  1. Recently enjoyed tasty treats from the butcher case include: - artichauts en crepinette - beautifully turned artichokes stuffed with pork, veal, olives, chicken livers, etc and wrapped in caul fat. A simple, gentle reheating in the wonderful sauce (full up more olives, onions, carrots, etc) and you have a delicious meal, when paired with a salad or some roasted asparagus, and a hunk of bread to soak up the sauce. - oeufs en cocotte - a little jar filled with a farm-fresh egg paired with bits of bacon, rosemary, and sealed with butter. 7 minutes or so in a bain marie - runny yolk, bursting with flavor and worth every penny of the $1.50 price tag. - a beautiful little barded Randall Lineback roast - amazing flavor and texture, quick to prepare, but a little luxury on the plate. I've got the 'jambonneau' waiting for me in the fridge - can't wait to try it!
  2. I stopped by the new Alexandria location last night for some carry out. They did a really nice job with the build-out. The space is big and open, with soft lighting and rich, red walls. My order was ready very quickly and was as good as I had hoped. The palak paneer had plenty of firm cubes of paneer, good flavor, and plenty of brown rice and raita. The shrimp udon was also very good, with 4 large shrimp and lots of noodles - a simple, but pleasant, dish. Generous portions; plenty to share - which I did. There are a few items on the menu that were new to me, but I haven't been a Teaism in quite a while. The kelp noodles with spicy almond butter and the okonomiyaki (Japanese cabbage pancakes) both caught my eye. There is a bar and cocktails are promised soon. For now, it looks like wine, beer, and sake are available. This will definitely be a regular spot on my rotation - I love their quasi-healthy offerings and relatively gentle pricing. Oh yeah - the salty oat cookies are still delicious!
  3. My track record hasn't been great the past few months, but I'm going to try my best to make it!
  4. Another great evening of food and fun(draising)! If sliders were the trend last year, this year's bites were definitely dominated by tartare, in every conceivable form. The good work continues: Share Our Strength has an online auction going on until April 20. There are lots of great items, many food-related, along with travel, music, and even artwork by "The Dude".
  5. Speaking of which... when can we look forward to a re-opening of Bombay Curry Company in the new location? I could go for some of the wings and some kadahi and curry and.... I hope we don't have to wait too much longer
  6. Just wanted to mention that Derek Brown is a partner in The Passenger, so maybe the voters weren't too far off the mark on that one.
  7. I had a wonderful time at the Demo Dinner (and I think everyone else did too). Chef Trey cooked us up a delicious meal composed of great, fresh ingredients. - Texas white shrimp (poached) with comeback sauce, feta (marinated in-house), and a flat parsley/celery leaf/lemon salad - braised Berkshire pork atop Anson Mills pencil cob grits (or polenta, according to some purists...PF, I'm looking at you ) and wilted escarole - butterscotch pudding topped with fresh (barely) whipped cream The demonstration was entertaining, informative, and sprinkled with lots of helpful tips and pointers that will come in handy at home. The wine pairings were excellent, very interesting and unusual - and of course I forgot to write any of them down. Chef Trey and John Wabeck were great hosts and guides through the evening. The folks going on Saturday are in for a good time. I'm looking forward to trying the Ethnic and Chef's Choice sometime soon. Thanks to the great folks at Society Fair - and to darkstar965 - for arranging such a great evening!
  8. I can't comment on the rest of it (right now) - but I can guarantee that you will have an EXCELLENT experience on Saturday!
  9. We may need to compile a collection of all the Washington Post stories about DR.com members. What a sweet story
  10. This thread may also have some suggestions (not super recent).
  11. I'm planning to be there (slightly iffy, but more than likely I'll make it).
  12. Just a little over a week until the Demo Dinners - I can't wait. Looks like there's still one spot open for Thursday. Should be a lot of fun, so hopefully someone will step up and fill it! My +1 is iffy, so if you need two spaces, let me know and we can figure things out. If your attendance and/or the number in your party has changed, please post here or PM darkstar965 (and me, if you feel like it) so the list can be updated. 13. There is a parking garage with free spots for retail visitors in the Zosos building.
  14. or here April 22 at the Liaison Hotel on Capitol Hill.
