  1. We went last night, and I'm now extremely pleased that I also have another reservation for September 19 (the menu will change on September 17). Just fantastic across the board. The papaya salad reminded me very much of my meal last week at Pok Pok in Portland, and was just as good. The fish curry was great. We also loved all three items we ordered off of the dim sum cart (for $2 a piece), the pork bun, the eggplant and the corn with coconut. I can't remember the specifics on all of the courses, but I have the menu at home so I'll post that later. It is definitely different now than what people on this thread had earlier. I strongly recommend this place to everyone.
  2. Excellent work, thanks for putting this together. I know that this site was extremely useful on our trip to Philadelphia a couple of months ago, and the new forum will make it even more so in the future.
  3. There's a vendor at the H Street Farmer's Market who periodically has them. It isn't a reliable source, but I have purchased them there several times over the past couple of years.
  4. El Chucho has their house margarita for, I believe, $5. Not top shelf, but a very drinkable margarita.
  5. It is technically "Rosedale", but I don't think there are any restaurants in Rosedale except for takeout joints. So I wouldn't use that. "Hill East" is a term I usually see used for the more southeast portion of the Hill (where Wisdom, La Lomita and NY Pizza are), and as JoshNE states, there aren't really many places there.
  6. I can't really comment on where they are. A sign went up probably two months ago, and I periodically see them do work on the site. But that's it, no real word recently on what's going on. And I'd probably still call it "H Street Corridor". It's closer to H Street than to anything else.
  7. Well, they're now taking reservations for September and October and I did not get a call, so that answers that question. I'm booked for September 5.
  8. I had such low expectations from Vendetta because every other place by that owner has bad food. The exception to that is Granville's, but looking at Argonaut, H Street Country Club, Capitol Lounge, Pour House, etc, I expect him to put together a nice bar, that happens to produce food. Hence my low expectations. And actually, my last meal at Vendetta was quite nice, I enjoyed it. It's still in my rotation for now. Agree with you 100%, however, in that I want good places to open, not just places in general. My hopes are high for Impala.
  9. Yeah, the space is very strange, no doubt about that. And I was just happy because they topped Sticky Rice, at least most of the time, but that's a very low bar. On Vendetta, I had extremely low expectations going in, and they've actually beaten them as well.
  10. The Queen Vic is probably the biggest disappointment for me. It used to be even with, or in my opinion even ahead of Granville Moore's (mainly because there was a greater variety of options, which made it a more versatile spot). Now I'd rank it down with Argonaut down near the bottom of my list. A real shame. The food at Smith Common is fine, but the cost of a meal there is towards the higher end of anything on H Street. It just doesn't warrant the price. What I like about it is the bar, mainly because it is one of the only places to meet somebody on H where you could have a cocktail, a beer or a glass of wine. That's useful if you're meeting a group.
  11. Interesting. I found the place completely unobjectionable, but then again I've only been twice. What about your experiences was so bad?
  12. Well, I won't claim to represent the DR.com community as a whole, but Union Market has definitely taken hold in my household. I probably visit Union Market about once a week. I love having lunch there on weekends, particularly at Rappahannock Oyster Bar, but I also enjoy having a sandwich and a beer at Red Apron, or the Smoked Salmon BLT from Neopol (which is one of the best sandwiches in the entire city in my opinion). But the reason I'm there as often as I am is to shop for food, not to eat there. I use Harvey's and Red Apron as my primary butchers, I buy my bread from Lyon, we buy our milk and butter (and sometimes eggs) from Trickling Springs, I buy most of my cheese at Righteous Cheese, and I buy some of my coffee at Peregrine. Sometimes these are longer, more leisurely trips on the weekends which include lunch and a glass of wine, but I'll also metro there on a Thursday to pick up something quickly to make for dinner that night (I will also occasionally use Eastern Market for this same purpose). It is still very much an evolving space (they are apparently quite close to finally securing a seafood vendor, which will make a huge difference), there are definitely shops/spots that I never end up purchasing things from, and there are some definite holes that they need to fill to make it a more complete experience. Outside of the seafood vendor, they could definitely stand to have more produce (although they've added a second stand inside and they do have the Farmer's Market outside on Sundays which helps a ton). I would also love it if they had somewhere where I could just buy some basic staples if I realize that I'm out of sugar and don't want to add a stop at the grocery store to my trip. But I believe that it has been improving every month since opening, and I think that all of these holes/flaws are fixable. On the Border Springs issue specifically, I was sorry to see them go. But at the same time, they were in the weird position, and had somewhat of a weird display. They had a very small butcher case, and were selling many items that were also available at Harvey's across the room. They appeared to do a relatively robust business selling prepared sandwiches and such, but this apparently wasn't their goal. I wish them the best elsewhere, and I hope that Union Market fills that spot with another great vendor.
