  1. It's time to throw my announcement into the I'm moving ring. A dream opportunity has presented itself so in a month I will be moving to a village in southern Switzerland, about an hour north of Milan. Due to the lack of privacy on the internet I am not going to post a lot of information but if I know you IRL I'd be happy to share more details via PM. This board has come a long way from what Don and I imagined it would be the first time we talked about his creating dr.com. I look forward to staying on top of the DC food world from your posts. Ciao, hillvalley
  2. The Brits win because they have fairy cakes and candy floss while we have cupcakes and cotton candy.
  3. Not a great experience tonight. 1) The kitchen staff must be half the size of the waitstaff given how long it takes for a dish to come out. The last time I was there it was packed so the wait for the food was understandable. But tonight the place was half full so the wait was unacceptable. The bartender apologized more than once because it took so long for my tartar to arrive. (No, I didn't time it. Who expects their meal to take so long?) 2) Why the hell is the tartar so spicy? I had to send my first one back because it was too spicy. A good tartar is a balance of flavors. Both versions I had tonight were overshadowed by the heat. At first taste, it is wonderful and the quality of the beef comes through. But seconds later the heat hits, killing everything that was there before. To his credit, the bartender comped the meal, so it wasn't a total lost. And damn, that bread. But there is good bread in my future so I don't need to rush back.
  4. Of course I made it. I wouldn't post a pic of someone else's food without giving credit.
  5. I'd go with the paper towel and baggie. New Morning Farms sells them by the dozen at their Saturday market; I picked up a container and am keeping the blossoms in the container in the fridge. Other uses that haven't been discussed are in quesadillas or omelets. I check for extra protein, rinse lightly and throw them in the pan while either concoction cooks.
  6. Slushies and pickled vegetables. I had a strawberry slushie at Radius a few weeks ago that was horrendous. And those damn pickled veggies are everywhere.
  7. 7th and T is now the best and easiest date night in the city: Show at The Howard and Mockingbird Hill before or after. Here's why I love mockingbird: the menu is very affordable and decadent at the same time. For around $20 not including tax and tip you can sample four of the meats and a flight of sherry. The charcuterie plate is one of the best deals in the city. It's enough for a solo diner to have just enough to feel spoiled or to have a light share. I won't bore you with the details about the meat other than it's really good. Besides, do you really think Derek Brown is going to serve bad pork and duck? My only complaint about the menu is that I'd like to see a vegetable dish or two. The drinks are reasonably priced. I had a very good glass of Fino for $6. Now, I am no wine expert, but this was not $6 table plonc. I think the most expensive sherry was around $15. My favorite though was the G&T made with Green Hat Gin and house made apple & sage tonic. The best part: it's on tap. Yep, there is G&T on tap at the sherry bar and it's really good. And $8 bucks. This lovefest does come with one word of warning: The barstools. They are stools with no backs and are tall for this short woman; I couldn't reach my briefcase sized bag with my feet. There are a plethora of hooks but those don't work for big bags.* In the end I was more comfortable than I expected but next time I'll bring a little purse. *When I'm out I have to be touching my bag in someway at all times. If it doesn't fit on the hook it goes in between my feet. Tall bar stools make this hard.
  8. Go. Get the kitfo. There is a reason Bourdain goes whenever he is in DC. It's at the top of my top three in the area. I've been grazing through it all day and have eaten less than half. Let me know if you want some because there is plenty. I spoke with the owner and he told me he is trying to expand and serve vegetarian kosher Ethiopian food. It will be interesting to see if the restaurant is certified kosher given the requirements. It's hard to believe that there is kosher certified injera in the area. He also said that in July the Washingtonian is going to have an article about him but didn't elaborate on what the story is about. Need to go check the mailbox for my issue.
  9. I tried Hanaro Market yesterday and after an image search on Google to show the fishmonger what I was looking for he informed me they only have it on weekends. I tried the Super H off of 66 and they didn't have it either. Today I was able to buy a tray at Hinata. $15 for 12-15 lobes.
