  1. Circle Bistro is open, and it rocks! Don't miss the steak tartare.
  2. His name was Paul Delisle.
  3. I ate there last year when I had jury duty. The food was good. I remember the fish and chips, especially. I'm embarassed to say that the lunch was comped.
  4. That's a good thing, not a bad thing! Restaurants want you to do that.
  5. Hi Tom, Welcome aboard! My question is this: are there times when you'd rather be home just eating beeny-weeny or mac and cheese than out being force fed foie gras by some ambitious chef? Cheers! Mark
  6. A word about the pizzas. I have generally enjoyed the pizzas here. I learned a valuable lesson there about this type of pizza: too many toppings make it suck. Simple is better. That said, they have a very satisfying pizza for brunch that covers all the bases: mozzarella, basil, tomato, sausage, ham and 2 eggs!
  7. Nicely done, Mike. Heather, there shouldn't be any sacred cows here. Reasoned criticism is good. Drive-by shootings are bad.
  8. I popped into Martin's Tavern last Sunday for a late brunch before attacking Georgetown Mall. The bartender was pleasant and quick. She made a first class Bloody Mary including celery stalk and sasoned salt on the rim. Crab stuffed mushrooms were average. The showstopper: Fried Oysters Benedict. WOW. My 2 favorite things on the same plate, eggs and fried oysters with hollandaise. This dish was out of this world. The oysters were the real thing, not nasty frozen things. English muffin and hash browns completed the dish. It's not crazy to rave about simple food like this. I'm heading back soon.
  9. Giant lobsters on sale this summer at the Palm. Click
  10. Cool, "babka", I worked at the Watergate for 8 years total. I worked for 6 years at Jean-Louis at the Watergate in the 80's. I live 2 blocks from the Watergate, so that is my local Safeway (unfortunately). At J-L, the staff meals were so atrocious most of the time, we ate the salad bar at the Safeway. The sous-chef at the time was Eric Ripert. Chen's is a good place. The food that you order is always tasty. The lunch buffet is, well, a lunch buffet. The Italian place has good calzones and stromboli. I always take these home and cook them myself. An interesting bit of trivia about Jean-Louis, the restaurant was formerly the lunch club of the Democratic National Committee (the guys who almost got bugged starting the Watergate scandal). An interesting feature of the restaurant was that you could whisper on one side of it and the guy across the room could hear every word.
  11. The first thing a restaurant does when this is alleged is to look up the check to see how much liquor is on it. Was it the duck, OR THE 5 MOJITOS YOU DRANK?
  12. Yes, it was the Pan-Asian place for a long time. Then it was something called Cacao - of which not a single word was ever said.
  13. Favorite Simpsons episode: Krusty opens the fridge and says "mmmmm Slimfast or Champagne".... he then takes both out..... 2 6oz. glasses of wine every day for 365 days is a great deal more than 16 liters. The flyover space kills us everytime! No wonder E&J Gallo are/were billionaires.
  14. A splendid time was had by all last night at the Bistrot's 5th anniversary party. Good music and just the right amount of good company made this the best party they've thrown so far, IMO. Congratulations and keep up the good work Michel and Yannis!
  15. I'm planning a "Rosé Riot" this summer featuring: Sancerre Rosé of Pinot Noir, Lucien Crochet 2004 Rosé of Cabernet, Domaine de Chevalier, Graves 2003 Rosé of Grenache, Domaine d'Eole, Cotes de Aix-en-Provence 2004
  16. I prefer to call the work I do a "classic" winelist.
  17. Never, ever, never apologize for what you like. De gustibus non est disputandum means exactly that. There is no accounting for taste. Now excuse me while I go back to my peanut butter, sharp cheddar and Miracle Whip® sandwich.
  18. Yikes, Rocks! This post is ultra subversive. I love the line about "this is why there's alcohol". I couldn't agree more. Food is fuel. Fine dining is entertainment. When the food and the entertainment are good, voilí , you have a good time. When one or both suck, you know what happens. Bad review on the internet. Sometimes you need food and sometimes you need entertainment. Sometimes you need alcohol.
