  1. I'm with you. I'm going to be in NY tomorrow on a last minute trip and I have already told my mom we will be having pizza for lunch. And maybe Friday too.
  2. If we combine this with our Hunt's tomato sauce and mktye's pizza dough, we've got a good night.
  3. It would depend on whether or not you were expecting a scene. If so, avoid a restaurant you want to think fondly of and go back to!
  4. I haven't been to Taberna for lunch or for RW but can strongly endorse Tosca as a RW option. They offer the entire menu (with a few upcharges) and have approached RW with an enthusiastic attitutude.
  5. My thoughts exactly. I got a Henckel's knife for my birthday this year from my parents. They couldn't believe that was really what I wanted.
  6. I had a lovely lunch on Friday at Cafe Mozu. It is a very attractive setting and where else in DC can you get a fabulous meal, plush surroundings, with an expansive garden and river view? This place and its lounge could be my new favorite summer drinks place. Three of my companions had the daily special bento box -- six small portions of delicacies ranging from halibut to tempura shrimp to orzo salad to flank steak. The presentation was lovely and portions disappeared very quickly. I had the lobster salad with pancetta, avocado and arugala on tosted brioche. It was two decent-szed rounds piled high with lobster salad. The avocado added moistness and flavor and allowed for scant use of mayo in the salad itself -- a plus in my book. The pancetta was a subtle note and not a major ingredient. This was served with a side of housemade spiced potato chips. They were cooked dark (a plus) but they were greatly underseasoned. The one off note in the lunch. We had a round of iced teas to go with our meals. They brought quite the assortment of sugar packets (regular and in the raw), artificial sweetners (both equal and splenda), and a pitcher of simple syrup.
  7. I can always find them at the Glover Park Whole Foods.
  8. I also had the opportunity to check out Dino's last week. I think this place is much further along then I'd expect for a new restaurant and it makes me exicted about the potential once they get their sea-legs under them. I had dishes already described here. My standouts- the scamorza was a wonderful start to the meal and the warmed, but not-too-hot temperature brought out the best of the cheese, the lasagnette will be calling my name once the temperature drops with the generous portion of chunks of tender meat (not ground beef) rich sauce, and the crumbly just barely sweet pine nut tart was a great end.
  9. Personally, I'd like to see a restaurant list feral boar on a menu!
  10. They keep the patio open long into the fall by using heaters. I used to go here often but haven't in a while and I'm at a loss to explain why. Thanks for the reminder of a good place in the neighborhood.
  11. I just received my July e-notes from Cook's Illustrated. It said that the September/October issue will have a test of canned tomatoes with American brands beating the Italians. Of course, that's old news to us!
  12. I see lots of WH types when I go to Old Ebbitt, Ceiba, and the takeout place on the corner of CT & I.
  13. I come from a seedless family. But I'm with you on the pickles...especially the half-sours that are still crunchy. Sigh.
  14. I don't usually follow the notches because I never seem to be making batch sizes that correspond to the notches. You could measure the water before pouring so you'll know for future reference what the four notch means.
  15. I don't rinse when making sticky rice.
  16. I make jasmine rice in my rice cooker at a little under 2:1 water:rice and it comes out just sticky enough. I sometimes hit the "snooze" button once if it is a little too wet.
  17. I've had good luck with Elite Occasions. I've used them a few times to send baskets to people with a new baby. They put together a nice mix of healthy, junk, and gourmet for the parents to nibble on or offer to guests who came to visit in the hospital. I didn't order off the website but called and described what I was looking for and my price range. That way I could mix and match from the various themed baskets. edited to clarify
  18. No. There is another guy that doesn't put his coolers out for you to sort through like Cibola. He has great sausages and often has noodles too.
  19. That is the same place but there was no market there this weekend. I'll check again next weekend to see if it was a one off thing. I stocked up on berries too and made black raspberry puree for the freezer.
  20. Polyface is at Dupont and Arlington. I'm blanking on the other meat guy's name but he is usually near Blue Highland Dairy and the goat cheese/sorbet guy.
  21. It was a very small market last year and got smaller as the summer went on. I was curious if it was back this year and drive by this morning. No market. Anyone know if it moved location?
