  1. I'm leaning towards dinner on the 8th because on the 1st I'm budgeting calories to eat a Hurricaine Relief Po'Boy Lunch (go Girl Power!).
  2. Any other Chinatown recs? Heading to NYC in a couple of weeks and want to explore more of Lower Manhattan - maybe, weather permitting, walking across the bridge for Grimaldi pizza and exploring DUMBO. Got amateur night dinner reservations at Tribeca Grill and Bolo (Flay's Spanish restaurant [Closed in Sep, 2007]). Usually have Upper East/West Side centered visits so please help me make smart choices (BF awarded bonus points for August RW dinner at Corduroy). Babbo/Lupia/Otto are booked (any walk-in tactics?). --- Piccolo Angolo (CrescentFresh)
  3. I learned the value of these boards during a visit to Belltown - I had a few weekday solo meals to explore the Pike Place market area - found Matt's at the Market through the CH board. I would have never, never found it. I think they seat less than 20 (half are at the bar). They have no storage space so the staff shops a couple of times a day downstairs in the market... Great bar/counter for gaining intelligence about cooking and wine. I liked the Tom Douglas experience so much I bought the cookbook (not sure if your specifically listed yummies are in it)
  4. [Note: Thanks to DR for allowing this "do-over"] My comments relate to the on-line version of the dining guide and don't apply to the hardcopy version on everyone's doorstep this morning. On Thursday evening, I posted that Colorado Kitchen's hours in the 2005 Dining Guide included weekday breakfast hours. Seems the on-line version has inaccurate, old (oh, about three years) business hours that aren't in the paper version (which notes just lunch/dinner/brunch and no specific operating hours). From Tom's on-line Colorado Kitchen profile: "HOURS: Tue-Fri 7 am-11 am Fri 11 am-2 pm Sat-Sun 11 am-3 pm Tue-Sun 5-10 pm" Next day, I had Friday lunch at CK and did some community-spirited fact-checking (paid Post staff were probably checking more important factoids). Yup, CK stopped serving weekday breakfast around the time of the Fall 2002 sniper incidents (better for Chef to take her children to school than send them by bus) and CK hasn't resumed weekday morning service. Somehow, the Post hasn't updated the old on-line info - even for a restaurant that made it into both the 2004 & 2005 Dining Guides... I'm OK now, Robin served walnut-dense banana miniloaf bread with mango sorbet at Friday lunch and I've a dodged a serious donut bullet.
  5. Thankfully the chat archive isn't in "last in, first up" order. http://www.washingtonian.com/chats/archive...ing/051011.html Agree with anticipation of November issue...
  6. Went for the Soul Rolls tonight (to make up for not getting Acadiana Po'Boys at lunch). Mainly used 'cue sauce instead of fondue for the rolls. The nicest guys (Heather's term) noticed and slipped me a bag of chips to take home with the left over fondue... Need to get back and tip heavy (was too surprised to do much more than say thanks) and, oh yeah, try the ribs.
  7. Arrived at 1:40 and got the fat-free, no carb, "suitable for the gym" tee shirt (maybe it's a sign from above). Got to see the front of house and the back banquet room - very nice AND some tired but smiling staff/volunteers - even better. Now that I know EXACTLY where Acadiana is - no excuses. Thanks for posting their menu.
  8. Making my lunch plans and trying to figure out a good place to eat this carry-out. Best to avoid eating while driving and earning a Thank You Note from my drycleaner. Map shows a park nearby - any suggestions?
  9. Does anyone know if Jackie's has limited, late-summer hours? Yesterday I dropped by around 1:30 for a late Friday lunch and was met by just a "Closed" sign hanging from the door (the place was dark and deserted). Thought maybe I was just too late for lunch service, so I had my second "consolation prize" lunch in the old-school italian place across the street (previously blanked on the closed Monday thing). While there I overheard a 4-top at least a half hour ahead of me muse about missing their Elvis burgers - so maybe it's not just me. I hadn't thought to eat there in a few months and it may be a few more before I try again. Edited to add: I called the restaurant to ask about their weekday lunch service - it's been suspended for the summer and MAY come back again during the winter... Too bad the lunch menu is still live on their website (what a tease).