  10. I've wanted to try pasta with sea urchin and realized I could make it myself, with a lot of uni, for a lot less than I would pay in a restaurant. I ended up doing sea urchin three ways: 1) uni sashimi 2) fried quail egg topped with sea urchin and 3) sea urchin sauteed in butter with garlic. I skipped the pasta because it was too hot; it was not missed. Including the package of shiso, the whole thing cost a little over $20. This is a meal that will be repeated a few times in the next seven weeks.
  11. The title says it all. 9:30 breakfast/brunch on a weekday. Kafe Leopold is the backup but I'm hoping for something cheaper.
  12. Between bureaucracy and rent prices this was not in the cards. I'm sorry to hear it is going to take eight weeks to open; a lot happens in two months. This is a family business who deserves support.
  13. I don't get the love. For a few months this winter I ate a lot of Pete's (take out and delivery) and now don't need to for a long, long time. I don't dislike it, per se, but I don't get the love. Granted, the only New Haven style pizza I have had was a rewarmed two day old slice, so I don't have an authentic comparison. But when judging it as a good old pie, I'll pass. That being said, their antipasta salad combo is a go to when we want to splurge on carryout for lunch at work.
  14. To date six: The Bar/Patio Crawl. To drinking on a Sunday afternoon when you know the time together is now limited and celebrating new beginnings.
  15. Please don't fry them. You lose the delicate flavor of the blossom. I know you asked for a nondairy version but my favorite way is to stuff them with a little bit of herbed goat cheese using whatever fresh herbs are around and then to bake them or slowly cook them in tomato sauce. Leave the blossoms whole for the frittata; they are equally good in an omelet. As for cleaning, do so using a gentle stream of water. Depending on where you are getting your blossoms you might find bees as well. If anyone finds themselves with a plethora of blossoms in their garden before August I will be happy to take them off of your hands.
  16. My father requested Le Diplomat after reading about the petit plat and we were happy to oblige. The petit plat pretty much sent Father's Day over the top for my dad and the other dad with us. There was enough for the five of us to share and not feel like we were missing out, with the except of the uni which the dads wouldn't share. I wasn't impressed with the lobster but the oysters, clams, and scallops were excellent. My only complaint is that there were too many muscles which weren't that great. The tartar was as good as described above, although I could do without the extra punch of heat. The standout though, without a doubt, was the foie gras parfait. It needs to be served with a side of Lipitor but is worth every ridiculous, luscious bite. The five of us went through four bread baskets, the last two of baguette only. The service was very impressive; there were at least four people who helped with our table more than once. It was packed for most of our time there but our water glasses were always full, requests filled quickly and the staff actually seemed to be enjoying themselves. This was the first time in a while that I remember a restaurant actually living up to the hype.
  17. You have incorrect beliefs. Definitely go for the pork and rabe, but I would also go there before Pat's for a cheesesteak.
  18. At my friend's first wedding which was held in a swanky hotel, the sign directed guests to the Long Weiner Wedding. At the second wedding they used only their first names.
  19. hillvalley is a combination of the neighborhood where I grew up and my birthday. I have no idea how I came up with it but I started on eG as specialteach and thought it was dull. hillvalley is also a nice play on words for another area of my life that I don't share on the interwebs and I enjoy that irony. I also responded to hillvalley or hill back when some of you used to call me that in person. It has nothing to do with Back to the Future. If you look at the contact list in my phone you will see handles and then the real name. With many of you, in my mind, your name is your handle. It makes introductions interesting sometimes. You'll always be Busboy to me.
  20. Last night: Duck sausages Roasted bone marrow and persillade Peas and mint Braised artichokes Lamb loin chops Dark Chocolate covered raspberry ice cream bars
  21. Tomorrow (Sunday) at noon the temporary Frager's will open across the street from Eastern Market. Lessons learned from the Eastern Market fire are being put to use with Frager's. The garden section was not harmed in the fire so the plants are already in the temporary store. The store was insured so they plan to reopen as soon as possible. In the three days since the fire organizers have raised over $20,000 to help Frager's get back on their feet. As I said elsewhere on the board, The Hill is a special place to live.
  22. Matchbox announced today that they will offer temporary jobs to employees of Frager's Hardware. Many of the matchbox restaurants are a few blocks from Frager's, which burned down last night. Matchbox's actions show why The Hill is a special, unique community.
