  1. I'll go ahead and lob my question in here. I do have a great deal of interest in Spanish wine, so I'm interested in reading the chat after the fact to learn more on that topic. Of immediate importance to me, however, is that my wife and I are traveling to Spain next Saturday. Specifically we will be spending about five days in and around Madrid and three days in Seville. We've never been to either city. The broader question is, where should we eat? More specifically, we're probably looking to do at least one high end restaurant during our trip, but would do a second if there were two places we just shouldn't miss. After that we are looking for places with good food, and that are representative of the region. Based on recommendations from friends (and from this board) I have a reservation at Botin. Otherwise, I've just been reading things here ard on other sites to figure out where we should be going. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, Mark
  2. We'll be in Madrid in about ten days. I've read over what's on this thread, but any new/different recommendations? For Madrid or Seville.
  3. Fair points. I have not dined in at Fusion Grill in I don't know how long. It was our Chinese delivery staple for a while (since replaced by Panda Cafe), and it does deliver reasonable generic Chinese takeout food.
  4. I pretty much always judge a bar program by their Manhattan for the reasons you state. It is so easy to make it correctly, so if you put out a poor one your fundamentals are so bad I won't trust anything you make.
  5. Don, did you lose a bet that requires you to eat at the worst places on Capitol Hill? Can we expect reviews of Union Pub, Hunan Dynasty and Banana Cafe next?
  6. Agree with you on batch #1, which I purchased last week at Schneider's, it is tasty. We tasted it next to Plymouth, which was the other non-Old Tom gin I had on hand, and it was definitely sweeter, and I think with more citrus. Glad to see them here.
  7. My wife and I went once for dinner a couple of weeks ago, which we ate at the bar. Agree with David that the place looks and feels great, and I am happy that it is there. The food is good, but nothing particularly special. We went to Montmartre the next night, and there is no comparison between the two on food. Did not try the cocktails, but wasn't particularly excited about them after reading the menu and watching the bartender in action. Our hunt for good cocktails on H continues (with the exception, in my opinion, of the Atlas Room).
  8. Apparently you can now purchase the Green Hat Gin either at the distillery or at Schneider's on Capitol Hill. Maybe other stores as well.
  9. I would not eat at Uncle Buck's unless you had no other options. We also found a diner in Stanley (name is escaping me right now) which was decent for breakfast.
  10. Not great news, Anthony's leaving. I suppose the positive here is that at least they're finally re-opening on Friday. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/going-out-gurus/post/anthony-pilla-says-ciao-to-eastern-markets-seventh-hill/2012/08/15/4fe0e936-e6e5-11e1-8741-940e3f6dbf48_blog.html#pagebreak
  11. The speed of the service was the only thing I really had approaching a complaint about the place. The line looked relatively short when we arrived, and it still took forever to even place our order.
  12. Based on my one visit I pretty much agree with the comments above. Good pizza, good price. Really happy it's in the neighborhood, although this isn't a place I'd travel for. Also, agree with Food Nomad on the spiciness of the Maverick compared to the Farmer's Daughter. I think the spicy tomato sauce is the way to go to boost the flavor.
  13. Tabard Inn got the top two places. Timothy Burt's Rangatira Rickey took first place, while Patrick Owens's Rickea took the silver.
  14. My experience is only with the smaller meal, the 8 course one. It was very, very good, no complaints on any of the courses. But it was not very much food. My wife and I actually both left slightly hungry, which was a bit of a surprise for us.
  15. It's my go to if I'm doing lunch on the Senate side of Capitol Hill. I would not give it a super strong endorsement, but it is solid, and worlds better than the other options on that strip (Cafe Berlin, La Loma, Union Pub). That is, however, a low bar to clear.
  16. I was at that show as well, my first time seeing a band in that venue, and I agree. Rebirth killed. Also agree, when I was walking around the tables seemed like a much better viewing location than the standing areas. Sound system is pretty great. The food was so so, although I hadn't eaten yet that day when I arrived, so I was just pleased that they had food period.
  17. Favorite, in my mind, is different than best. My two favorite places in the city and immediate surroundings are Toki and Taqueria La Placita in Hyattsville. I would never claim that they are "better" than Komi, which I believe is the "best" restaurant in the city, but they fill different roles. I love tacos, I grew up eating tacos, and La Placita is cheap, I can go there all of the time. Hence, favorite. I hope this makes sense. It does in my mind, but that's not necessarily a reliable judge.
  18. DanielK, Understood. While I think it is really good, probably my favorite place in the city right now, I don't blame you, I wouldn't simply wait standing on the street for 90 minutes for really anything. They do take reservations, but only for their first seating on Monday through Thursday (I think). So that could be an option for you.
  19. Agree with what's been said above on the parking, you got lucky, but in the future I would not risk it. Your best bets are on the side streets off of H Street. As for the wait times at Toki, the past few times I've popped in they've averaged around 45 minutes to an hour and a half (all on weeknights). The Pug will allow you to bring your drinks upstairs if your seats open up while you're mid-drink (they share a liquor license). Granville's, the Queen Vic and Smith Common are also good options if you want to grab a drink while you're waiting. And finally, I have never been disappointed in ordering a special here.
  20. I'm there for the DNC, but I'll be there for a little more than a week before the start of the convention as well, when things should be a bit less crazy (if past experience is any guide). Once the convention starts I'll be eating at wherever is open and whenever I have time, but I'd like to take advantage of the relative calm before the storm to not eat at Buffalo Wild Wings and Rock Bottom Brewery (which are two of the places I noticed on my quick trip in and out last month). Thanks for the recommendations. I'll definitely check them out.
  21. That's somewhat up in the air, but likely in the Uptown part of town (I think this is right, I've spent a total of 24 hours in Charlotte in my life).
  22. I will say I'm genuinely intrigued by this. A change in or addition to the kitchen did not come up when I dropped in yesterday, but then again I didn't ask. And I appear to be a bit of a dissenting voice on this restaurant, which has consistently been among my favorites in the city for the past decade.
  23. This is great news. Any word on who the vendors will be? Will they be the same as on Saturday/Sunday, or will the market be an actual farmer's market, restricted like some of the other farmer's markets in the area (Penn Quarter, H Street, etc).
  24. Agree 100% on the Kitchen-Aid attachment. Extremely easy to use, and does a great job. I have no experience with non-Kitchen Aid meat grinders, however, so I can't really comment there.
