    I have run out of water thrice in my hiking career. I hike a lot, and much of it in the desert. The first was in Joshua tree. Thankfully I had a friend. I doubt I would have died or anything, but she hiked an extra 2 miles to bring me water. The second time I was in less danger, but had sprained my ankle, and was considering if I should piss into my canteen just in case, when I came around the corner and there was the car, and some friendly campers who gave me a beer (which was a bad decision but I had a gallon of water in my car). The third, same friend from story one brought me a gatorade, which I gulped gleefully, then vomited, walked a couple hundred yards and found the car, and puked again. So the lesson is, bring way more water than you think you will need.

    Man, I am starting to get really angry about "blank and blank" restaurant names. Although this one not so much--if it was truly hipster millennial nonsense that angers me, it would be singular pearl.

    Been a couple of times. Food options are really mediocre and limited, although we didn't try the most expensive resort place. We stayed at Panamint Springs which wasn't bad, small clean rooms, food was okay and it has a bar and is much cheaper than the higher resort options If you are up for it, the hike to the summit of Telescope Mountain is fantastic. It's notable for being the one place you can see the highest and lowest points in the contiguous 48 from the same perch. Corkscrew is a challenging but much easier summit The drive down Titus Canyon is awesome. You don't need 4x4s but we had SUVs. I think it good conditions you could do it in most anything. We did rent Jeeps and go blasting around some of the 4x4 roads. This is not technically challenging off-roading. The Barker Ranch (Manson hideout) was a little spooky still. Still haven't made it to the racetrack, probably never will.

    MD is good at some things, I just think their lunch specials are lame. The melting rock cauldron soups are good.

    And this is the problem with off topic boards! This conversation never goes well; no one really wants to change their mind. So typically I refuse to engage mostly, but asking "Muslims" whatever that means, to apologize or condemn terrorism, is like asking asking a Presbyterian to apologize for the Catholic priest child rapes. Islam is not a monolith, and it's extremely annoying that it is treated as one. But if we are going to make them one, more muslims, by far, die due to islamist terrorism by other muslims than any other cultural group. Should they apologize to themselves?

    I tend to avoid dinner out on NYE for a number of reason, but went to the same party as Choirgirl and had a great time. She covered it all well so only a couple comments from me. 1) Someone owes me for the bet on the "sorbet" which I just found out about. Eggnog sorbet is an illogical concept. I should have wagered more. 2) The ribeyes were pounded out, not sliced thin. Why, I have no idea. They were about 8 feet long and a quarter inch thick. Enormous chicken fried steak cuts, really. Everything was still tasty but they certainly weren't medium rare and the only way they could be would be the backwards slow heat quick sear method which these were not. Any other night I would have sent back in a split second, but this was more a party than a dinner, in a way. 3) Choirgirl is being unusually gentle about the server. He was awful. I'm sympathetic as I waited/bartended on more than my share of NYE's but that's life as a server, you get to the party late or not at all.

    There is science on this one though. I second/third/nth beef liver. I like a bit of livery flavor in pate but simply can't eat straight beef liver.

    I think people in Laurel who are interested in good meals are conditioned to go elsewhere, with a few exceptions. I often lament what Main Street could/should be but I haven't been to Olive and i live <ten minutes away, so shame on me.

    I tried the new-ish sushi and Japanese steakhouse in the old chili's spot on Rt 1 and cherry. Sushi was all fine to very good--better than maintenance sushi but not Sushi Sono. Place was basically empty. Pretty questionable starting the same concept that failed there before them, in a shopping center that is annoying to access. But I hope they survive.

    I don't even remember where we were, but a lady was selling some from her driveway near some attraction. Much better than the commercial ones we got later, which were also very good.

    I edited above--I meant I was confused because we read that the dress code is "no jeans and must have jackets" and we saw several people violating each. Also I look much more like Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey than Don Johnson

    It was worth it. I'm confused on the dress code, we saw several people in denim and without jackets But it's ok I forgot to pack a dress shirt and had to go all Crockett style.

    This wasn't quite true, although there are some differences at least on my visit. I'm nowhere near cool enough to be in this building but they were nice to me anyway. Dinner was great. Not doing a course-by-course but we ordered about 1/3 of the menu and the table favorite was the whole fish curry. Glad we asked our server for recommendations because it wasn't on our list originally. I forget what we cut to make it happen. Lots of spiciness and cool pickled things throughout the various courses. The fried chicken has been covered. It's ridiculous, don't skip that. Spicy wagyu tartare was probably my second favorite thing after the curry, although I was prepared for more heat after warning from the server; don't be too scared to order it. Seats by the kitchen enhanced the experience, although I regret not paying more attention to the work. I wonder if the check average is higher in there; it smells so good so we were hyper-salivating by the time we got to order. Everyone should order the onion cocktail and then tell me what you think it tastes like. Go with people you already know and like and won't be embarrassed to be eating fish eyeballs and soaking up last drops of sauces with the last crumbs of bread or bao in front of.
