  1. Jamie, I totally agreed with you. I am glad you pointed out what the writer missed. She said that she is a big fan of Asian food but then she broadly defines what Asian food is. There are many different styles such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and so on. Even in Chinese cuisine, Sichuan style is different from Beijing or Shanghai cuisine. For the same reason, there is French cuisine and Italian cuisine but not European cuisine or Continental cuisine. I realized there are lots of common ingredients between European dishes and Korean dishes through my trips to Paris, Venice and Madrid. I saw that a pig foot dish is listed on the menu of Au Pied de Cochon in Paris, a fried blood sausage (morcilla) on the menu of Manolo in Madrid and a platter of mixed parts of boiled beef (bollito misto) on the menu of Ristorante Greppia in Verona. These dishes are just as easily found at Seoul Soon-Dae and Gamasot. People eat similar food all over the world but I am sometimes stunned by how food critics react differently. I don't understand how some foods eaten in one place are considered gourmet and the same foods eaten somewhere else are considered bizarre. I would like to see a more open-minded point of view from them.
  2. We are going to go to a Jazz concert at the Kennedy Center.
  3. I like Homegoods. It is a bargain store but sometimes the store carries Rosenthal (Thomas line), Danby and Royal Copenhagen. I've purchased lots of quality plates with more than 70% mark down prices. However, you need to be very patient because they don't carry the quality items everyday. I like the Kingstowne location. Also, checkout replacements.com.
  4. Thank you, it was my pleasure. I am glad everyone enjoyed the food. As Eric mentioned, the jellyfish was a bit bland. The chef didn't add enough vinegar and garlic. I tried to order various food which DR members hadn't had before. Following photos are the dishes from the dinner (we missed the Jajang Myun): Fried Dumplings Nu Reung Gi Tang (Deep fried rice with Seafood and veggie) Khan Pung Sae Woo (Fried shrimp with garlic and pepper sauce) Boo Chu Jahp Chae (Beef, Chives, with soy sauce served with steamed buns) Three kinds of cold dishes (shrimp and cucumber with chinese mustard dressing, jelly fish salad, and five-spiced beef) Dae Gi Tang Su Yuk (Korean take on sweet and sour pork)
  5. Please count me in for Hong Kong Palace.
  6. I don't have enough people to enjoy various food this time. I am not going to reveal my idea yet. I will discuss it with Soup when we meet there.
  7. 1. Soup and I will try to find something for your wife. Jajang myun doesn't have any mushroom in it. It would be nice to know how much she can handle the spiciness. 2. The restaurant accepts credit cards but cash helps the payment easy. I would say that $25 per person will work. 3. I personally like sea cucumber though many people doesn't like the texture. I think that I won't be able to have an adventure for the dinner this time.
  8. Soup, Please tell the restaurant that our group name is DR.com when you make a reservation so TheMatt can find our table easily. Thanks
  9. Please make a reservation. It will be much better if we can get a room so we can talk about the food. Thanks

  11. Have you tried Bon Chon chicken? I think you are going to like it.
  12. Bon Chon Chicken's large special plate costs $17.95 and medium is $10.95. Cheogajip's popcorn chicken is $8.99 (good for 2 person) and whole chicken is about $15.00. I haven't been there for a while so I don't know whether there is price changes or not. However, $10 per person at either place would work if you don't go wild for drinks. For Cheogajip, it is basically a take-out place so there are only 3 tables, which can hole maximum 10-12 people I assume. Bon Chon has no problem to have a party for 20-30 people.
  13. The biggest difference is that they don't accept the Super H customer card which gives points and there is no food court.
  14. That's the way how Koreans eat Sullong Tang (Beef soup) and Sahm-Kye Tang (chicken soup). Unfortunately, there is no sign but you will notice as soon as you taste the soup. You season the soup with salt, pepper and chopped scallion and they are on the table all the time when you go to Sullong Tang places like Gamasot or Gom Ba Woo.
  15. I always buy meats from Super H but didn't get poor quality ones so far. I pick the rib meat from the special meat corner (black shelf) between fish section and meat section. The rib meat I am buying has no bone in it and is rolled. Of course, it is a bit expensive than ones in the meat section but it is worth.
  16. FYI: The URL for Honey Pig, which Cha_charoni posted, has been changed. http://kt411.com/adf/index.asp?ID=96 or please see ema's posting above. Just in case if it is changed in the future, the phone number and address are: 7220 Columbia Pike, Annandale , VA, 22003 703-256-5133 / 703-256-5229
  17. I don't mind organizing a dinner for DR friends. It is my great pleasure. When I was there in April, I thought about doing it but they didn't have a big table for 10-15. (Please correct me if I am wrong) All the tables (4 tops) were fixed onto the floor, not movable. 2 minutes later I posted above... I just called Honey Pig to find out their capacity. They said that they can arrange the table for us if we make an appointment. I mentioned the party will be up to 20.
  18. Don't forget adding radish, dates and peeled chestnuts.
  19. From the courthouse, Charlie Palmer is pretty closer than any restaurant in Chinatown. There is an Asian deli called 'Capital cafe' in the same building (next to the parking garage). A sushi joint called 'Momo Yama' is located next to the building which Charlie Palmer belonged. Johnny's Halfshell is not far away, either.
  20. Dan, I will give you the rated list of Korean Restaurants done by Koreans. Korean Restaurants in DC metro area According to this list, Sam Woo is rated 4.8 out of 10. You could have gone to Vit Goel because Short rib BBQ is on their menu.
  21. I found out that Super H adds a new store in Annandale, VA opening in July. The adderess will be at 7885 Heritage Drive Annandale, VA 22003. This will be good news to Korean restaurants in the area. It is good news to me as well because I can save gas and time.
  22. I thought Super H definitely carries it but didn't pay attention lately. I will ask them this weekend.
  23. FYI, all the instant steamed rice products in Korean grocery stores are using sticky rice.
