  1. Interesting piece in the Post today by Fritz Hahn about the new title-holder for most expensive cocktail in the city. And it isn't at barmini. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/going-out-guide/wp/2013/04/03/the-most-expensive-manhattan-in-washington/
  2. They were giving out free donuts, coffee and chicken and biscuits today (stopped I think at 2 pm), and they're doing the same tomorrow. The Grapefruit Campari doughnut is fantastic.
  3. It seems like every Mexican influenced food truck is making its way to, or near to the H Street corridor. Sol on H, Far East Taco a couple of blocks south on 15th, TaKorean and Union Market, Chupacabra just north of H.
  4. Since we're talking about long-awaited H Street restaurants, it seems that Sol Mexican Grill will be the first of the many Mexican or Mexican-ish spots to open (Impala, Chupacabra, Sol, Far East Taco), as according to this they'll be opening this weekend. I've been to the food truck, which was decent, but interested to see how the brick and mortar does. http://districtcuisine.com/2013/03/31/sol-mexican-grill-opening-next-weekend/
  5. And I have no idea how far from opening they are, but Far East Taco on 15th Street just south of H has their sign up. I'll walk by and check out the building some time this week to see how close they look.
  6. I simply assumed that you had talked to somebody else with the differing paprika opinion. I think our opinions on the herring were pretty much the same, if my memory serves me right (note: it probably does not). On the drinks, the list looked roughly the same length as before, so I'm sure they must have taken at least a couple off, but I also could not tell you which ones either. This means that they likely weren't my favorites, and also perhaps indicates that I drank too many of the beverages that were listed on the new list.
  7. Agree on the pickled herring, quite good, and I liked the curry and apple the best. Was my first time having it so I can't comment on any changes in flavor. The oysters were also quite good. They've also made some minor adjustments to their cocktail menu, adding three drinks (that's my best guess, based entirely on memory of the previous menu).
  8. I can only speak for the H Street location, but I did feel about a year or so ago that the quality of their product had declined rather substantially. The past few visits, however, we've been very pleased with their sandwiches. The bread is still not as good as it was when they first opened, but the sandwich as a whole is still fantastic.
  9. Izakaya Seki? Beuchart's Saloon? Boundary Road?
  10. Immediately after reading this thread I happened across news that Adam Howard is leaving Room 11. http://dc.eater.com/archives/2013/03/22/adam-howard-is-out-at-room-11.php
  11. This is a great question, and I don't know the real answer. Typically I'll tip right about 10%, or perhaps a little above, for delivery, regardless of any delivery charge. But I'm not sure if that's correct or not, and I conceivably also need to visit a couple of places and make amends.
  12. FWIW, the Penn Quarter Farmer's Market opens today for the season.
  13. Sounds like I need to add Zenebech to my list, I've never been. I'm a huge fan of Ethiopic, and I agree with the assessment that Etete has gone downhill.
  14. We ate at Table for the first time on Saturday evening. Overall we had a very good experience, although there were some definite service mishaps. The primary one was that when we showed up for our 7:30 reservation there was no table for us. Apparently they've been making the switch from a pen and paper reservations system to an electronic one, and as a result they overbooked the place. We ended up getting seated about 30 minutes late, and I would say that the staff only did an ok job with how this was handled. The food was good to very good, promising, but not great. The highlights were probably the stuffed squid and the clams portion of the pork belly and clams. The pork belly was good, but I agree with discojing on the pork belly, it wasn't my favorite preparation. I'll go back, there was enough promise to be encouraged about this restaurant going forward.
  15. Just a quick comment, the Hogo "pop-up kitchen" concept is ingenious. They've gotten me to go out of my way to drop in simply because I wanted to try a menu for the first time (Rose's Luxury), or because I needed to eat something I really loved before it disappeared forever (span musubi, which led to several trips during the final week).
  16. It isn't an official "club" of sorts, but I know for a fact that if you called up either MacArthur Beverages or Schneiders and said "I would like a case (or whatever) of red wine and I want to spend $XXX" they will put something together for you absolutely. I've done it with both stores and have had good results. The more details you provide, the more likely they are to have even more winners for you. Mention you want predominantly Spanish reds one time, for example, and that you'd like ten of the twelve to be whatever you consider an every day drinking wine and two that are more for special occasions. Or whatever. It has worked for me.
  17. Ugh, I agree, that does make me like the show even less. From what we could actually see, I thought Kristianne was the obvious winner, particularly after Greg was eliminated. I'm glad this show/season are over, because I now won't waste my time with it any more. On to something equally useless!
  18. They're popping up again this Sunday at Toki. http://frozentropics.blogspot.com/2013/03/impala-cantina-y-taqueria-pops-up-at.html
  19. I did see that, the food looks delicious. I'll be sad to see this menu go, but am looking forward to the next chapter. Which has been the case each time with Hogo. One small Hogo quibble, would like to see them change up the drink menu periodically. Not drastically, but some new/different drinks would be welcome, particularly when sitting at tables. When you're at the bar you can interact directly with the bartenders and have them put something together for you, but that's not a good option when you're at a table.
  20. I've only eaten there twice, both times on weeknights, so somebody else might be better able to offer advice. Both times we ate at Izakaya Seki we had no trouble just walking in and snagging seats downstairs at the bar. And having seen the upstairs space I believe that for two people the bar would be preferable. It's cool to be able to watch your food (and other people's food) be put together in front of you, and you may see something in the process that you want to add on to your order.
  21. Ate at Hogo last night to try out the preview of Rose's Luxury, and in my opinion it is the best overall food that Hogo has featured to date. Because we had five people, we just ordered everything on the menu and went at it. Because of a couple of specials, they had taken one or two regular items off, and offered to serve us the Carmelized Cauliflower with Greek Yogurt as well, which we accepted gladly. We also received complimentary dessert, which was vanilla ice cream, vanilla crumble and olive oil. Not sure if everybody gets dessert, or if we were singled out because we ordered a ton and/or live on Capitol Hill. The favorites for our table were the Pork and Lychee Salad, the Crispy Goat with Goat Milk Ricotta, and the Kusshi Oysters with Dark and Stormy Granita, although there wasn't a bad thing on the entire menu. I also really enjoyed the Foie Gras French Toast, which seemed as if it were designed specifically for me, with Cinnamon Toast Crunch ice cream and a bourbon salt. That dish might have been a touch too sweet, but it was still delicious. The closest thing to a miss on the menu was the Popcorn Soup. I think this dish would work better as a lobster dish with a popcorn sauce instead, although I can imagine that would change the price point rather substantially. Anyhow, I'd strongly recommend heading to Hogo in the next five days to check out their food. From our conversations with the folks from Rose's Luxury they plan now on opening in July as the build-out and permitting have delayed their original plans.
  22. This is accurate, although we also call the corner bar the Duck Bar. I typically visit Grants Bar (or back bar) as you can enter directly through the atrium, and it tends to get packed later than the other bars throughout the restaurant. I find the food generally terrible (which is unfortunate as I have to meet somebody there for lunch today), and they are completely incapable of making a cocktail more involved than a gin and tonic. If you stick to drinking beer or whiskey, however, you can make out ok, particularly if you know the bartenders so they serve you promptly.
  23. This is sad news, they were doing great work there. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/going-out-guide/wp/2013/03/08/suna-to-shutter-on-saturday/