  10. This afternoon I had a New German Chocolate cupcake at the cafe. Too bad I hadn't caught up on DR.com first. Agree about the over the top richness of the topping/frosting. The cake portion was dense, but I'd attributed it to it's icebox temp. Glad I didn't bring one home. At least I got to drive by some of the Ethiopian restaurants folks have raved about nearby.
  11. All this summer bar banter has me musing about my new fav potent potable: CAIPIRINIA make with Brazilian cachaca, mushed limes, cracked ice and sugar. Any good sources for either a well-made caipirinia or the main raw ingredient (cachaca)?
  12. Looks like Bethesda-Chevy Chase wants in on the RW game. The Washington Business Journal flash today notes that BCC's RW is the week after next July 18-24 and that: "Participating restaurants include: Brasserie Monte Carlo, Café Europa, La Miche, Clyde's of Chevy Chase, New Orleans Bistro, Mon Ami Gabi, Passage to India, Ri Ra Irish Pub & Restaurant, South Beach Restaurant & Bar, Tragara Ristorante, Caddies on Cordell, Bistro Asiatique, Centro, Divino Lounge & Restaurant, Faryab Restaurant, La Panetteria, Taipei Tokyo, Thyme Square, Trattoria Sorrento and Bacchus Bethesda." http://www.bizjournals.com/washington/stor...y30.html?f=et87 Nothing makes me jump - suggestions - am I missing something? Edited to add link to sponsoring group (B-CC Chamber of Commerce): http://www.bccchamber.org/restaurants/restaurantweek.shtml (Lunch = $10, Dinner $18 or $25)
  13. Although this thread isn't fun reading, I'd like to thank DR for giving it space on this board. Orwellian boards would wipe any evidence of this type of exchange swiftly and efficiently.
  14. Just in case you're following the ripple-effect in Maryland: The Baltimore Business Journal had an article last week that sounded both hopeful and "business as usual." http://baltimore.bizjournals.com/baltimore...ry7.html?page=1 The article mentions a "Maryland Wine and Grape Advisory Committee" that "will make direct shipment of wines a hot button topic this year." The members are appointed and not familiar names (to me). Can anyone shed light on who they are? Here's the link to their names and who appointed them: http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/mdma...l/dag.html#wine When in a west coast tasting room, I'd just like to answer the question "where are you from" without being met with a facial expression that says "you poor dear, it must be so difficult living in a cultural backwater."
  15. After several attitude (mine) adjusting Friday lunches, I definely need get there for brunch sometime! Try and snag a bay window table. Here's their website URL: Colorado Kitchen
  16. Thanks, this chronology was a real trip down memory lane. Just in case this list made you hungry too, I'm tossing in a link I've been holding onto for a while. I realize there's more than one Post-Toastie lurking here - please don't spike this link - it's oddly soothing. NOTE: my intent here is to share this virtual stroll - visiting tenured favorites, glimpsing early glimmers of promising things to come, and remembering those gone over to "that big kitchen in the sky." I'd thought about posting the link on C'hound, but didn't want the discussion pulled by the Team who'd anticipate critic critiques - miss Phyllis, but don't want anyone beating on Tom-Tom. 17. Thanks again JohnB for helping set this up and to Crackers for the visual trip down memory lane. I agree with her food comments, but want to also share the joy of crunching on the fresh snap peas in the XO Chicken and tasting really delicate fried rice (at the end, just before dessert). There was alot of food and while the kitchen did a good job of pacing between courses -- it was dizzying. I saw what I hope are Dim Sum serving carts parked in an alcove and will definitely go back for a Dim Sum meal. Can anyone rate HE v Good Fortune Dim Sum? In addition to good food, we had great conversation and I wanted to follow-up on the All-Clad Seconds sale. I just called All-Clad and it's Friday & Saturday (6/3 & 6/4) in the Washington (PA) County Fairgrounds. There are some Pittsburg area shops selling seconds that weekend (Crate), but the biggie will be at the fairgrounds.
