  1. Has anyone eaten at Palette recently? I'm trying to arrainge 3 business dinners in DC this month all of them need to be in fun hip spots and Palette came to mind. Not to mention they are are member of the Billfish Foundation which I find to be very admirable.
  2. Completely agree. I've had a Lobster Risotto, and a Osso Bucco at Iota that can stand up there with some of the better restaurants in town.
  3. The wine maker of the Twenty Rows Grappler used to be the wine buyer for Dean & Deluca then went his own way to make wine. Good stuff.
  4. I'd think about going out tonight, but the more likely scenario for the entire weekend is that I hit the grocery store tonight for enough meat, charcoal, beer, wine and other stuff to last through the Boston/Yankees series.....LET'S GO SOX!!!
  5. This is a monster statement! Good to hear I work across the street and will have to try it sooner rather than later.
  6. Last night was a fantastic night to hang out on the roof top bar at The Reef in the Morgan. My bison tenderloin was fantastic, and they have a long list of new Oktoberfest beers on tap including Otter Creek (YUM), Ayinger, and Hofbrau.
  7. Ate here Sunday night (Arlington) Great steak Tacos El Carbon, and a Tacos El Pastor. I always say I'm going to try the mole and then get sucked back into the tacos....
  8. Had a fantastic meal at CPS the other night. First off the Fois Gras App. is my vote for best deal in the city. I've really never seen that much duck liver on a plate before. Very good. This was accompanied with a Sine Qua Non Whispering E which was stunning. I had the Sonoma Duck which was perfectly done with a side of the Chanterelle's. Again very generous portions and wonderfully prepared. If I went to buy in whole foods the amount of Chants they give you it would have cost me 20 bucks. My brother had the Waygu and while he raved he also said it wasn't worth the $$. Nadine Brown is a wonderfull Somm. and Martin as ever a gracious host. I'll be back.....as soon as I put some dollars back in the bank.
  9. I've found recently that the 2004 Oyster Bay Savignon Blanc from NZ at 11 bucks a bottle is really pretty good. I'd give it a solid B for QPR. My normal every day SB is the Goldwater Dog Point but I've been buying more and more of the Oyster Bay lately. You can find it at whole foods but I bet it's even cheaper at some of the big wine stores in the area
  10. Had my first meal at Firefly on Friday night. Awesome food. The Lamb shoulder with the black eyed pea casseolet was out of this world. I will also give two thumbs up for the roasted peaches which I'll have to try to recreate at home due to the abundance of thyme that I have in the garden. I'm going to try a variant on it though and wrap the peaches in the thyme spriggs and then grill them. There is a bit of a gem on the wine list which i just had to have and that's the 02 Kosta Brown Sonoma Coast PN in a split. Spendy for a split but worth every penny. Interesting list as well, very thoughtful and working very well with the food. I'll be back...
  11. Thanks all. A couple thougths 1) lobsters... Trap limits and the HUGE decline of ground fish specifically cod have helped the lobster populations. The shedder season was very late last year too which meant that the price definetly stayed higher longer and gave a lot of fisherman incentive to hit it as long as they could into the season. 2) scallops are easy to fish out and take a long time to recover sometimes not at all. Years ago as with lobsters ME was almost fished out of them and the DMR has been very leary of their sustainability ever since. Now I have to have scallops for dinner tonight....like that's a bad thing.
  12. Hey all this is my first post here. Just thought I'd chime in on one of my favorite shell fish. As the son of a former scallop diver I've eaten a few of these guys over the years. There has been what one could easily call a boom in the scallop population and harvest in the mid atlantic waters over the past few years. Maine still is a bit of a different bird because many of the scallop boats/divers do not partake in the federal or off shore managment programs for Scallops which protect and limit catches on Georges Banks. Most all of the boats/divers take advantage of the in shore harvesting which is managed by the state and runs from Dec 1 to april 15 in Maine. I believe this is not the case in southern waters where draggers have a much larger and more heavily populated area to fish.