  13. It's come to my attention that this place doesn't have a thread, so I'm starting one. I don't to be honest, have a ton to say about it. The food is better than Sticky Rice most of the time, which I suppose makes it the best sushi restaurant on H Street. Which isn't the highest bar to clear. I've never had any real complaints about a meal here.
  14. I go to Granville Moore's more than any other H Street restaurant, probably at least three times a month. The food is consistently good, at the times that I go I can always get a seat at the bar (that's always weeknights, and typically on the later side, around 9 pm or so), and they have a great selection of beers with very knowledgeable bartenders. It isn't as good, in my opinion, as Atlas Room, Boundary Road or Toki, but I'd put it up against nearly any other restaurant on that strip. Also, related only in my own mind, I feel like the Queen Vic has really slipped within the past six months to a year. It used to fill the same role for us as Granville's, but the food has been not good the past few times we've gone. I now pretty much only go there to watch soccer. Also, it looks like Atlas Room has redone their menu, ditching the "small plate", "appetizer", "entree" gimmick that they've had since opening for a more traditional looking menu.
  15. Chopped is one of my favorite shows to watch, period. I don't have to worry about backstory, I know everything that's going on, and everything is contained within one episode. I watch it all of the time, and can easily binge-watch several of them in a row in the right circumstances. To your question, Rodney Henry from Dangerously Delicious was (briefly) on. There was a woman from DC Central Kitchen on at one point. Guy from Founding Farmers. I don't think Teddy from Granville's was on. He was on Throwdown, and then after that was on Next Food Network Star. But I don't remember Chopped.
  16. Yardbird is quite close. If you're in to cocktails, Regent Cocktail Club in the Gael is fantastic. If you're willing to take a short cab ride I'd strongly recommend Pubbelly.
  17. Hmm, they didn't say that I had to call back. They took my preferred date and time as well as my phone number and said that they would call me. Was that not the case for others?
  18. According to neighborhood listserves, DCPD attempted to serve a warrant to somebody last night around 10:30 pm. Ten hours later the guy surrendered, but some streets were blocked the entire time. Also, many folks got ticketed for parking on the closed block because today is street cleaning. The fact that the city announced that they would waive the tickets is an unfortunate fact only for the shock/amusement value of this story.
  19. Got a call yesterday cancelling our reservation for Friday because of some sort of equipment damage in the kitchen? No more detail than that. Apparently we will get priority for reservations before they open them for the month of September, but still disappointing. Was really looking forward to trying it out.
  20. Agreed, I really enjoyed the article. Very interesting, and I learned things.
  21. Was also disappointed in the results. But very much enjoyed this article on pie style: http://www.grantland.com/blog/hollywood-prospectus/post/_/id/83878/pie-style-an-appreciation
  22. My favorite filling at La Placita remains cecina, but the effort to learn that was more of a reward than the answer.
  23. You would be correct. But their spam musubi is one of my favorite dishes in the city. Ridiculously good. When they had the Hawaiian menu earlier in the year I enjoyed the other dishes as well.