  15. Based on lperry's recommendation, my mother and I checked out Cafe Shiraz for dinner last night. I certainty didn't know it was there, despite having been at the Bradlee Shopping Center a couple times recently. It was a trip down memory lane walking in, since it's in the former Atlantis location. (My grandparents frequently took us to Atlantis during childhood visits.) We shared the Super Combo, which included kubideh, steak, and chicken skewers, along with our choice of rice or salad (choice of Greek, Caesar, Mixed). We went with the rice. The portion was huge and we had enough left for another meal or two. As Mr. lperry found, the chicken was very good, tender and flavorful. The steak was also good, though a touch more seasoning wouldn't have hurt. No complaints about the kubideh either, good flavor and nicely cooked. The chickpea salad was tasty and plentiful - with the mint a pronounced flavor, along with the lemon juice. Prices were reasonable and the service was friendly and helpful. I'm looking forward to heading back and trying the lamb kabobs.
  16. A friend and I had a great brunch at B & B a week ago. We couldn't pass up the fried doughnuts to get things started, though we munched on them throughout the meal. While the toffee-bacon version was pretty darn good, I especially enjoyed the glazed lemon poppy doughnut. The citrus was bright, the glaze wasn't overly sweet. Both of us had our eye on the same two dishes, so we wound up sharing: House-Brined Corned Beef Hash Fried Duck Eggs, Potato, Parsley - really good corned beef in generous (not too salty) chunks, topped with two eggs, so just right for sharing. and Wild Mushroom Omelette Sottocenere, Veal Neck Sausage, Polenta Hash - a straightforward, well-prepared omelet. I would have liked a few more mushrooms, but they were plenty to enjoy. The small squares of crispy polenta hash were a nice addition to the plate, and the sausage was very good (may have been slightly different than written here, as we were told it was a new menu item that day). Service was great, coffee flowed, and they were very understanding of our slight delay in arrival due to St. Patrick's Day parade traffic. (I did call to let them know I was on the way, but might not make the exact reservation time). The only (very minor) downside was the proximity of neighboring tables. This wouldn't have been an issue if our neighbor had the decency to go to the restroom and blow her nose... obviously not the fault of the restaurant!
  17. I think that was one of the original intentions of the "On a Whim" thread, which doesn't see a whole lot of action anymore. Maybe it's time to give it a kick in the pants and get people 'whimming' again
  18. Based on personal experience, slim to none. They only take reservations until 6:00 pm (unless you're a group of 6 or more), so if you can be there that early, that's what I'd recommend.
  19. After a hectic and somewhat stressful several days, all I wanted was comfort food in a comfortable spot. Fortunately, The Majestic had open seats at the bar beckoning as we walked by on Sunday evening. Like JuneBacon, we started with the grilled baby octopus, which was a bit overcooked in spots, but tender and tasty in the spots that were cooked just right. The polenta and rapini accompanying the octopus were hearty and satisfying. A side of Red's Onion Rings was the best execution of onion rings I've had in a long while (and maybe ever). Perfect crispy batter; big, tender rings; and interesting sauces for dipping. For our main, we shared the meatloaf, always a favorite, and just what I was looking for that night. It's always nice to have a shared dish brought out already separated onto two plates. Paired with green beans with caramelized onions and bacon, and whipped potatoes - I don't think this dish could get any more comforting. A Frisco Sour provided a refreshing start; the coconut cake (to go) was a great end to the meal. I don't make it in as often as I'd like, but when I do, it never disappoints.
  20. The mojito sorbet hit the spot during a late lunch walk up Wilson Boulevard. Not sure how they got a fat-free, dairy-free product so creamy, but I don't care - it was wonderfully refreshing.
  21. I saw this sign on the front of Earl's as I walked by at lunch:
  22. Ha - that's the only episode I've seen (a portion of). I thought Heather Graham's contribution (mmmmmm, yum, uh-huh, being among the more notable quotes) was worthless, beyond providing a little bit of star power.
  23. Add mine as a third vote for Willow, with Bayou Bakery as a good casual option. I would also imagine (but can't confirm) that Talulla might have some nice offerings from Tiffany MacIsaac ... which brings Buzz/Rustico in Ballston to mind. PS - Don, The Dairy Godmother, while a great option, is in Alexandria
  24. Jimmy Hogge, waterman and owner of Buster's Seafood, a fixture at the Arlington Courthouse and Dupont Circle Farmers' Markets. It was always a treat to pass a little time chatting with him, talking about oyster rakes, how best to prepare rockfish belly, and various other topics. He provided a connection to another time and way of life and I'll miss him very much.
