  1. Had a very nice meal at BdC last night. Wanted to point out that one CAN ask for better wine glasses than the standard ones. Had a bottle of 2002 Domaine Tunnel Cornas. At $48 a good deal (retail=$35). I think this wine has closed up a bit as it was not nearly as good as one I had six months ago. The fact that the wine was served WARM did not help (hello ice bucket), which makes me wonder where its stored there. The ribeye steak was wonderful.
  2. This sounds like a good place to ask a general rose question. Had not been a big rose drinker but recently had a rose epiphany. It was a bottle of 2004 rose from Tavel (don't know the exact name). With eyes closed, the wine almost tasted like a very refreshing and dry red wine. It did not taste like a white at all. I loved this wine. Then this weekend I had a rose from the Rhone. It was more pink (less red) than the Tavel. It tasted essentially like a white wine. This type of rose was not for me. Have I stumbled on two types of roses? If so, what do you recommend that tastes like the former?
  3. I am assuming that no food needs be consumed? Mantis is an idea, the club downstairs is hot on Fri/Sat but you can move between that and the upstairs for a more relaxed atmosphere. Science Club is the new place for the lounge music scene. 5 has its Wednesday rooftop party starting up again (probably way too club). Gazuza. I think the type of request your friend is making is what kills good bars and clubs in this town. I think a good bar and a good dance club are distinctly different items. When the two are mixed we get the lounge scene, which is too much for a bar but way too lame for a dance club. Of course I am still bitter that Red is gone....
  4. Enjoy yourself tonight. We went there for lunch two weeks ago. Based on that, I would avoid the crispy fried calamari entree. The shrimp cakes, spring rolls and garden rolls were excellent. There is a parking lot on the side. Make sure to get a token from the restaurant before leaving.
  5. Ok, I answered my own question: Rhone Dinner The list of wines seems very large producer oriented: http://www.frenchwinesociety.org/pdf/Wine_List.pdf
  6. Welcome to DR.COM. I don't know anything about this society. Can you give some more info/web site?
  7. This is Ethiopian steak tartare!
  8. Why should one tip on the tax? The tax is not part of the product and the server does not do anything to serve the tax.
  9. Perhaps they are listening, since today's wine writing has none of the annoying panel of critics: Here Now this is pretty much the same article I read about 2 years in the Post ago about Rosso di Montalcino.
  10. When did they add the right to dine out to the constitution? I find it interesting that your best meal was when it most resembled meat. Just about as odd as those fake tofu turkeys. I feel sorry for you, I really do. But if the economic impetus for more vegitarian options was there, we would see it in the marketplace.
  11. What a lame answer from the Food chat:
  12. Can one show up in jeans and unshaven?
  13. Try Baccchus Wine Cellars on the 1600 block of Wisconsin Avenue. Basir the owner is Syrian and has some nice Lebanese wines.
  14. Donna invited him for dinner at his mother's hosue, that is amazing. Also the lovely smuggness/arrogance(?) of Donna is so funny: "I AM ROBERTO DONNA OF GALILEO" like thats a royal title or something.
  15. Joe, great memories. I lived 8 years in Austria and the Julius Meinl does indeed have the BEST BREAD IN THE WORLD. The 'salz stengel'............ach du lieber. PS: Meinls are everywhere is Austria.
  16. Ed, Dushawn and (barback) Ishmael at the now closed Club Red. Some of them now work at Dragonfly. Treated regulars very well. Often had to request 'less' vodka in my drinks...
  17. Does anyone know where I can find whole (raw) fois gras? Thanks
  18. Did some cooking this weekend. Friday night was my old standby (ie, date dinner when I was a youngin'): Spagetti Carbonara with enough bacon to kill a horse. Saturday I got up early made braised short ribs with ancho chilli sauce and a chocolate mousse. Dinner was the ribs, polenta with gorgonzola, and the mousse.
  19. FoodBar ain't all that. All you can drink Mimosas sounds like all you can drink orange juice. That place is a brilliant looking building. The bar upstaits, Cobalt, can be fun. My wife likes cheezy Madonna remixes we go there from time to time.
  20. My last comment: I am afraid that in some aspects of this controversy, Nadya has been vilified. Thats really unfortunate since she is really a nice person. And while we all can learn about the issues of others, most of us don't have it analyzed on a website and in the Post!
  21. I won't speak for Don, but IMHO I do not think he is looking for publicity like that...I could be wrong. This site is getting quite large. This site is about food in my opinion. The horror stories are light moments and jokes that Don kindly lets us post. Put 40 pages on disabilities is NOT related to food.
  22. I disagree. This site has gotten NOTHING from this post. Remember, Don is not in it for the sheer number of members. We had an 10+page post on disabled issues and segway fanatics, nothing which relates to the mission of this site which is FOOD.
