Mom-and-Pop Restaurants In The Suburbs
Mark Slater replied to RaisaB's topic in Events and Gatherings
Your last sentence is the answer to your question. Or, there is a shortage of crazy people in your neighborhood. The truth these days is, to open a "nice" restaurant anywhere costs $1-4 million. Add to that operating costs for the first year and it is a frightening amount of money to risk, especially if it isn't your own money. -

I had a nice dim-sum lunch last Sunday at China Garden in Arlington. This is a very large and super-busy restaurant. I have never seen so many babies in one restaurant in my life. Not one of them made a peep that I could hear. Dim sum: the secret baby charmer.

There is a famous recording of Verdi's Otello with the very well known tenor Jon Vickers, where he stops singing, turns to the audience and says "Shut up with your damned coughing!!". Priceless.

Sir, To the casual observer, this might be construed as ass-kissing your boss.

I got tapped for a murder jury 2 years ago and was able to have decent lunches at: 701 - at the bar Signatures - at the bar Several places in Chinatown Jaleo The cafeteria only during deliberations - for 4 days! During the trial, it seemed most of the witnesses and trial participants ate at the McDonald's a block north of the courthouse. -

Oldest Restaurants in the Washington, DC Area

The Alpine started in DC on (I think) 19th St. in the late 70's/early 80's. They moved to VA a few years after that. -

Full Kee is best for soups. Also, they only take cash.

Restaurants That Never Come Up

We never look at the menu, only the tanks. The waitress, Kim, is always very helpful suggesting things.

My favorite is New Big Wong on H St. between 6th and 7th. The walls are lined with fish tanks full of interesting things including: live shrimp, mahogany clams, razor clams, dungeness crabs, lobsters, various fish. Their "special fried rice" with shrimp and dried scallops (and no soy sauce) is spectacular and addictive. The menu is on the cheap side, the live things are definitely not.
