  1. Recently featured in Wapo's 10 great tastes under $10 They were out of the featured dish from that article, but the chicken and lamb kabobs we had were top notch. Will definitely be back for this and for the "stews for two" that everyone around us seemed to be eating.
  2. And yeah, brining is a must. Remember how when you were a kid, the turkey was the worst part of the meal because all the sides were awesome and the breast was always dry? Not any more!
  3. Interesting, but this site proposes a counter that it will happen twice more before the long darkness. http://www.chabad.org/holidays/chanukah/article_cdo/aid/2343364/jewish/Chanukah-and-Thanksgiving-A-Brief-History.htm
  4. I agree 100 percent, but are you applying this to the DFH Punkin?
  5. Anyone have a recent report on Barren Ridge? Beautiful setting, and I have enjoyed their wines, but it has been several years.
  6. Also it's interesting to see several mention Pumpking is not as overly sweet as I remember, perhaps I have to try one of this year's batch.
  7. This is certainly true--everyone is trying to cash in on the pumpkin craze. There are more, earlier, each year, and this year there seem to be hundreds. Which brings me to this barely tangentially related essay from "Fall Guy" (note: not Lee Majors) http://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/its-decorative-gourd-season-motherfuckers Regarding Shipyard: I go to Maine nearly every year, sometimes several times. Shipyard is a great memory from my twenties. Perhaps I grew out of it, or their product has slipped overall, or both, but their pumpkin is just brutal. I'm drinking Schlafly right now, and I agree with the poster who said it's lighter this year, although I mean that in terms of body, as I feel the spices are turned up a a notch. DFH Punkin is great this year, but not their absolute best effort. I'm still standing by The Fear as the head of the class. I got the second to last case from Old Line today and haven't been able to find it anywhere else the last couple weeks, so go get it.
  8. Table of 4 for lunch today. I don't know if the waitress overheard us talking about the varying spice level some have encountered here with repeat orders of the same dish, but for the first time ever (and I have been a few dozen times I guess) she asked us how hot we wanted each dish, and each was served as requested. Country curry and Floating Market were hot as ever. My pork tom kha was of middle spice level I think, and I was able to add some little pickled peppers out of the jar without dying. Last was the duck kaprow which has a chili pepper on the menu but is never particularly hot, perhaps due to the amount of delicious crispy fat. All around great as usual, I expect I will be back several dozen more times.
  9. AMA=Ask Me Anything If you read through the whole thing, Piratz was obviously the lowest point of his career. He really doesn't like those people.
  10. Hmm, the wording in the article I suppose can be interpreted either way, but the two Wapo commenters, of course known for their erudition, perceived as I did.
  11. When I was a server, we were told that if it's on the menu, you absolutely HAVE to do it, because to not do so to a regular or whatever opens you up to accusations of discrimination from those you do add the grat to
  12. Wait, it's tasting menu only? Odd to use the same name for a different concept, and arguably should be a different thread.
  13. It's been awhile, but I went there again today. I went for the Chili Relleno and enchilada combo plate, and added a pupusa. The pupusas here are massive, which I didn't know, so I am typing in a food coma. Perfectly crisped on the griddle and the star of the show. Our table tried several varieties and all received oohs and ahhs. The Mexican lunch specials were all very good, and the carne asada was given a rave by the guy who ate it.
  14. For what it's worth, I just read this week's Ask Tom and he reviewed it and liked it. I think he and I just have completely opposite tastes.
  15. The Fear remains my favorite. I wish, I (or that article) could have warned vikingjew about Pumpkinhead. blech. I used to like Shipyard but all of their stuff is hot garbage now.
  16. Hmm, I thought the 197 one was on par if not better than Curry Leaf, but it's been a couple years. Looks like the one on the corner of Cherry and Rt 1 is gone, it was better. I can't recall the name of it though. Looks like Mango Grill, which Walgreens killed, is in that spot. It was good at the old location so that's good news.
  17. Can you expound upon the Laurel lunch options? I don't find Curry Leaf better than the other Indian options, and miss Asahi (which it replaced). Laurel is a restaurant wasteland in my opinion.
  18. The second was cured meat. I quit there
