of said establishment sit there and take it. All he is trying to do is sell coffee they way he wants/intends to sell it. I don't think he is trying to be a role model for customer service. Yes, it may be the eventual downfall of his business, then so be it.
  17. I am pretty sure I know who they are talking about. I am not sure if he was homeless, but he used to be there every morning. Sometimes awake and reading, but most of the time he was asleep and snoring pretty loud. I have not seen him in awhile, so maybe he was asked to leave. Also, I frequent Murky every morning before I come to work. I still think they make the best coffee around, although there has always been this issue of customer service. I for one have never had a service issue there, hoewver, I can see how others may find some of the baristas off-putting. If you are used to the warm, bubbly service and speed of a Starbucks, do not expect that at Murky. If you want a great cup of cofee, well... I think Nick has every right to respond in the way he did. It's his store, he should be able to implement any policy he so desires. Ifyou don't like the policy, then go to another coffee shop that is more accomodating, it is just that simple. After many years in the restaurant/service industry, I can certainly agree with him that the customer is not always right.
  18. That place used to be called The House of Biryani and I think it recently changed ownership. We get carryout from there on a semi-regular basis, it's not bad (though not quite as good as Ravi Kabob). The lunch buffet is sounding pretty good right about now... How come you didn't have lunch at Yorktown Bistro?
  19. First of all, I would never describe Cap Hill as being "hip" (no offense to the residents of the Hill). So I think a place like this will do quite well there. Also, he does acknowledge his chef fore-fathers, here is the direct quote from the interview: "I think it is the next big food city," he says of the District, citing Michel Richard and Jose Andres as chefs who have ushered in great change in the past five years. "I would like to be an ambassador of bringing young, hip restaurants here. I'm looking at D.C. as a blank canvas where I hope to practice my art form." Yes, a blank canvas it is not, however, I don't think the dude was trying to disrespect D.C., he is merely trying to market his eatery.
  20. I don't know, that's not the vibe I am getting from this thread. Why does he need to come here and kiss the ass of every other DC chef? All the guy is doing is opening a burger and shake joint. Also, in regards to him recognizing "the others before him" (i.e Richard and Ruta), I mean are these guys really known for their burgers (outside of this board, of course). When I hear the name Michel Richard I don't think, "yeah, that guy makes the best burger...". Also, Central opened less than 2 years ago, which doesn't really make it a DC institution. Comparing what Spike is trying to do at his place to Central or Palena is like comparing apples and bananas .
  21. Wow. I have to say I have never seen so much hatred toward a place that hasn't even opened yet. Cut the guy some slack, let him open his restaurant, and then judge him and his eatery. Also, the comments about him not knowing about Butterfield 9 closing. Should he really have his finger on the pulse of every restaurant closing and opening? I have nothing aganist B9, but it was a restaurant that flew below the radar. I would say that many long time residents of DC has/had never heard of Butterfield 9, why would Spike?
