  1. Best I can tell there is one cart in the city currently being described that way. It may be an oxymoron, but it's more novel than trite at this point, I think.
  2. I suppose this was inevitable. The beginning of the end of a good thing? A reality show.
  3. I'm not qualified to speak to the legality of this firing, so this shouldn't be interpreted as a comment about the law but. . . Imagine if the server in question had been black, and PS7 had, as a consequence of this anonymous posting in an online chat, fired all of its black servers. I dare say there would be, at a minimum, protesters outside of PS7. Why is PS7's action toward its female servers, in principle, any different?
  4. Something's trite in this story, but I'm not sure if it's the person involved (Spike Mendelsohn), the food he's rumored to be turning to next (banh mi), or both.
  5. Hmmm. Link is still working for me. I've never seen Bittman do pizza in a cast-iron skillet. I guess the question would be what, if any, effect the sloped sides of a skillet might have as opposed to a flat pizza stone.
  6. So, anybody tried this--pizza in a cast-iron skillet? I've been reasonably happy using a baking stone, but this looks intriguing.
  7. Don't forget the lemon ginger cookies! I think my three-year old is now about 50% Praline lemon ginger cookie.
  8. Wagshal's was even more of a madhouse than usual at lunchtime today in the wake of this week's WaPo story. I would estimate that half the people in line had never been there before (based on the fact that they were unfamiliar with the sandwich ordering process) and were there for the sole purpose of getting the brisket. Unfortunately, they were sold out of brisket, reporting that they had sold "two hundred pounds in the two days" after the story. The next batch won't be ready until the 20th, but they are giving $1 coupons on a future brisket sandwich to anybody who misses out today. I'm happy to see all the business coming to Wagshal's. Uncommonly nice folks serving good food. I had a very good pastrami on rye for my own lunch today washed down with a Boylan's black cherry and accompanied by some Route 11 Sweet Potato Chips. Yum.
  9. One can only imagine how much business this place is going to do before and after a Caps or Wizards game. Frankly, the food could stink (which I sincerely hope it doesn't), and they'll still make a killing. Oh, moral hazard. . .
  10. The popular NYC BBQ joint is coming to a 13,000 sq ft space two blocks from the Verizon Center. Anyone eaten there in NY? More mediocre barbecue in the District, or is this reason for hope?
  11. Nothing like the smell of a publicist in the afternoon. . .
  12. Additions: The Burger Joint in Dupont and Alexandria Closings: Starbucks in Georgetown, Cleveland Park, and downtown [making this Starbucks first net negative year in DC?]
  13. Hanukkah Harry delivered: -Jim Lahey's My Bread -An Emile Henry dutch oven (in which to cook Lahey's ridiculously easy and delicious bread) -Matching chef's hats embroidered with our names for me and my three-year old pancake-mixing monster.
  14. We got a pizza delivered from the MacArthur location. . .once. Had a coupon or something. Frankly, I have no memory of it other than that it wasn't worth remembering. The search for good delivered pizza in DC continues. . .
  15. Yep. More here. Puts his emotions when his mom showed up for the finale in some more context.
  16. Anybody else catch the reunion show last night? Most interesting tidbit: the V. brothers revealed that they are thinking about a joint project. I would guess that the greater DC area would be the most likely destination for such a project (given that they are from here). Most awkward moment: Mattin asking Padma if she became pregnant during the breakfast-in-bed episode. I can't believe they didn't edit that out.
  17. Can't fault them for giving the win to Michael. From Tom's blog, it's apparent that the judges thought Michael's squab was better than Bryan's venison. That really didn't come through in the way the show was edited. Excellent season, but I hope they think about changing up the judges next time around. Gail Simmons has never done much for me (though I suspect she'll be there as long as F&W is a sponsor), and Toby Young is annoying. If only they could get Bourdain back. . .
  18. Don't shoot the messenger. Just what I've heard. Maybe I'll ask for Bouchon instead of Ad Hoc.
  19. That's disappointing. I had heard it was the first of Keller's books that one might actually cook something out of.
  20. With the holidays upon us, I thought I'd bump this thread up. I usually ask for cookbooks for the holidays. What should I be asking for this year? What's new and good? What isn't worth the hype? What are you hoping to receive this year? Already on my list: Jim Lahey's My Bread Thomas Keller's Ad Hoc at Home Monica Bhide's Modern Spice Max McCalman and David Gibbons' Mastering Cheese
